quote:

For a long time, we were at war with The Jackals. Now, finally, we've driven them off, and we're left with this: a year of relative peace. One quiet year, with which to build our community up and learn again how to work together. Come Winter, the Frost Shepherds will arrive and we might not survive the encounter. This is when it will end. But we don't know about that yet. What we know is that right now, in this moment, there is an opportunity to build something.
This is Breathes the Sea (game 1), a game of The Quiet Year for the following people:
  1. UnCO3
  2. Tyrannosaurus
  3. megane
  4. Dog Kisser
This is our turn order. Our setup thread is here.

Who are we?
Our community lives on a ragged coast that is beautiful and deadly in equal measure, wracked with storms and intermittent eerie calms. To the North is the shimmering sea and the legendary Smoking Isle; to the South is the glimmering jungle filled with flowers and predators. We survive off farmed kelp and the molluscs and fish our divers catch beneath the waves, though our farms have fallen into disrepair since the start of the war with the Jackals. Much of the nearby seabed is thickly forested with coral, by and large jagged and bone-white and concealing both food and treasures from the days of old. The wondrous night-time tide of blue light we call the Captured Stars is little consolation.

Mysteries abound – from the Oo to the West, where maneaters roam, to the mighty sunken Vessel in the bay to the East, piled high with ancient technology and poisonous to the water around it. We find ourselves ignorant and ill-favoured – we know nothing of the before times, and the gods have abandoned us. Beauty cannot fill empty stomachs.

At the very least, there’s plenty of clean water.

How do I take my turn?
First, you access the Roll20 tabletop and draw a card from the current season's deck. This will tell you to do something, often answer a question.

Second, you resolve the oracle instructions, changing the map and performing actions as necessary.

Third, you reduce the count of every Project by 1. When a Project reaches 0, it's finished – whoever started it describes how it ends. Projects that end prematurely due to the oracle's instructions are described by whoever drew the card.

Fourth, you take your own action (unless the oracle says that you don't act this turn) – Start a Project, Discover Something New or Hold a Discussion:
  • If you Start a Project, pick an appropriate duration from 1 to 6 Weeks and draw it on the map (or add an image).
  • If you Discover Something New, add it to the map.
  • if you Hold a Discussion, start out with a question or a statement. Everyone else then gets to make one statement representing a sentiment in the community. If you started with a question, you then end with another statement. Add a red dot to the map near the subject of the Discussion.
Fifth, you export the map from RealtimeBoard as an image.

Sixth, make a post in the following format:
Season and Week
Oracle question
Resolution to Oracle question, with image if you used one
Resolution to finished projects, if you started them
Your action, with image if you used one
Updated map
Projects list (mark out Projects that reached 0 this turn with e.g. bold or sirens)
Abundances list
Scarcities list
Contempt list

Game Tips
  1. Make every turn count! We only get 40-50, so they all need to meaningfully move the story forward. Make use of existing characters where you can, and introduce and name new ones when they add something new. Say where the windfall of food comes from. Tell us the stranger's name. Reintegrate, change our circumstances, add new details, push the story forwards.
  2. Resources are there to influence how we play, define what's reasonable for the community to do and guide their actions, rather than as traits to be min-maxed.
  3. Abundances and Scarcities are only for when we have far more or less of something we need. Otherwise, we have just enough (or it's not important).
  4. Intangible Resources (e.g. mercy) can be great themes, but if we focus too much on them the story can become ungrounded.
  5. Keep it short – 2-3 sentences is good for an action or oracle resolution.
  6. Characters are important, but the game is about the community as a whole, not just a few people.
  7. Everything that happens must come from player actions and card draws. There are no free actions. You can add immediate consequences, but not longer-term follow-ups (unless you use another action/card).
  8. If a card tells you to take an action (e.g. Start a Project), you still get your normal action on top of that unless explicitly told that you don't. If a card asks you to draw more cards, do so even if you cross over into the next deck.

Thread Rules
  1. Post within 24 hours when your turn or a Discussion comes up, or let us know you're writing it. If you don't, you'll be skipped to keep things moving.
  2. No OOC chat about the narrative content of the game (utility stuff like questions about the Roll20 tabletop is fine).
  3. Remember to describe your finished projects (unless they get terminated prematurely) – this will usually happen on someone else's turn.
  4. Only draw your card when you've got time to post, just in case you draw, don't have time after all and get skipped.
  5. When you take a Contempt token, name the action that caused it.
  6. During Discussions, just post your statement whenever you can rather than in the turn order.

Spring – Week 1

quote:

A young boy starts digging in the ground, and discovers something unexpected. What is it?
Pule often swims near the Vessel despite warnings that the water there will kill him one day. Perhaps he is strong, or just lucky. Either way, he survived swimming so close that he found something strange under the thick layer of muck on the Vessel’s surface.

A door. It opens. Even he didn’t have the strength of will to enter immediately, so he returned to tell the rest.

Action – Start a Project: We won’t last long without our staple food. Everyone bands together to replant and transplant edible kelp from across the bays into the once-carefully tended gardens by our shore. It will take time, but we should be able to avoid serious starvation.

An old piece of machinery is discovered, cursed and dangerous. How does the community destroy it?

We tell the young ones to stay away from the vessel but, of course, they do not listen. The "danger of the unknown" only piques their curiosity. They dare one another to swim further and further inside; at least until the first body is found. It is a man-- Gods know how old-- in some kind of a protective metal shell. Whether he was trying to escape the vessel or enter it we will never know. But he's a part of it now forever. Barnacles have attached him and his carapace to a wall.

Action – Discover Something New: Some suggest we should try to recover such an artifact. It could be a resource, a tool for us (and there are hints of more deeper inside!). But most think we should let the dead be still lest we tempt them into awakening .

There's another community somewhere on the map. Where are they? What sets them apart from you?

A group of star-watchers sails close to the village one morning. They raise their hands in greeting, but do not stop; they are not enemies, but not really friends either. Their village is on the next peninsula, but they spend most of their time at sea. They know much about boats and sailing, far more than we do, and have some secret way of finding islands that are days or even weeks away.

Once they have passed by, Shai says we should take a boat and go visit them, but others mutter that they can't be trusted. Shai doesn't like hearing that, so he sits on a rock, glaring at the ocean.

Action - Start a Project
There is a warm wind, and then a shower of rain, and everyone knows that means the storm season will be here all too soon. Normally we would have repaired and rebuilt our homes to resist the furious weather during winter, but the war kept us busy and so it was put off -- maybe it's already too late, say some of us. We begin gathering driftwood and winding rope, but while we work there is a lot of finger pointing and grumbling.

Two of the community's youngest members get into a fight. What provoked them?

Pule and his sister Yota had to be separated after a squabble. They refused to speak to one another for days, but eventually the stories were drawn from them in pieces and assembled into something approaching the truth. Yota had insisted she be taken to see the Sunken Men, and Pule at length conceded. But when they arrived, Yota began chipping away at the metal shell, eventually breaking off a piece and bringing it up with her!

She concealed it from him until they returned, and when she showed him he demanded she return it. She refused, and they fought. They cannot be compelled to speak to eachother even now.

Action - Hold A Discussion
The Vessel and the Sunken Men discovered around it are cursed - they angered the gods with their hubris, and for that they have been chained below the waters for ever and for all. We should return the artifact and take nothing further lest their curse rub off on us!

What natural predators roam this area? Are you safe?
Dreadful creatures live under the North horizon – sharks are the least of our concern out at sea – but if we’re safe if we don’t stray far from shore. No, the real threat is the manifold, many-formed maneaters from the Oo. They make their home there, but they hunt up and down the bay. When we travel West we go in armed groups wielding torches – to go alone is suicide.

A nightmare.

Action – Start a Project: The gods do not favour us now, and a great storm is coming – who knows what will happen if they remain so angry and aloof? The elders say young Yota must go under the waters to atone for her misdeed and save us from divine wrath. They will oversee the ceremony, but Yota must go down alone. Some of the younger men will stand guard on the shore. If she returns, then the gods favour her. If not, then they only favour us.

It's a cornocupia of wildlife there. Fish of every species swim in vast schools around the structures and great flocks fly overheard. So of course that's where we often drop our hooks and speardivers. Legends say that men and women once lived in the Scrapers but surely that's nonsense. First, how could anyone actually live there and be protected from the ocean? Second, why would anyone even want to? It seems like it would be very stressful. Always worrying about leaks...

Action – Start a Project: The star-watchers did us no favors in the war. But we didn't ask for aid we knew wouldn't come and they didn't support the Jackals either. Now that the fighting is done, perhaps it is finally time to reopen trade?

Spring - Week 7

quote:

Alarming weather patterns destroy something. How and what?

We were too late.

In the depths of the night we are awakened by a dreadful howling. The first storm of the year has come, ravenous from its winter sleep. Our village is besieged, first by scathing winds, then by torrential rain, and finally by the crashing waves. Families huddle with their children, taking shelter as best they can, but the sky and sea are without mercy.

When morning breaks, we take stock of the damage. Several homes lay in ruins. Others stand defiantly, but with rooves askew and ropes frayed to breaking. As for our people, there are several injuries from the cold and from flying debris, and a few villagers are worse off -- Merne's leg and arm are broken, and Zee has a nasty gash on her leg. But perhaps the gods have been merciful after all, for no one has died. There is only one person unaccounted for -- Yota. Her house is undamaged, her family safe, and her mother swears she was indoors when the storm hit... but the girl has vanished into thin air.

Action - Discover Something New

Some women out combing the beach for flotsam and jetsam instead find strange tracks on the beach, uncovered by the storm. In one direction, they lead out into the bay, under the water and the coral. In the other, they enter the jungle, hidden amidst the undergrowth and covered in ivy. But now we know where to begin it would be easy enough for us to follow them in either direction. Someone suggests they may have been made by some monster from the Oo, but the elders scoff; they were probably built by the ancients for whatever inscrutable purpose.

It should still finish - the homes will be prepared for storms - but it doesn't have to finish exactly as intended when it was started, e.g. we could have fewer than expected, only enough for some families or groups within the community. Perhaps shelter will remain a Scarcity, but not for all.

quote:

You see a Bad omen. What is it?
The Captured Stars, that wonderful blue tide that lights our nights in troubled times, has faded.

Opinions are divided on the cause of it, and more importantly what it means... but, then, opinions were divided on what it meant in the first place. Some swore the water bathed in their light was holy, healing wounds and clearing the mind. Others shunned it completely, refusing to go out in the water while their power held sway. Murmurs in the village suggest that they began to fade when the Vessel was first breached, but who can recall when a thing whose very nature is change began to change so strangely? One thing is certain - the night is a little lonelier now.

Action - Start A New Project
After a starved maneater from the Oo made it almost to the village in its hunger, we were forced to make a difficult decision: the Oo, long-feared and almost legendary in stature, would need to be addressed. We are not warriors - not any longer, not since the wretched war - but neither are we cowards, and we are unwilling to stay and wait for the beasts to overrun us. We are men and women, descendants of giants who once held the world in the palm of their hands, who built the Oo in the first place!

So the Vessel is poison to us – then we just have to create armour against the water. Our land is littered with seemingly-inconsequential debris from old times that we could fashion into such wear. Do this and we can freely descend into the Vessel, uncover its secrets, and perhaps put a stop to the curse.

It’s a tantalising thought, but the best many of us can do is scavenge for the materials she needs and let her do her work.

Action – Discover Something New: It starts with a cough, then foaming at the mouth, then blood from the nose, eyes, and gums. Over a week, Pule is completely bedridden with the agony, and many of those who swim closer to shore are complaining of rashes and blisters. Did we not satisfy the gods with Yato’s actions? We're were barely a community before. But if the war with the Jackals did anything good, it was bring us together. Things are... well, in many ways things better now. It's ironic, yes? There is more cooperation when it comes to raising children, for instance. People help one another patch up buildings and boats and such. Still, childhood mortality rates are high and kids are forced to grow up fast. When you are self-sufficient, when you can fish and hunt and feed yourself, you are an adult and you are mostly on your own.

With our normal water source becoming possibly tainted, some of our people have been traveling inland to the great waterfall, to drink and bathe in the pool of clear, clean water at its base. It is a ways to walk, so it is not a great source of everyday water for the village, but it is an awe-inspiring place. This is no time to feast. Our ancestors are choking on the black waters of the bay, and the maneaters are making a counterattack. Some say we must beg the Gods’ forgiveness – others say we should not forgive them for the hardship they put us through. These trials will eat us alive one way or another if we do not devote ourselves to overcoming them.

Summer – Week 5

quote:

Summer is a time for conquest and the gathering of might. Start a project related to military readiness and conquest.

Burn the flowers. Destroy the totems. Death to the Gods.

Action – Discover Something New: Old Isileli bades us burn the fires hot. It is not often we try and shape metal. We are a people of wood and bone and tooth. Precious little remains from the ancient times and our knowledge of how to shape it is all but lost. Still, Isileli remembers. He remembers stories. His grandfather spoke of his grandfather who could bend metal to his will.

He remembers enough. Our warriors will not be harmed by the Gods.

Summer - Week 6

quote:

Someone leaves the community. Who? What are they looking for?

We're so busy that we don't even notice right away that Sano is gone. She was one of the oldest and wisest among us, and though she tells no one she is leaving, we all know why; she was devoted to the gods all her life. Her children have children of their own, and her husband died years ago. Seeing the old totems afire must have been the last straw.

Action - Begin a Project
We have not heard from the star-watchers in some time; perhaps they have left on their journey. We should sail around the horn and scout out their village. If they are there, we will speak to them. If not, well, we can claim their homes and such as our own, as they said.

Project Complete
Protected by their metal shells, our bravest men and women approach the totems of the Gods. They burn the flowers first and they fear divine reprisal. But when none comes, they are emboldened. They leave no traces of what once was. Let it be with memory, too.

We will find new Gods.

Summer - Week 7

quote:

A headstrong community member decides to put one of their ideas in motion. Start a foolish project.
Isileli stood by as the totems burned, his lined face neutral though he must surely have felt turmoil in his heart. And yet his the heart of the maker, a heart that always seeks ways to make things anew. As he felt the heat pouring off the fractured idols, an idea was kindled into his mind. The village would tear down the old ways, would tear down their very past, to make something unique to them. Using scraps of ancient metals and the heat of the ashes of their faith, he would create a new steel, an iron backbone to keep the village strong.

Action - Hold A Discussion
So... Isileli. Should we, uh, talk him down from this? Casting aside the gods is one thing, disgracing them is quite another!

Project Complete
Our brave explorers have returned, suits stinking of mud and worse but apparently unharmed by their venture into the Vessel. They return with stories of things they've seen, of the dead who lay rotting within even now, but more importantly they return with tools. Sealed within an impervious compartment, they found many strange objects made of a material harder than anything we have access to. Isileli insists he be given access to them, to anything pulled from the Vessel whether whole or fragmentary.
