Aside from a couple clunky titles that I assume sounded better in Japanese (“The Pleasure King” cracks me up every time I hear it) you can’t even tell it’s translated. It has a very Japanese character but I never feel lost even though I don’t know a whole lot about Japanese culture.

The most humiliated I’ve ever been in a game was when I accepted the old shogi player’s challenge to a game in Yakuza 0, told him I was a beginner so he said “great, then I’ll try to play like a beginner too!” and then watched as he completely blew me out in a matter of minutes

Kiwami’s really great too but it lacks something I just can’t define compared to 0, probably just something about it being a remake of a 13-year-old PS2 game. I still love it a lot but I appreciated it more the longer it’s been since I beat 0. I stayed up way too late to beat it last night and now I’m miserable at work for nothing since I didn’t even make it to the end thanks to Majima jumping out at me with 5 health bars every 3 steps. It’s going to be a rough couple of weeks waiting on Kiwami 2 once I finish it off tonight.

It’d be cool if there was an exhaustive list somewhere of what was changed for the remake. Some of it’s really obvious, like the side story about reuniting the Pocket Circuit kids, or when Everyone’s Idol Goro shows up and makes a bunch of references to 24-Hour Cinderella. But there’s some things I wonder about, like Majima kind of casually mentioning that he used to run a cabaret club in a throwaway line before moving on to describe other jobs he’s worked—was that added in because of the cabaret club mini game in 0, or was that whole game and storyline added to 0 based on a throwaway line from 2005?
