Nella being back is kind of nice. I'm a bit behind on Lindsay Ellis's stuff, does Nella still appear in her stuff?

I'm watching Rich Evans's perfect stream of Dead Rising 2 (no deaths, all survivors, all side quests) and it's one of the tensest LPs I've ever seen. It's full of :stare: moments.

I've never been a fan of political nicknames, because it often just makes people dig in harder and not be open to dicussion at all in the long run. Political satire is good, so long as it's funny.

I've been watching some Idubbbz, and what is that man's obession with storm drains? He spends more time in the sewers than Pennywise the Clown does.

Jim Sterling is self aware enough that he stands out from a lot of the youtube game critics. His opinons aren't always the best, but he puts on a fun enough show that he's fun to watch even if you don't agree with him - he gets that sweet spot where he can put on arrogance as a joke, and it feels like an actual joke, rather than a shield from criticism. Remember when Spoony used to get criticised and instead of learning, he'd pull the 'it's not me, it's my character' thing, even though he'd blurred the line so much it didn't matter?

(We also need more Boglin watch).

It's interesting that the person who pretty much started the whole 'angry reviewer' thing, James Rolfe, is almost completely cut off from Internet Culture and outrage despite making his living online, and he's been pretty careful about what to show - I don't think he's even mentioned his political leanings in a video?

I think with this DIY internet video business, it's very important to decide how much of yourself you're going to share online, and to put clear boundaries on what is a character, what's real, what's private, and what you want to show.

Anti-Logan Paul videos are a cottage industry in and amongst themselves. H3H3 have done some interesting ones, and Quinton Reviews has some actually quite thoughtful analysis of Paul. Actually, Quinton Reviews is very good in general, and is well worth a look.

I'm in the UK where we don't really have Latino people (aside from tourists, the odd immigrant, students, or actual spanish people), and it was super obivous that Joe Vargas isn't white. The only thing I don't get about Joe is that Superman logo and jacket combo - I get it's like an outfit he wears when he's 'in character' as Angry Joe, but it seems an odd choice, but I honestly prefer it when Joe is out of character and just being himself anyway.

Youtuber boxing could be fun if they played it for laughs and it was for charity. Mostly because I now have the image of Ethan Klein doing a boxing match and that could be pretty funny.

The fact that the KSI/Logan Paul thing was covered on BBC news (not like some article on the website, but an actual TV spot on the main news) is silly.

I don't follow any of the spin-off media, so I was super confused when Maul just turned up. I found Rogue One really dull up to the third act, which is baffling, since it had such an amazing cast. Solo just isn't a good story - it's 'man has space adventures, but I guess he's Han Solo'. Only Donald Glover seemed like he was getting into the groove of things and actually having fun. I normally really like Woody Harrelson, but it seemed like he was coasting a bit in that one.

The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi were really solid films, and if they can land episode 9, they'll have pulled off a decent sequel series, but I don't think Star Wars NEEDS more films aside from the episodes. Having a spin-off makes the main films feel less special when they come out, and would having another triolgy even work? Is there are story to tell that needs a film, and can't be told in comics or cartoons instead?

Dunno if she's ever been mentioned since this is a huge thread that I don't check often, but The Sphere Hunter is getting pretty good now. She's a game reviewer with a big focus on Resident Evil, and has a nice, relaxing but still polished, presentation.

For me, skits need to be to the point, make contextual sense and be well timed. AVGN, Baywatching, RLM, Phelous, Cinema Snob are good examples of this. Linkara gets away with it because he's light hearted, self aware and is half decent at seeding plot threads, but I'll admit I don't watch his stuff very often anymore, and have no idea what is happening. Doug seems to use the review mainly as an excuse to do skits, and this range from 'Malcolm and Tara make it work' to 'ok please cut away now'.

Skits are a double edged sword.

The main exception to this Halloweenie, because Halloweenie was a wonderful show. :colbert:

To be far, The Cinema Snob movie wasn't directed by him. It's the writing that hurts that film.

Brad Jones's golden era was when he had Sarah, Brian and Jillian to work with. A few years ago, Brad seemed like a funny, friendly guy who had bad luck with attracting toxic people, but it seems like he's gone down a rabbit hole, especially drawing closer to the Walkers. As for them, I still say that Doug Walker wasted his talents - rather than honing the skills he had and getting sharper and better, he's been coasting for years.

I just hope James Rolfe is really a good guy like he seems and doesn't have a hidden toxic side. :ohdear:

The lootbox thing could solve a lot of issues if they just labelled things for sale, with a price. Microtransations then still have a load of problems, but the random factor is an easy one to work on.

It should be a storefront, not a casino.

I play a lot of Pokemon Go, and haven't paid for any microtransations, because the game is fair about letting you earn ingames coins at a reasonable pace, and doesn't push the store in your face. Yeah, Pokemon is a cash cow, so they can afford to be lax on the selling, but it's a good balance.

I'm looking forward to this. It feels like Lupa's content has been in a rut since the second flare up of Change the Channel. Hopefully this and some Baywatching will give her channel the shot in the arm. I get that online drama can get out of control, and it must be super draining, so some nice solid content, getting back to what she's good at might be nice.

Jack has grown on me, I don't get why people don't like him - he was good with Rich Evans on Previously Recorded, and he's a good foil to the core Mike/Jay/Rich group on Best of the Worst.

The only good fan fic is the stuff that was written naively. Like, fan fic can be good for learning to write (because the fiction you write when you're a kid is going to have things ripped off from media you like, might as well cut out the middle man), but it's better to do something original. But if you've not watched Jenny Nicholson's video on the literacy masterpiece that is 'Trapped In an Island With Josh Hutcherson', that's a trip.

Mind you, we live in a world where a kid wrote a fan-fic about Harry Styles and her falling in love, but it's not like, the real Harry Styles, but a tattooed bad boy who looks like him but is also him (?). Then she swapped out the name, sold it, and Netflix adapted it into an original film. Making fan-fic of real people is kinda wierd, making a movie about the fan fic version of them is wierder.

In the Walking Dead comics, Rick does soften up and commit to buliding an actual society and stop being angry and violent all the time. A big turning point is when when Carl gets his eye shot out. At the end of All Out War, he puts Negan in jail, rather than killing him, and even offers him some sense of forgiveness and redemption a few years later. The series ends with him convincing a large city to reform its society in order to be more equal and gives a big speech about fairness. Rick loses his way morally a lot, but it's part of his hero's journey arc.

The Walking Dead doesn't have fascist overtones, it's about a man learning to not let himself get hardened and bitter by the apocalypse, and to find the value in coming together, buliding relationships, and making a better world together. It's a pretty optomisitic post-apocalyptic work, to be honest. Now the show.....

yeah. the comics are hosed up and depressing at times but society eventually reforms and regrows. the show however has the opposite problem of GoT so if kinda just hosed around and just sat around doing gore and shock value and shounen manga levels of filler. it also dumbs all the characters down a ton. rick just becomes a prick and fucks poo poo up and it kinda just repeats. than after the show some sex monster gurgles about how deep it is.

I think the problem is that since the comic didn't have an endgame for ages, the show had to spin its wheels. Some of the changes they made were better, some were worse, and I dunno what on Earth they're going to do with this extended universe stuff, but the comic and game had a good ending, so that's something.

It turns out being friends with people and growing food and keeping each other safe is better for society than running around fighting everyone, who knew?

Doug showed a fair bit of talent and potential back in the day, but he's been coasting with the NC for so long. If he had grinded and honed his skills then, he could be much bigger now. He's never been a good critic, but he had some comedy skills that could have been nurtured more, but they've not.

It would definitely be far worse than the AVGN movie (which was pretty drat mediocre, sorry James.)

I got a few laughs and was entertained, so I got what I came for (it was on Amazon Prime which helps). It was leagues above To Boldy Flee for example. I'd like to see what James Rolfe could do making a film without the AVGN.

Here's the complete Nostaliga Critic school of film criticism:

-Something creative or surreal happens in the movie - "they must have been on drugs lol"
- The film has a quiet or reflective moment - "how pretenious lol"
- A dramatic character moment happens - "they must be Oscar baiting lol"
- The film has a moral or subtext - "how unstuble lol"
- Cut to Tamara and Malcolm doing a skit sometimes, their talent being unused
- Cut to Doug running in place on a green screen
- Flash in the pan meme is referenced
- Thirty seconds of actual criticism that is pretty surface level

It's a shame, because Doug had a lot of room to grow as a comedian. Like, I think the dude could have broken out into at least a minor career in showbiz if he'd kept working on the better parts of his comedy, but he's wasted so much time on screaming. Imagine the Doug Walker from, like a decade ago, using his internet fame as a push to spending a few years doing the club circuit, honing his act. Maybe he could have been decent by now.

Dumb gimmick crossovers are fun, but charging $40 for a character skin pack is insane. Especially for a medicore film.

The brillance of Up is Not Jump is how his quick fire humour works so well. That sort of 'throw a lot of jokes at the viewer' can become really annoying and obnoxious, but rather than being 'lol so random XD' it's paced and timed so that it enhances his critical approach in a way that makes it really fun. He walks a thin tightrope really quite impressively.
