Manual safeties still require you to remember they're there, and people have forgotten to take it off even when it's in the most ergonomic position possible. It's way easier to train someone to keep their finger off the trigger and make sure a gun is unloaded before playing with it than it is to get the muscle memory to always flick it on and off without fail when needed, which is why there's been a general push away from manual safeties in combat and self-defense handguns.

I think the logic is more like the semi autonomous cars one, in that they crash all the time because they encourage the human to not pay attention and trust the car right up until it goes "wait gently caress" and hands over control half a second before it's about to hit a granny.

I’ve trained totally inexperienced people to follow the rules of gun safety to the letter on their first day without a single incident, but training to use a manual safety (especially under stress) is much harder because it requires muscle memory with fine motor control. Overall there’s much more risk from an unsafe user with a Glock than a safe user with a gun that has a manual safety, so the general trend has been to remove manual safeties and just make the trigger require a completely deliberate pull by the user to fire. The dumbasses shooting themselves aren’t doing so because of the gun, but because they don’t give a poo poo about safety (they’re usually dumbass cops) and would shoot themselves with anything. I’ve read about 1960s New York cops loving with their revolvers and shooting them everywhere despite being safer than Glocks.
