i kinda think norse mythology is overdone in games, moreso than nearly any other mythology unless you count elves and dwarves gimme kratos journeying through hindu mythology and getting owned by kali please preloading it anyways

WoW has a lot of norse stuff goin on too it just gets more play than most mythologies, maybe any? You don't see a lot of christian mythology games really

played for a couple hours... im kinda meh on it so far combat is okay, everything else is insanely typical AAA adventure with highlighted climbing walls, linear levels and enforced slow walking sequences

nessin posted:On the one hand, what did you expect? So far for me its just heavy-heavy-light attack string is the optimal combo for everything. I do like that some enemies you gotta punch until they're stunned but then the kill animation seems to repeat a lot, possibly there is only one animation per enemy type? Story is pretty standard gruff dad stuff, nothing super intriguing so far generally but especially compared to the old games which would usually open with you like throwing the collosus of rhodes head at zeus while surfing poseidon or whatever. First plot fight was a cool cutscene but the fighting was still just mashing the same combo and dodge rolling for me. oh i like the dwarf too, he seems cool. i dunno, i hope i'll warm to it, i didnt like HZD at first and loved it by the end. I stopped playing this after 2 hours and went and played something else though cause id been doing exactly the same thing for 2 hours, which seemed like a bad sign

as for slow walking its not really GoW's problem, i just don't like Enforced Slow Movement sequences and they turn up in like every big budget game, I wouldn't mind a cutscene but it bugs me when games are like "now press/hold a single button in order to progress our great cinematic so you remember you're playing a game"

Ra Ra Rasputin posted:How far off would it be to say this game is like The Last of Us, but with the zombie survival shooter aspects replaced by fighting game combat and god of war's local pantheon and monster murdering? Story wise it's very last of us, game wise I think it's more uncharted with axes so far. Gonna play some more today.

the first plot boss distracted me cause his animations and dialogue is so clearly meant to be floki from vikings but he has a british accent and sounds nothin like him just played another couple hours and they're much better than the first couple, it opens up quite widely still not 100% convinced the combat is gonna get good enough to steal the show but I'm liking the game now which I wasn't last night ...im still not very interested in norse mythology though, just a buncha elves and dwarves even if they're different depictions, that said the dwarves are the best bit so far. I still maintain norse mythology is the most common real life mythology to be portrayed in games, maybe because its the most honkey-based mythology that isnt "real" like christianity the story is still kinda rote AAA murder-dad stuff but I do kinda like kratos being shoehorned into the role of adventure-dad and obviously hating every moment of it, he's so furious about being in a modern AAA game lmao. kinda sucks that they big up Faye as this big cool warrior but shes fridged offscreen before the game even begins, hope she comes back or something but they've already introduced Competent Lady so I kinda doubt theres room enough for two

the_american_dream posted:What’s up with the second boss? As a Hard Nosed GOW Vet the first boss is always impressive. Hopefully there a few more that are fun its pretty slow starting for a GoW game, iirc GoW 3 starts with you scaling olympus and killing like 2 titans and a god before the tutorial is over i hope it manages to match that kinda spectacle eventually

kratos hating being in a AAA soulful dad game and wacky elf adventure is my fav bit of his characterisation his face when you meet the fancy dwarf is excellent you can tell he wants to go back to GoW3 and shove that guy into some gears to keep a door open

Anybody know if you can visit all the realms? I'm hoping this is gonna be a bigass game but now I'm thinking it's just gonna be the one storyline with the one main boss plus henchmen and leave the rest for sequel bait rather than killing the whole Norse pantheon over 100 hours. E also I am gonna be PISSED if kratos doesn't get mjolnir by the end!

the dwarves rule, best part of the game combat is fun as long as you get some OP spells and buffs and stay reasonably high level (it took me ages to figure out your level is based on gearlevel and gems) I went to the first bonus realm you get access to quite early on and got my rear end handed to me but managed to make the axe shaft and one of the spells and it carried me through a lot of poo poo the valkyrie bonus bosses seem pretty cool, though I've only beat one so far. it was a proper bossfight where i needed to learn how to respond to patterns, though i think its kinda bullshit they cant be stunned the first plot boss battle didnt wow me as much as everyone else, but the second time you fight was great e: normal seems a good difficulty so far, i think the laser golems are bullshit but everything else has been reasonably fair

the dwarves are extremely well done, well acted, written and animated. Sindri is my husbando, a fraiser-dwarf neat freak but still brave enough to put his dukes up at Kratos "Well thats just a waste of a perfectly good apple," and "Tell me what? You didn't put that in your mouth did you?" and bluedwarf being like "He eatin' alright?" was very sweet I like the traveller enemies who i guess travelled from Lordran, the ones with the shields on their backs can get hosed though, I haven't figured out a way to efficiently deal with them yet just did the 100 enemy trial in muspelheim and gently caress me that was a goddamn chore, though not as bad as the invulnerable dark elf, did it in one go but it took about 25 minutes of constant fighting with very few health drops, probably made me a lot gud'er though also just got to the second bonus realm and I really dig how each of the realms is like a kinda alternate mode to play the game in. I think the only thing holding back the game is the tight camera which doesnt quite suit the combat but the whole game comes together really well, i've gone from straight up not liking it very much to thinking its a very good game

The only major improvement id want for a sequel other than more weapons and a bit more involved skill specialisation would be loot scaling. Since gear level is your player level it makes going back and doing earlier sidequests pointless in terms of progression. Scaling loot plus some fixed legendaries would be nice. You still get exp which can buy skills but the diff between you and a 2 levels higher mob is so stark that your slight increase in arrow damage or whatnot won't help much.

ThisIsACoolGuy posted:So bit of a question. How is the boss variety in the game? Spoilers for temple of light stuff The troll was pretty mediocre as a opening and I really don't like that fight. Then Baldur (I'm assuming) impressed me and was pretty fun. Then it's been all downhill with a troll recolor and literally just a normal enemy with more hp. It picks up later right? Kinda nervous that they made a big "wow!" first boss then left the rest of it for end game. so far for me the enemy/boss variety hasn't been particularly astounding, and I think I'm fairly close to the end, its been a series of troll with obelisks plus one other enemy in the mountain, another baldur fight (which admittedly was very cool but not 100% different than the first fight) and a slightly clunky duo humanoids bossfight. There are hidden bosses that are a bit more involved but are still just humanoids with tough attack patterns.
