Summer – Week 8

quote:

Something goes foul and supplies are ruined.

Add a new Scarcity.
One morning we awake to a horrific sight – much of our kelp farm has turned black and frail and is bitter on our tongues when pulled from the water. It’s not long before the entire farm is washed away by sea currents. All we can do is watch. Few want to speak for or against the gods in the wake of our impulsive decision to destroy the totems, though Lanuola, one of the few holdouts, has whispered darkly against Pule, Yota, Asoese, and now Isileli. It is retribution, she says; it is war.

Action – Discover Something New: The great white bird comes back the next night, and silently glides right over us as it did before. We come out of our shacks and tents to watch, and it’s plain to all that the creature flies lower than it did in Spring. What does it hunger for? Hopefully not us.

Project complete - Investigate the star-watcher village

When our scouts reach the other village, it is obviously deserted. They took most of the food, and what they left is rotten. Their homes lie empty, their tools are scattered, their boats are gone.

One odd thing stands out. In the center of the village, a building has been burned to the ground. Naught but ashes and blackened sticks remain. Where it stood, they erected what is clearly an effigy of the great bird we saw. Shai looks at it, at the sky, at the rotten food, then counts on his fingers. Ah, he says, they must've left about when it showed up the first time.

But she tells us not worry. She prayed on the mountain for many days. New gods are coming. Gods who won't poison our waters when we believe in them or poison our food when we don't. She saw it in a dream.

Summer - Week 10

Summer is fleeting. Discard the top two cards of the top of the deck and take two actions this week.

Action - Start a Project

Our young people grow restless in the summer heat. Normally they would have kelp to tend, and swimming to amuse them, but now they sit around causing trouble. A group of them have gotten it into their heads to follow the strange tracks on the beach into the jungle, heading deeper and deeper into the south with each trip. They don't tell the elders about any of this, of course.

Action - Discover Something New

The taint has rendered our seas even more barren than usual. The spots where the coral still lives are shrinking, and the fish are less numerous than in previous years. But the area around the Scrapers is like an oasis. Our fishermen say that, if anything, it is even more vibrant than before, and the sharpness that pervades the rest of the water isn't felt there. Perhaps something there protects against the poison?

We hear the screams first. Then we hear the tell-tale sounds of a man-eater. Our warriors rush forward and with spear and fire drive off the beast. It is only afterwards that we realize who we've saved. The face tattoos give him away. He is a Jackal. The enemy.

Autumn - Week 2

quote:

Disease spreads throughout the community. You spend the week quarantining and treating the disease. Project dice are not reduced this week.

Red spots and coughing afflict the weaker members of our community. By now we do not even bother to curse the gods or bemoan our misfortune -- we simply do our best to heal them, irritably administering the herbs and poultices as the elders direct. Luckily it seems to be a normal illness, rather than (yet another) divine plague, and after a few days of misery the afflicted begin feeling better.

However, the question then arises: what brought this sickness? Many blame the Jackal Iosefa, others say it is a foul wind rising from the murdered ancestors, others point to contact with tainted water.

Action - Begin a Project

After a long argument, the elder Tal shouts everyone down. This is what will happen. It is clear now that a curse lies upon us. To undo the curse, a sacrifice is required. We will take Iosefa to the Vessel and we will seal him inside. The diving-suit will protect whoever must carry him down to the depths and close the horrible door. This is what will happen.

Harvest is here and plentiful. Add an Abundance.

Though we traditionally keep well clear of the Scrapers, the bounty of fish - healthy fish! - surrounding them is impossible to ignore. Our fishermen chanced the waters around the ancient structures cautiously, then with increasing boldness as none were stricken down. Again and again, we turn to our distant ancestors for aid, and again and again they provide. We chose well when we cast the gods away!

Action - Discover Something New
Isileli has been busy since the return of the tools from the Vessel, dutifully cleaning and scraping them clean of muck, rust and taint. He has spent hours studying them, grappling with how they may have been used and how they may be used to better the present. He and Asoese (and others, like minded) have compiled their findings and shared it with the village. Much we had thought was magic or the work of the gods was nothing so mystical, it seems.
