I can see that in Dark Souls but Bloodborne comes down hard on gods and the very concept of "enlightenment". They inciting event for the whole game is an insular religious clique pursing enlightenment regardless of what it costs them or anyone else, right up to engaging in frequent mass killings of their own population. The gods you encounter are either so detached from the normal flow of reality that they can't even notice humans or are actively malevolent. The player character can pursue enlightenment for themselves and join the ranks of the gods but doing so strips you of so much of your humanity that its effectively an elaborate form of suicide.

The Healing Church isn't concerned with enlightenment in the same way the College of Byrgenwerth is. Master Willem was studying the Great Ones at Byrgenwerth to achieve enlightenment, but was unable to fully realize this goal before madness consumed him.

His student, Laurence, extracted a sample of beast blood in the Pthumerian ruins beneath Yharnam, and broke off to build the Healing Church around the miracles that could be created with the beast blood, and believed it could be used to ascend humanity. It turned out to do the opposite (shocker, I know.)

The Choir within the Healing Church remained closer to Byrgenwerth's original approach of experimenting and studying the Great Ones, but they became focused more around the worship and tutelage of Ebrietas. It did lead them closest to ascending, and many of their members were transformed into Kin because of it, but none of them were able to transcend into true Great Ones.

The Great Ones in Bloodborne also aren't universally detached from humanity, either. All the Great Ones you interact with have a direct interest in humanity, even if their logic is alien or unclear, and the ending that leads you to becoming an infant great one implies your character retains an interest in ascending humanity, too. The Great Ones you encounter are also non-hostile until they're incited to strike back, or humans otherwise inflict some grave insult to them and draw their wrath.

AnEdgelord posted:

Edit: Demon's Souls also had a church who were opposed to the power of sorcery and drew upon divine miracles from God to protect themselves from the works of the Old One but then you find a talisman that can cast both with this description:

The sorcery-users were just as full of pretensions that they'd found a "clean" way to use the soul arts in DeS. Sage Freke looks down on Yuria the Witch for her "dark" magic the same way the clerics looked down on all sorceries as impure, but secretly he's also obsessed with retaining the small bit of power he's managed to grasp and is more than happy to let the world be consumed if it means he gets to keep it. The point was they were all dirty hypocrites who were trying to find shortcuts to ascension and ended up causing unspeakable destruction in the end. Yuria is the only one of the soul arts-users to realize that and sincerely regret her practice of it.

Right now I'm mostly dying in the Chalice Dungeons while inching my way closer to Queen Yharnham. I was playing through the endgame and DLC with a friend so I'm waiting until we can continue together. Because this game is surprisingly fun in Co-op.

I also love the Lore and have been devouring all kinds of pointless gibberings about it since I got back into it.

Edit: The only two Souls game that I really got into are Bloodborne and Demon's Souls. They own so much. I like the Dark Souls trilogy, but never got into them to the same degree and never got super far into them. The farthest I got is the King in Dark Souls 2.

Haha, guessing you're experiencing the joy of the cursed chalice dungeon before you get to Yharnam? The unique bosses in the chalice dungeons are all really cool fights, but man does it get draining to run through samey rooms just to reach them. That cursed chalice right before the final fixed chalice is just a miserable slog after a while and it gets easier to just gun for the switch rather than exploring it once you're sure you have enough materials to lay the final chalice. The best thing that the chalice dungeons offer is the hacked chalices people have made in recent years that let you access all the non-DLC weapons ASAP and let you try out a huge variety of weapons for more of the game without having to wait for NG+.

Getting to the King in DS2 is near the end and should mean you have access to the DLCs, which are the best part of DS2, if you ever feel like revisiting them. DS2 is by far the longest of the modern From games, so it's a pretty impressive achievement to get that far in it. Especially since the middle section has a pretty noticeable slump in quality over the other games, thanks to its long and messy development leading to a desperate rush to finish it at the end.

The level of vertical movement you get from the grapple hand is entirely new, but the play style is very much an evolution of the aggressiveness and parry mechanics Bloodborne introduced. If you ever tried out Bloodborne and liked the playstyle of parry timing and constantly attacking, Sekiro is built around both. It's more forgiving to start with though, since a mistimed parry is still a block that will cancel damage unless you activate a certain mode in NG+. The biggest challenge is definitely that the game rewards you with avoiding direct fights against common enemies up until you hit bosses or minibosses that can't be one-shot with a backstab, but it also wants you to practice the counter mechanics so you're ready to fight the harder enemies.

Why isn’t there an epidemic of fainting couches in other arenas with extremely popular extremely watched public figures as there seems to be with these youtube people?

I don’t understand the “you don’t know the DMs” thing like ok yeah it sucks but I guess welcome to being a public figure? These are the costs of doing business in our hellworld and frankly speaking it’s not even remotely a new cost of doing business. Read the plethora of recollections celebrities have had about hate mail through the decades

It’s not that I don’t have sympathy, it’s that I don’t get this being used as an excuse given that this isn’t new

Just to be clear here, there is absolutely a world of difference between a pro baseball player making bad tweets and getting blowback for it, and a youtube video-maker doing so and this is a really dumb comparison to dig into.

Like just as a baseline here I'm trying to google whatever the gently caress you're talking about and if it's there it's buried under hundreds of articles about Noah Syndergaard pitching inconsistencies, potential trades to different teams, how well he did at various games, and miscellaneous sports opinion articles about the Mets as a whole. The sheer volume of noise drowns a lot of negativity, and even when it comes to negative reactions, the standard "boo enemy sports team" negativity clearly overwhelms a few dumb tweets. I'm also going to assume twitter is not his primary method of engaging with fans, especially with baseball fans in general trending far older than "normal twitter user" age. And he definitely falls into the category of people paid well enough that he doesn't have to worry about managing his own PR, or financial solvency if too many of his internet followers turn against him.

They picked up Fallout to loot the setting for its rusty retro-future aesthetic and oorah power armor moments alongside your buddies, the Brotherhood of Steel.

They've done similar smoothing over of TES over the years (like the famous "a daedra did it" retcon of Cyrodiil as a setting into a generic western medieval field) but they've had less TES games to run over with a steamroller since Live Service became the big business model.

But it's obvious that there are marketing execs with their fingers in the pie, so with no sense of irony they slap Vault Boy on everything. Though I have trouble entirely blaming them for the emphasis on power armor considering the original two games used it as their cover art.

I don't have an issue with using power armor for branding but the big shifts in the portrayal of the Brotherhood between 1/2/NV and the way the Bethesda-penned games depict them is a pretty major shift between inbred, xenophobic, tech cultists vs a major military force who seize tech but also offer humanitarian aid, and take in orphans, and have a big, cool mecha and will help fight the baddies. It's all a pretty good micro demonstration of Bethesda's shift in tone with Fallout.

I think the extensive modding community for their games also plays a big role in them not caring to switch engines. People here already discussed how all the content creation tools for modding would need to be rebuilt and that's :effort: and drama Bethesda wouldn't want to bother with, but they've also taken an attitude of "who cares, modders will fix it" to a lot of issues in their games. And well, I'm sure an extensive library of sometimes amazing, free fan content is a huge part of why Skyrim's daily PC players are still so substantial that Bethesda eyes them hungrily and wants to find ways to monetize the future games more.
