I dunno how I feel about purple-haired captain. Like, I didn't dislike her or anything but I also didn't really find any reason to be attached to her. It feels like a weird character to give the most visually-impressive heroic sacrifice in the series. It's like they came up with the lightspeed scene first and then nobody could agree on who should be driving the ship

For the record though, the scenes between Rey and Kylo are some of the best material to come out of Star Wars

Spoiler text edited in for the poster who hadn't seen the movie yet.

Holdo works because you aren't supposed to be attached to her character. She spends the movie being Leia but without the audience familiarity with and trust in Leia, because we would have a harder time distrusting Leia over Poe. Holdo's presence allows Poe to act even more unfiltered than before, which gets him in over his head, and allows us to be with Poe every step of the way until Leia comes in.

Also the day/night cycle, which someone brought up, I just assumed was a factor of "these planets have different rotations."

Contra engaging in debate with alt right figures for a time (something she gave up) did get a lot of ire for giving them a platform. The thing is that she uhh... didn't. She engaged them in their spaces, on their streams, where it was their fans watching, some more reachable than others, in order to reach those people. It always seemed way more like they were giving her a platform than the other way around.

Well, kinda not? I mean, I don't think the purpose of criticism is to "rank" art by varying levels of "quality" if that's what you mean. I think criticism is rad and cool and a great way to talk about films, books, music, visual art, etc and furthermore, that the "purpose" of criticism (so much that there is one) is not to say "this is good" or "this is bad".

IMO we can and should talk about art and its critics more deeply than "this movie is bad". And I reckon you agree! A good example of that is, for example, Ellis' third Hobbit video. Stood up on its own, it is a criticism of the art that isn't a qualitative criticism, and that's awesome :)

Out of curiosity, what are some things that you look for when you determine the "quality" of a film, apart from your own enjoyment?

I get you, and point taken, and I think we just disagree is all :)

Discussion of the cultural context around a work is very important and really interesting but "a discussion of a works merits and faults" is literally the definition of criticism. Boiling it down to "this is good/bad" is a massive oversimplification of what is a major part of criticism.

Ah I get you! This makes sense. I guess where I disagree is that saying the first thing means the same as saying the second thing.

"This is good/bad" is a layman's way of getting to "this is why this succeeds/fails."

Critical video essays are mostly saying the latter with just a bit of the former anyway so it seems like a non issue to me.

I've seen a few people even say they prefer the gameplay of Nier The First One over Automata, I suppose due to the lack of challenge or enemy variety in the latter.

Automata is a strong contender as my personal favorite game but it's in need of some rebalancing. More machine variants, better difficulty adjustments, maybe make the shmup segments less watered down, etc.

Same, my friends and I stopped early-mid season 6 for no discernible reason and we keep meaning to go back to it.

The show did some weird things with its animation after a few seasons, like dropping the usually simple animation style to do bigger scenes with sudden CGI, which is the first that I can recall of non-anime cartoon show doing that (probably not the actual first but I can't think of any earlier examples). The end of season 5 does introduce an animation loop that I got a huge kick out of, where they just slap the poo poo out of someone who says/does some dumb poo poo.

I really dug Firewatch and a lot of that was because of how all the interesting poo poo ended up being boring and mundane. It takes the rug out from under you by dangling a traditional story of intrigue and going "actually it's all mostly realistic stuff, except that one guy was being an exceptional piece of poo poo."

It's a neat twist in its own right. Plus you can name the turtle "Turt Reynolds" and that's just plain neat.

At the time, I didn't really know what the context was with all that, but I remember hearing he eventually accepted it. I still sort of wonder, though, if he did so begrudgingly.

It comes up a lot but Hamill literally never likes any post-ANH writing for Luke when he reads it. I think I recall that he turned around on the characterization when he saw the finished product.

Mechanically, I'm not a fan of how Dark Souls 3 feels a lot like a half-step between Dark Souls and Bloodborne. Your character IS faster and there's some real neat and stylish things you can do, but it's most noticeable in the enemies and bosses, especially once you get to Irithyll. The most annoying thing is how some enemies seem to have unlimited stamina, combined with the way poise mechanics work in 3. Plus I've gotten extremely tired of the constant ramping of boss health in these games. Bloodborne got a pass because it was balanced differently and there were ample opportunities for critical attacks.

Narratively I preferred the distance to DS1 that DS2 had (except the parts in 2 where characters keep talking about kingdoms long past to make you ask yourself if this is Lordran). 3 is very referential to 1 but I was never particularly satisfied with how that articulated. As another person mentioned, you have characters who are obvious references to the previous entries, and the only one that I felt worked better than the original was Hawkwood. To be fair, 2 didn't have a lot of great NPCs, either. There was Lucatiel and I, personally, dug how much of a blatant dipshit Licia was. And Ornifex is just neato. Scholar does a lot more by having NPC summons who are neat characters without having actual plotlines. I've rarely had actual human summons who were as fun as Bashful Ray in Brightstone Cove Tseldora.

I'm curious to see what they do with Sekiro. It does look pretty rad but some bigger enemies just look like damage sponges. It's really hard to tell whenever the press play these games because as a requirement to be part of the enthusiast press you have to be the absolute worse at video games.

Since some of the first actual footage of Sekiro I've been getting major Revengeance vibes from it. At this point my dream of a Properly Financed Revengeance 2 is thoroughly crushed so I hope Sekiro can actually capture a glimmer of that.
