The only thing that makes me nervous about Alpharad is that he associated with WeeGee for so long, aka the guy that blatantly plagiarized that one Blue Yeti Mic review and who seems overall pretty edgy and chud-adjacent.

Alpharad seems to be distancing himself from WeeGee though which is smart move.

Edit: It was the subject of this bobvids video for reference

This is America is easily one of the worst episodes Todd has done just because he has jack all to say about it, I’m honestly still at a loss as to why he even made the video. Todd is at his best when doing his more historically oriented videos rather than current stuff.

I also think his format is getting pretty stale at this point, like everyone else I watch has been pushing the medium of video essays/reviews forward in someway by trying new stuff and different presentation formats (and copying Contrapoints a lot) while Todd’s been using largely the same format for his videos for almost a decade now.

I kind of missed nepotism chat, but it’s the exact reason I can’t stand the first Spider-Man reboot with Andrew Garfield. They just had to make it so Peter’s dad created the spider that bit him. It pisses me of because he’s one of the rare popular comic characters where his parents don’t matter to anything and are no one also they aren’t rich billionaires or anything. Like sure the death of his uncle is a primary motivator for him but Ben is just a dude with no inheritance to leave him.

It’s mostly just that I don’t care who the parents of my favorite characters are and I don’t respect the people who do.

Honestly I just think DOOM Eternal is shaping up to be a very divisive game overall that makes some really bold decisions, not all of them good. I’m not 100% through it yet but the further I get the less I like it.

I’m pretty firmly in the I prefer Doom 2016 camp right now it’s just a much tighter experience. Eternal reminds me of Dark Souls 2 a lot with how it is being received.

I mean if you factor in the effects Lost has had on the way TV shows as a whole tell stories there is an argument to be made that no one has a bigger effect on the way people make media than JJ Abrams, and it loving sucks.

I heard season 2 fixed some of the problems with season 1. Hopefully it'll grow into a good show eventually.

Season 2 is a vast improvement in that it somewhat resembles a Star Trek show. One of the big things they do is backpedal on the awful redesign of the Klingons in season 1 like they’re actually identifiable as Klingons now. They tone is a lot lighter the new captain is great it’s actually a fun show. That said I hope we are done with the terrible secret past of Spock’s secret sister from now on because good lord they over did that poo poo in season 2.

The set up for season 3 is extremely wild though and has a lot of potential.

In the specific case of FF7R it’s an odd concern as the remake is several times harder than the original which is honestly a cake walk by jrpg standards. I feel like even on easy it’s harder than the thing it’s a remake of and why would you deny people their nostalgia by making it too hard for people who loved the original.

LeafyOrb

I mean the scenes depicting Palpatine’s rise to power have proven to be a more or less accurate visualization of the process of a government falling to authoritarianism. So at least the prequels are good in that respect if nothing else.

One of DS1’s strongest elements is that it has a clear intended path that you have the option to subvert if you want to and know how.

DS3 and Bloodborne have a far stricter progression path that has some optional side paths that extend out for a bit but rarely link up with the main path.

As for DS2, I’m honestly not sure what the intended path is to this day. It lets you go wherever you want with little restriction until the endgame at least, as result it’s difficultly curve is kinda all over the place. In this regard I wish it was a little less open than it is.

I’m pretty sure Dunkey just makes jrpg reviews because his nuclear awful takes get him tons of views, he seems to just despise the genre entirely.

This latest one is a tour de force of bad takes though. I’m done watching those from him from now on.

That’s honestly my big problem with Linkara these days, he’s not as bad about it as he used to be but he still has his go to in-jokes that he overuses. Like I don’t watch literally all his content so sometimes it just goes over my head.

Otherwise his content has vastly improved over the past few years.

The very few times I’ve been exposed to RWBY I’ve always come away with this feeling that, yes this show is dumb and poorly... everything really, but the people who made it are very earnest about having made it. Like they are clearly into what their making even if I think it’s dumb garbage, but there is place for dumb garbage in our society.

It feels like it was made by a teenager, but I think that’s why people like it.

Also it’s rare for shows that are dumb fun to have a predominantly female cast so that’s kinda neat.

LeafyOrb

The most endearing part of RWBY to me is that in world full of people dressed like anime fashion disasters there is one dude in the show who wears a pair of jeans and some Chucks.

At least for the first few seasons.

The "earnest love for 90's Star Trek" seems to mean pandering to nostalgia because of old grognards complaining about new Trek "abandoning" the spirit of the old series.

I have no idea how you could think this given that all modern Trek is is pandering to nostalgia whilst not understanding why people liked the original shows to begin with. It is the superficial artifice of the old shows you liked with none of the depth or structure.

In someways I would describe watching part 1 as something of a detriment to the enjoyment of part 3 actually. If you go into part 3 excited about Jotaro and Joseph having a confrontation with Dio then part 3 takes a really long time to deliver on that. Dio spends most of the run time sitting on his rear end and not interacting with the crew which kinda hurts when the part 3 anime is nearly double the length of parts 1 and 2 combined.

This a while back now but for the record the pokemon tcg is completely insane in that it’s this weird mirror universe version of MTG where instead of being banned forever ancestral recall and time twister get reprinted every few sets. There’s also like 8000 different tutors and you’re constantly in danger of milling yourself to death if you’re not careful.

I kind of wish I knew how to play as a kid because the actual mechanics of it are completely crazy, especially those first few sets.

I always thought the weirdest instance of a villain in FF being playable was Seymour just because, while Anima itself was impressive, Seymour isn’t that much more powerful than your party at that point. He doesn’t even have -ga level spells and the boss you have to fight with him isn’t even that memorable.

I suppose they are still pretending he’s not a villain at that point, despite his character design.

It just occurred to me how often Square pulled that trick back then.

I know we’re sort of moving past it now, but I’ve always found RE5 Chris Redfield to be sort of an odd case when it comes to body image and power fantasy. Generally when a character is as large as he is it’s pretty obviously done so to entice straight men into your typical power fantasy but I find it common that he is so unrealistically large that it actually distances straight men which I admit might be my personal experience talking than anything.

Instead where he finds an audience is among gay men who find him attractive, I have seen far more gay porn of Chris Redfield than any other character in video games. He appears far more often than other more queer coded characters of similar build like Ike from Fire Emblem. The only other character that appears with anywhere near his frequency in gay art is Gladiolus from FF15. It’s like there is some line Chris’ design crossed that takes him from super unrealistically hetero to gay bear icon, which might be a result of limited options more than anything.

This all clearly unintentional, but an interesting individual case in my opinion.
