Doobie was in the days before we had the conceptual vocabulary of milkshake duck. We didn’t know a lovable bumpkin could be a lifelong failure and racist.

The best goon nightmares start from a place of optimism and a sense that redemption for so many past nightmares is possible if it just goes right this time, then just careen straight to hell because that’s the structure of this place. It’s like some classical torment where Sisyphus suddenly remembers where he is and that he’s doomed to do it forever right as the rock starts to roll back down, but then amnesia sets in again.

I always remember when Kate Beaton registered here and was happy to find friendly dorks to talk about weird history with, then started getting people asking her to date them, then got people posting their fantasy dates with her, then didn’t post any more. I think it was like a week from beginning to end.

don't forget the denouement where this exact story started circling on the forums a couple years later and embarrassed goons started constantly contacting her to apologize on behalf of SA to the point where she felt compelled to make a statement about it telling people to let it go already

sounds like typical internet rumour-mongering, once one bad thing is said by a credible source suddenly every bad thing that's ever been said about him is taken as fact. don't believe anything without a reliable source to back it up

generally not a bad attitude but in this case, the progenitor of all this was linked in the original group of tweets

to the first thing; it sounds like they're sending the military guys into an alternate monster hunter dimension??? because that makes sense????

I thought the thing with Loot Crate (that is, the Loot Crate brand specifically) was that paraphernalia was low quality, leftover trinkets from conventions, or merchandise they couldn't sell otherwise. Like I remember there was a thing a while back where they had an Infinity Glove baking mitt in one pack that they had to recall because it wasn't actually insulated properly.

I assume that not all subscription grab-bags are like that, though.

oh, i hadn't even thought about loot crate
the specific thing i linked to is more like 'give us $50 and we'll give you three random items that could be worth up to $200!!!!'
they're trying to entice people to buy a mystery box item on the random chance that'll have been a better deal then buying the thing directly
at least, i think that's the idea? i know it's been around for awhile, but this was the first time i actually paid any attention, and it just seems weirdly similar to video game loot boxes, just with physical items

Yeah the only somewhat lootbox-y thing that's okay is if it's something that's contained in-game and doesn't effect the gameplay like Super Smash Bros' trophy lottery/shop thing from Melee or Brawl and Xenoblade Chronicles has something like that for figurines of everyone and the soundtrack using Play Coins.

So basically my stance is that gambling in games is fine if the money comes from some kind of in game currency instead of real money.

i was so happy the casino in dq11 was micro transaction free, that could have gone to a bad place real fast
