For a long time, we were at war with The Jackals. Now, finally, we've driven them off, and we're left with this: a year of relative peace. One quiet year, with which to build our community up and learn again how to work together. Come Winter, the Frost Shepherds will arrive and we might not survive the encounter. This is when it will end. But we don't know about that yet. What we know is that right now, in this moment, there is an opportunity to build something.

This is Breathes the Sea (group 2), a game of The Quiet Year for the following people:

  1. Fathis Munk
  2. chin up everything sucks
  3. AJ_Impy
  4. Comrade Gorbash

This is our turn order. Our setup thread is here.
The Roll20 is here.

Who are we?
We are a small village, clinging to the riseward side of a relatively sheltered ravine. Our land is not an easy one, the winds blowing in from the windward sea are harsh and unforgiving, each night the fog clouds our vision and the vegetation is thick, but after a seemingly never-ending war with the Jackals, this land is now ours. The war has taken its toll on our small community, our metal resources have run dry, most of our farms have been burnt and our fleet is but a shadow of what it was before.

Nevertheless, our spirits are high, lifted by the victory and our intimate conviction that all we need is there, on the vast beaches, across the water-covered plains or atop the more remote outcroppings. Already the older members of the tribe talk about site of interest, things that were discovered before the war broke out, but that we have been unable to explore since. The half-bridge, offering a potential access to the vast untapped outcropping towards the Lost, or the tidal caves, close to our village and in a wind sheltered ravine. The elders talk of the Three Sentinels, large structures that rise on the horizon, built in a time no one can remember, and just a bit further riseward from where we live lies a great green valley, teeming with fauna and flora. Now that the Jackals have been driven off, all of this could be ours, we just need to reach out and seize it.

How do I take my turn?
First, you access the Roll20 tabletop and draw a card from the current season's deck. This will tell you to do something, often answer a question.

Second, you resolve the oracle instructions, changing the map and performing actions as necessary.

Third, you reduce the count of every Project by 1. When a Project reaches 0, it's finished – whoever started it describes how it ends. Projects that end prematurely due to the oracle's instructions are described by whoever drew the card.

Fourth, you take your own action (unless the oracle says that you don't act this turn) – Start a Project, Discover Something New or Hold a Discussion:
  • If you Start a Project, pick an appropriate duration from 1 to 6 Weeks and draw it on the map (or add an image).
  • If you Discover Something New, add it to the map.
  • If you Hold a Discussion, start out with a question or a statement. Everyone else then gets to make one statement representing a sentiment in the community. If you started with a question, you then end with another statement. Add a red dot to the map near the subject of the Discussion.

Fifth, you export the map from RealtimeBoard as an image.

Sixth, make a post in the following format:
Season and Week
Oracle question
Resolution to Oracle question, with image if you used one
Resolution to finished projects, if you started them
Your action, with image if you used one
Updated map
Projects list (mark out Projects that reached 0 this turn with e.g., bold or sirens)
Abundances list
Scarcities list
Contempt list

Game Tips
  1. Make every turn count! We only get 40-50, so they all need to meaningfully move the story forward. Make use of existing characters where you can, and introduce and name new ones when they add something new. Say where the windfall of food comes from. Tell us the stranger's name. Reintegrate, change our circumstances, add new details, push the story forwards.
  2. Resources are there to influence how we play, define what's reasonable for the community to do and guide their actions, rather than as traits to be min-maxed.
  3. Abundances and Scarcities are only for when we have far more or less of something we need. Otherwise, we have just enough (or it's not important).
  4. Intangible Resources (e.g., mercy) can be great themes, but if we focus too much on them the story can become ungrounded.
  5. Keep it short – 2-3 sentences is good for an action or oracle resolution.
  6. Characters are important, but the game is about the community as a whole, not just a few people.
  7. Everything that happens must come from player actions and card draws. There are no free actions. You can add immediate consequences, but not longer-term follow-ups (unless you use another action/card).
  8. If a card tells you to take an action (e.g. Start a Project), you still get your normal action on top of that unless explicitly told that you don't. If a card asks you to draw more cards, do so even if you cross over into the next deck.

Thread Rules
  1. Post within 24 hours when your turn or a Discussion comes up, or let us know you're writing it. If you don't, you'll be skipped to keep things moving.
  2. No OOC chat about the narrative content of the game (utility stuff like questions about the Roll20 tabletop is fine).
  3. Remember to describe your finished projects (unless they get terminated prematurely) – this will usually happen on someone else's turn.
  4. Only draw your card when you've got time to post, just in case you draw, don't have time after all and get skipped.
  5. When you take a Contempt token, name the action that caused it.
  6. During Discussions, just post your statement whenever you can rather than in the turn order.

There is a disquieting legend about this place. What is it?

As some of us talk about the half-bridge and what may lie beyond it, our oldest citizen, Nausicaa, speaks up. She warns us about the bridge, says that it had been left abandoned and incomplete for a reason. She says that towards the Lost lie much greater dangers than just darkness and wind, according to her something on those outcroppings is what ended the time before. No one else remembers such a story and when pressed about it, Nausicaa clams up and repeatedly wards herself against evil. Does she know something the others have forgotten?

Action - Start a project
If we are to thrive, we need to explore and exploit our surroundings, and the best way to move people and materials around is ships. While we are short on ore at the moment, we should be able to patch up at least some of the wrecks using wood gathered from near the village.

Are there distinct family units in the community? If so, what family structures are common?

The elders tell tales of a time when people strove for their own good over the good of the community. Such selfishness is part of what led to the end of the time before. Now, the elders encourage people to take comfort in each other as they wish. Children are raised together in a creche, to free up more hands for work. Those found guilty of jealous behavior are sent out towards the Lost to spend a week or more alone with their thoughts, for such behavior threatens the community.

Action - Discover Something New
A month ago, a man was sent Lost as penance for hurting another person in a fight. Now he has returned, with word of a large series of ruins nearly entirely buried in sand beyond where anyone normally travels.

Quite aside from the half bridge, the three sentinels and the recently discovered ruins, out on the edge of the shallows is The Derelict, what was once a mighty seagoing vessel now fallen to ruination, in waters too shallow for its draft, half-beached on a skerry. With no means of getting it seaworthy, it was deemed of little use by more cautious leadership.

Action: Discover something new

A woman delving into the tidal caves found an elevated side-chamber that had been used as a cache by someone in the before time. A large stock of solar batteries, still in a usable state. Perhaps we can power some of the more strange and venerable before-craft as we try to get our fleet in order?

The debate is spirited, but eventually an agreement is reached: enough solar batteries to power the detectors that don't need other repairs - about half of them - with the rest to the fleet. In truth, that's probably all Jiwo and Menlaos were after. A handful of the before-craft will have to be left unrestored, but Xanthé the fleet engineer says they can still provide replacement parts for the others. The possibility of an expedition to the newly found ruins has everyone excited, though plans would still need to be made.

A charismatic young girl convinces many to help her with an elaborate scheme. What is it? Who joins her endeavors? Start a project to reflect.

Ino is young, barely an adult by our standards, but her determination is without equal. As soon as she learned about the batteries and metal detectors, she started haranguing the other young people to take them and set off towards the Lost. She does not listen to the voices of reason, telling her to wait but a few days until the fleet is ready, and to take the ships through the much safer shallows. Instead she plans to set off through the ravines, scanning them as she goes to try and find new ore pits. Many of our younger citizens join her expedition, as they are eager to prove their courage and their worth.

We are uneasy at the idea, the way is long and there will be no way for us to stay in contact with them, but Ino is not to be dissuaded and her followers are getting more agitated by the day.

Start a project
Ino gathers two dozen youngsters and takes the metal detectors on an ambitious expedition into the Lost. They plan to make their way to the ruins, marking every ore-pit they encounter along the way. Once there, they plan to start searching the ruins until we send a ship to get them, and all their new-found knowledge, back.

Action: Start a discussion
While the initiative shown by Ino and her followers is commendable, sending so many members of our workforce away on such a long expedition is seen by many as an unwise choice. In these trying times, should we give a group of our citizens the authority needed to oversee our future, so as to avoid inefficient allocation of our still limited resources?

Thankfully a lot of the work was complete before Ino and her expedition set off, so that the remaining villagers could finish patching up about half of our vessels. The fleet is not back to its pre-war strength, far from it, but at least we now have enough ships to resume expeditions across the shallow plains. The fortuitous discovery of the solar batteries also allowed us to get a single valuable hovercraft running. Barely. Many of its parts are old and some seem like they would crumble at the simplest touch. We should use it with caution until we can spend more time and resources to properly repair it.

Spring - Week 6

quote:

What natural predators roam this area? Are you safe?

The ravines and mist make for a harsh landscape, where few large animals can live. Those who survive must hunt anything that they can find. Great cats, known as Cra'gar roam the crags alone, their agility letting them climb areas that man fears to tread. They live on fish, birds and the occasional unwary hunter. In the waters, saw-toothed Shrek swarm anything that dares swim over the deeps. Often their fins can be seen slicing through the waters in chase of the fishing fleet.

Most feared of all are the packs of Wor Dog'i - legend of the Time Before tells of when man made the Dog'i pets, when they were small and friendly. But later they were turned into ravenous beasts of cruel hunger, and turned on their former masters. Now the Wor Dog'i packs can be found roaming everywhere, claiming territory and hunting all that wanders through it. Though they cannot climb the cliffs as well as the Cra'gar, they do not fear even groups of men - the only safety from a pack is to climb to kill a few of them at a distance, before the pack can work itself into a frenzy.

Action: Start a Project

With so many of the young planning to be gone from the community for weeks, and more to be regularly out with the newly repaired fishing fleet, people begin to grow concerned about the safety of the community. There aren't enough people now to stand watch around the community all night long. Vanda, one of the women who runs the community creche, comes up with a solution of having the children gather rocks to build a wall across some of the entrances to the community, so there are fewer places that need to be guarded.

It was the children who discovered it. What had seemed a useful source of loose rocks turned out to be something else entirely, as the pile collapsed inwards to reveal a cave, high and dry, that someone in the before times had gone to the trouble of concealing and sealing up. Where are you storing your food? Why is this a risky place to store things?
During the war, the Jackals targeted our storehouses, looting and destroying most of them. Since then we've been storing our food in a series of small caves near our homes. At the time this was a good choice - the caves were less convenient but much easier to guard and harder to find. But our people are finding that the network of caverns is much more extensive than we'd thought, and what seem to be solid walls may merely be thin barriers separating the known chambers and the hidden ones. The revelation that they were used in the Before Time raises even more questions. We do not know what lies within, and one our most critical resources is right in the middle of that growing mystery.

Action: Start a Project

The repaired hovercraft provides an opportunity to restore our abandoned shellfish farms, since it lets us haul the needed materials and protect the workers without worrying about being stranded by the tides. Since we discovered the caverns, we have told our children to search for stones in other parts of the ravine, but one boy, the one that had initially discovered the cave, keeps sneaking away. He seems to feel that the cave ought to be his to explore and took the matter into his own hands. While digging he encountered a hard plastic surface, and after a burst of frenetic activity opened the box to reveal human remains inside. Shocked by his discovery, he ran to the adult supervising the children and told her about the unmarked grave.

The newly discovered cave seems to be an unmarked place of burial, possibly from the Before Time. Our community is split on how to proceed. Spring - Week 10

quote:

An old piece of machinery is discovered, cursed and dangerous. How does the community destroy it?

As the bodies were removed from the cave for investigation, several strange piles of shiny metal were found laying on the ground. The forms were like boxes with wheels and several strange arms hanging off of each side. Elder Vestin was asked to look at each of the piles, to see if he recognised them to be anything of value, but they were beyond his knowledge. All he knew were that the symbols painted onto the metal were signs of warning and danger, but the parts looked like they might be useful.

It took three men to lift each strange thing high enough to slide a sheet of plastic underneath it, allowing people to pull each machine out into the sunlight while work continued on finding and removing the bodies from the cave.

Had the children not been working on the wall, there would have been no warning as the strange metal piles began to stir in unison, each arm moving to push the blocky body into the air, tipping the thing onto the small wheels that lined one side. A moment later, a small opening appeared on the end of the main body of the thing, and a smaller head-like block emerged to look around, fixing on the bodies. The screams of children brought armed men running to the scene, where the metal monsters had each grabbed a corpse and begun to drag it back towards the cave. Obviously the metal beasts were hungry, and the cave had been sealed for good reason!

A hail of gunfire punched holes into the metal beasts bodies, one of them tipping over onto it's side as sparks flew. Blue smoke emerged from the holes as strange unnatural sounds and lights screeched from the wounded creatures as the men continued to fire. Eventually, the beasts stopped moving and seemed to be dead.

The elders cursed the guards for their carelessness - In their panic, they had fired nearly all of the community's small stockpile of ammunition.

Start a Discussion
With an ammunition shortage now in addition to a manpower shortage, the Elders have grown concerned with the community's ability to defend itself against both beast, Jackal and other threats from the unknown. How should we allocate our limited labor in order to improve our safety again?

Ino's expedition

Many moons have past since Ino and her followers have left us and finally the date we had convened on arrives. Ships bring back the expedition and while some of our children have been lost, most are still alive.

Ino says they encountered a single ore pit, in the windiest channel of our shattered land. It seems all the safer alternatives have already been exhausted. In addition she tells us of a faint metal signal buried underneath the sand of the old ruins. While faint, the signal is detectable over a large area, hinting at an immense object, buried deep below. Ino says that they tried to reach it, but the ever coming and going tide makes digging deep and fast enough a real challenge.

The return of the expedition overshadows it, but Tyro and his crews have finished repairing the shellfish farms and placed the first seed shellfish. It will be some time before the first harvest comes in, but the crews do not come back empty handed. As a welcome home feast, baskets of fresh oysters and mussels are offloaded into eager arms, the feral descendants of the abandoned harvests from the war. For one day at least, everyone eats well.

Spring - Week 12

quote:

Someone new arrives. Who?

Our children are not the only ones to arrive. With them comes Makaeda, an old warrior and explorer who claims to have come from a distant land, far from the waters, a windswept grassy plain, dotted with ancient ruins. He says he ran afoul of a local leader and was exiled. Eventually he settled in a town known to us, well leeward. This town was able to seal itself off from the Jackals during the war, so we lost contact with them. Makaeda explains that after this, a sickness came upon the townsfolk, eventually wiping them out. He proved immune, and after burying the dead, left that place. It was then that Ino's expedition came across him. Ino vouches for his skill with sword and pistol, and his survival skills. For his part, Makeada merely asks for a place among our warriors and no special treatment.

Action: Start a project
Though difficult to reach, the ore pit Ino's expedition discovered is worth exploiting. But it will almost certainly play out quickly, which means the community's need has become dire. Apparently having half expected this outcome, Menlaos and Jiwo come forward with a new plan - to mine the Derelict. It's the surest source of metals in the area; it had been ignored until because of how far away it was, but the one part of the Derelict itself can be converted into a secure base - practically a fort - while crews break the rest of the ship. With few other options available, plans are finalized and survey crews sent out to prepare the way.

At first glance they seem to be other survivors of the plague, but Makaeda warns us that these people were outcasts, living separately from the townsfolk, and it is possible that the plague is still ongoing in their community. They seem to be healthy at first glance, but how are we to know for sure. Still they are complete families, with young children and babes in tow, and they neither know this land, nor do they have any resources on their own. Turning them back would probably mean sending them to their death.

Action: Start a discussion
What should we do with the refugees? Can we take it upon ourselves to refuse an influx of new families? Should we risk taking them in, or can we condemn them to death?

If they are willing to abide by our ways, we take them in straight away. They are fellow humans in need. Only if they bring dissent and discord should they have to go elsewhere.

We should not turn them away, but neither should we ignore the danger. Give them food and supplies and quarantine them in a dry, safe cave for a few weeks. Once we know the sickness is not among them, then we can welcome them fully.

We desperately need the manpower, and the new blood will help the village. But we need to quarantine them for a few weeks or we risk illness.

Build A Wall

The final stone wall isn't much - with no mortar, it stands only five feet tall and two feet thick. But it should be enough to make it hard to sneak through the canyon, allowing fewer guards to protect that entrance. A few men idly ponder about harvesting lumber to build a couple guard towers on either side of the canyon, and to string lights along the wall. A project for later, if it seems worth it.

??? ?
We should take them in, but watch them closely for any sign of the plague that has already cost so many lives.

Summer - Week 2

quote:

Summer is a time for conquest and the gathering of might. Start a project related to military readiness and conquest.

A wall has been built, the population has swollen with outsiders and the hovercraft once again travels the waters. The young men of the community now boast of their strength, telling tales of how they had beaten back the metal spindly things a few weeks before. The community is stronger than it has been in years! Maybe it's time to raid the Jackals and take back all that they have stolen over the years.

Action: Start a project
The reckless youth and a few older men who should know better begin gathering supplies for a raid against the Jackals.

Summer - Week 3

quote:

Predators and bad omens are afoot. What measures do you take to keep everyone safe and under surveillance? Do not reduce project dice this week

Jackals! It seems we weren't the only ones planning a raid, though this was nothing like the brutality of the war. We recalled everyone to the village: The derelict miners, the spindly thing repurposers, the raiders, all together to present a united front, no stragglers to be ambushed. We are unified and resolute, all looking out for one another, each one of us responsible to ensure none of us are left behind. Our safety is in our togetherness and mutual trust: Moments of crisis like this only serve to strengthen our bonds. There is no shortage of courage here. We weather the storm, the Jackals are sent away empty-handed and blooded.

What shall we do to end the Jackal threat?

The youth were already planning to raid the Jackals, but maybe we should make it a full assault.

The reason they still plague us is we've never been able to find their lair. Find that, and we can root them out once and for all. So before we commit our forces, we should send out scouting parties.
