Looking at the OP I just realised a pretty serious omission from the earlier Internet threads. We totally missed Preston Jacobs, the famous (or rather infamous) reviewer of the works of GRR Martin. He's notorious in all of the Game of Thrones threads in TVIV and Book Barn. He's incredibly thorough and highly familiar with Martin's body of work, including his seventies science fiction shorts*. He also has a habit of sliding from a fairly plausible reading of a sub plot into weird UFO style conspiracy nonsense.

I think his latest episode is a good short primer of what you can expect from Preston.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMSUK8tBm9g

Despite his reputation he is a very chill reviewer/theorist. He admits most of his really out there ideas are out there and I've never seen rant or shout, at worst he got exasperated and a bit snippy on his reviews of the GOT tv show. Oh and he describes himself as a feminist and talks about how a patriarchal society is depicted in GOT and about the anti war themes and how feudalism and racism are awful etc.

* He even seems to know more about them then George Martin does. At a convention Preston asked a number of question about them, to which a confused George had to apologise about not being able to recall things he wrote decades ago very well. Its a perfectly understandable answer but amusingly it effectively demolished a good chunk of his fan theories.

I feel like their comment on the craziness of CA fans really is basically applicable to any media group though, whether youtube celebrities or 'real' ones, and it's definitely scary. I dunno if CA fans were especially bad about it or whatever though.

Interesting that she actually appreciated CA releasing this information, I guess they somehow managed to accidentally do something worthwhile in this never-ending downward spiral? Although I dunno how this leaked at all so I dunno if they actually did anything much at all.

Well it came out during CA's second response, whoever wrote it (Michaud one or Michaud two) decided it was a good idea to argue with the statement from the abuse victim. It included screen caps from a chatlog about firing ______ with a specific date and time frame for when __________ was fired and according to some people on the web they didn't even do a good job blanking the name. So basically in a really half arsed attempt to protect the privacy of the victim they made it really easy to find out who the abuser was and may have given up some information that can lead people to figuring out the identities of the victims. Or just enough information for them to engage in wild speculation and attack and harass many others by proxy.

Those endless kidnap scenes were just the absolute worst. It takes a lot to make me dislike an open world game but Far Cry 5 managed it with that railroading bullshit. And then it tops it all off with one of the worst endings Iíve ever seen in a game: You beat the cult leader but before you can finish him off, his remaining followers detonate a nuke and blow up the entire valley. Then he escapes in the chaos and kidnaps you again. Roll credits. Itís a shame because I was really enjoying the gameplay outside of those story sequences.

There seems to be a lot of confusion over what exact political message it was trying to send, but my view is that it shouldnít have been expected to send one at all. Itís a story about a doomsday cult and the small group of people banding together to fight them. The villains were never meant to represent Trump any more than the villains of the previous two games were meant to represent real people or factions in Indonesia or Nepal. The second game was an anomaly in that its plot was specifically tied to Africa and its political situation, but the rest of the series is all about putting the player up against hammy, insane villains who donít represent anything more than insanity itself. Like I said, I think FC5ís story was terrible, but not because of its message or lack thereof.

Iíd like it if Far Cry went back to being pure sci-fi for its next installment. Maybe not as over-the-top as Blood Dragon, but something that would let them play around with lots of cool gadgets and weapons. I just hope that, whatever it is, you get to have a big cat as a pet because that was my favorite part of both 5 and Primal.

Nobody expected them to tackle anything out of the gate, they were free to make the next Far Cry into anything for any reason they pleased. It was a deliberate marketing strategy by the publishers to tease that the game was going to be about Christian fundamentalism and America's militia culture. Either the game was conceived to include those themes in the early stages but concerns over potential backlashes hurting Ubisoft's profit margins made them scale it all back to this, or the final product was the intention all along and the marketers figured it'd be an easy way to drum up some buzz and inflate pre-orders and first day sales.

Ah Resistance, it had some local buzz because the neighbouring town was the second level of the first game. Untill we started playing it and realised it was nothing like the town.

Its UK geography was the poorest I've seen since Robin Hood Prince of Thieves too.

The second game was a complete confused mess of ideas but also really bad at hiding its videogame seams.

Hey, so today an article I wrote up about an online controversy regarding Assassin's Creed Syndicate (remember that? no, well it was the one about Karl Marx being in it) was published in a magazine. One of my favourites actually, so I'm pleased as punch. They host free PDFs of each issue http://afed.org.uk/wp-content/uploa...anise90-web.pdf

One problem is that it centred on a popular meme image, but due to communication issues it wasn't included in the fancy magazine version. It should still make sense, but if not you can read the original version on here https://libcom.org/blog/listen-gamers-02022018

Oh and the magazine has some other great articles about Sci Fi including Ursula K Le Guin criticism on comics, a review of Black Panther that focuses on Kill Monger, and some articles about supporting refugees and combatting growing transphobia in the UK.

Eh, to be honest Syndicate felt like Jacob was supposed to be the protagonist while his sister was added on as a secondary*. Pretty sure the game forces at least a 60/40 split in terms of main quests and much of the last few missions Evie just had to awkwardly walk around in one of those ridiculous dresses. So I don't think they're being completely dishonest there, just being overly technical to get credit.

Edit: which was pretty funny since Evie had the most characterisation and fun missions.

He also edited Dangerous Visions and its follow up Again, Dangerous Visions, which were 60s anthologies using short story submissions that would only publish stories that couldn't get published anywhere else because of their content. There all over the place in subjects, tone and style but its kinda uplifting to see how many stories wouldn't cause a fuss if they were submitted by an established writer today.

Personally I also found myself identifying a lot with his stories involving escaping the confines of your own body, annoyingly I've forgotten their names, one involved an artist who could escape to dream places. Another was connected to Shadow over Innsmouth, the narrators best friend married a woman from there and it turns out she's been hijacking bodies, it was very interesting though it did have some quality misogyny. the one doing the jacking is the soul of the family patriarch and he's desperate to escape the body of his daughter because men naturally have stronger more intelligent brains

Also one story that never seems to get brought up when Lovecraft's racism is being discussed but really should is The Temple. http://www.hplovecraft.com/writings...fiction/te.aspx its the one about the U-boat. Lovecraft was a racist but specifically a massive Anglo-Saxon racist, the captain is essentially a German version of Lovecraft complete with the ranting about inherent racial and cultural superiority. But since he's a German (specifically Prussian) his rants are delivered in a way that's supposed to show his barbarity and unhinged thoughts. But if anything its just toned down from what Lovecraft was writing elsewhere. Its quite a read.

Well maybe if he had said that in the first place I wouldn't have been confused. But then again he was also complaining that the Japanese have more than one way to say yes, and then also complained about all the e-mails about mistakes made in the last one. Honestly I stopped watching twenty minutes in, it wasn't very enjoyable listening to him sniping at his own fan base and the jokes seemed a lot flatter than in his Trek ones.

Also the dub I watched was fine, it wasn't spectacular or anything but the plot was explained ok, the conversation dialogue sounded like conversations and not random lines that just don't work in English, and I don't remember any of the voices being super annoying or obviously mismatched to the characters. Perfectly workable, if the series dub is better than that's great, but I've already seen the highlights, so I'm just going to take your word for it.

If it really is that rare now than that's a shame, but that's market economics I guess.
