Spring - Week 3

quote:

There's another community somewhere on the map. Where are they? What sets them apart from you?

A group of star-watchers sails close to the village one morning. They raise their hands in greeting, but do not stop; they are not enemies, but not really friends either. Their village is on the next peninsula, but they spend most of their time at sea. They know much about boats and sailing, far more than we do, and have some secret way of finding islands that are days or even weeks away.

Once they have passed by, Shai says we should take a boat and go visit them, but others mutter that they can't be trusted. Shai doesn't like hearing that, so he sits on a rock, glaring at the ocean.

Action - Start a Project
There is a warm wind, and then a shower of rain, and everyone knows that means the storm season will be here all too soon. Normally we would have repaired and rebuilt our homes to resist the furious weather during winter, but the war kept us busy and so it was put off -- maybe it's already too late, say some of us. We begin gathering driftwood and winding rope, but while we work there is a lot of finger pointing and grumbling.

Abundances: potable water
Scarcities: pre-war knowledge, gods, kelp

Spring - Week 7

quote:

Alarming weather patterns destroy something. How and what?

We were too late.

In the depths of the night we are awakened by a dreadful howling. The first storm of the year has come, ravenous from its winter sleep. Our village is besieged, first by scathing winds, then by torrential rain, and finally by the crashing waves. Families huddle with their children, taking shelter as best they can, but the sky and sea are without mercy.

When morning breaks, we take stock of the damage. Several homes lay in ruins. Others stand defiantly, but with rooves askew and ropes frayed to breaking. As for our people, there are several injuries from the cold and from flying debris, and a few villagers are worse off -- Merne's leg and arm are broken, and Zee has a nasty gash on her leg. But perhaps the gods have been merciful after all, for no one has died. There is only one person unaccounted for -- Yota. Her house is undamaged, her family safe, and her mother swears she was indoors when the storm hit... but the girl has vanished into thin air.

Action - Discover Something New

Some women out combing the beach for flotsam and jetsam instead find strange tracks on the beach, uncovered by the storm. In one direction, they lead out into the bay, under the water and the coral. In the other, they enter the jungle, hidden amidst the undergrowth and covered in ivy. But now we know where to begin it would be easy enough for us to follow them in either direction. Someone suggests they may have been made by some monster from the Oo, but the elders scoff; they were probably built by the ancients for whatever inscrutable purpose.

Projects: Prepare homes for storm season (1), Reopen trade routes (1)
Abundances: potable water
Scarcities: pre-war knowledge, gods, shelter
Contempt: UnCO3 (0), Tyrannosaurus (0), megane (0), Dog Kisser (0)

(I'm not sure how to handle the "prepare homes" project in this case, ruleswise; for now I've left it, but if we feel it should be cancelled or changed or something, I'll edit that in. I'm fine with it continuing, just with a different outcome.)

Project complete: Prepare homes for storms
We grimly finish repairs and reinforcements on the houses that are still standing, and salvage what we can from the wreckage of those that are beyond saving. We have several families without homes of their own - they are currently squeezed in with their neighbors or in makeshift tents - but the rest of the buildings should now be study enough to last.

Spring - Week 11

quote:

What's the most beautiful thing in this area?

With our normal water source becoming possibly tainted, some of our people have been traveling inland to the great waterfall, to drink and bathe in the pool of clear, clean water at its base. It is a ways to walk, so it is not a great source of everyday water for the village, but it is an awe-inspiring place. An old grandfather is splashing in the water with his granddaughter; he laughs to her that, when he was her age, we came here to hear the voices of the gods in the sound of the rushing water. For a few moments, everyone is still, listening.

Action - Hold a discussion
"We have been apart from the gods for too long," says a young man, holding his squirming daughter in his arms. "We must find a way to appease them, before they send a storm even worse than the last, or choke us to death with this poison. I say we build a shrine near the falls, choose someone to perform the old rites... make whatever sacrifices we need to. Perhaps the gods will forgive us, and return."

Summer - Week 2

quote:

Predators and bad omens are afoot. You are careless, and someone goes missing under ominous circumstances. Who?

While our attack on the beasts of the Oo was a success, something unspeakable has been stirred from the dark heart of that place. Asoese's uncle comes running, screaming of a terrible Thing, a slavering horror with eyes like pale fire, that burst from the undergrowth when he and his niece were preparing food for the feast. Their family's house was destroyed by the storm, and they have been living in a tent -- there was no safe place to hide from the monster. He ran towards the village, but she ran the other way, into the deep jungle, the beast hot on her heels.

Action - Begin a Project

We must find her! The uncle will not be silenced, and he rallies a number of young, headstrong warriors to chase after her. They will not hear words of caution or patience, they simply take up their spears and plunge into the wilderness in pursuit of Asoese and the great beast.

Project Complete - Track down Asoese

The hunting party returns at daybreak, carrying Asoese between them. She is merely exhausted and bruised, but the hunting party is smaller than when they left. They explain that they followed the trail to an ancient ruin in the southern jungle, where Asoese had managed to climb on top of a fallen building where the creature could not reach. The hunters charged heedlessly to her rescue, and the mad beast turned on them. By the time they drove it off, three of our warriors were dead, including Asoese's uncle. No one knows what to say.

Summer - Week 6

quote:

Someone leaves the community. Who? What are they looking for?

We're so busy that we don't even notice right away that Sano is gone. She was one of the oldest and wisest among us, and though she tells no one she is leaving, we all know why; she was devoted to the gods all her life. Her children have children of their own, and her husband died years ago. Seeing the old totems afire must have been the last straw.

Action - Begin a Project
We have not heard from the star-watchers in some time; perhaps they have left on their journey. We should sail around the horn and scout out their village. If they are there, we will speak to them. If not, well, we can claim their homes and such as our own, as they said.

Project complete - Investigate the star-watcher village

When our scouts reach the other village, it is obviously deserted. They took most of the food, and what they left is rotten. Their homes lie empty, their tools are scattered, their boats are gone.

One odd thing stands out. In the center of the village, a building has been burned to the ground. Naught but ashes and blackened sticks remain. Where it stood, they erected what is clearly an effigy of the great bird we saw. Shai looks at it, at the sky, at the rotten food, then counts on his fingers. Ah, he says, they must've left about when it showed up the first time.

Summer - Week 10

quote:

Summer is fleeting. Discard the top two cards of the top of the deck and take two actions this week.

Action - Start a Project

Our young people grow restless in the summer heat. Normally they would have kelp to tend, and swimming to amuse them, but now they sit around causing trouble. A group of them have gotten it into their heads to follow the strange tracks on the beach into the jungle, heading deeper and deeper into the south with each trip. They don't tell the elders about any of this, of course.

Action - Discover Something New

The taint has rendered our seas even more barren than usual. The spots where the coral still lives are shrinking, and the fish are less numerous than in previous years. But the area around the Scrapers is like an oasis. Our fishermen say that, if anything, it is even more vibrant than before, and the sharpness that pervades the rest of the water isn't felt there. Perhaps something there protects against the poison?

Autumn - Week 2

quote:

Disease spreads throughout the community. You spend the week quarantining and treating the disease. Project dice are not reduced this week.

Red spots and coughing afflict the weaker members of our community. By now we do not even bother to curse the gods or bemoan our misfortune -- we simply do our best to heal them, irritably administering the herbs and poultices as the elders direct. Luckily it seems to be a normal illness, rather than (yet another) divine plague, and after a few days of misery the afflicted begin feeling better.

However, the question then arises: what brought this sickness? Many blame the Jackal Iosefa, others say it is a foul wind rising from the murdered ancestors, others point to contact with tainted water.

Action - Begin a Project

After a long argument, the elder Tal shouts everyone down. This is what will happen. It is clear now that a curse lies upon us. To undo the curse, a sacrifice is required. We will take Iosefa to the Vessel and we will seal him inside. The diving-suit will protect whoever must carry him down to the depths and close the horrible door. This is what will happen.

Project complete - Follow the Tracks

On their fourth expedition, the track-followers come across a huge ruined facility in the jungle, hung with vines and covered in rust. The tracks go inside of it, and they can see a great metal thing, reminiscent of the Vessel, squatting on the tracks just inside the entrance. A strange noise comes from inside, and they flee back to the village.

The Jackals are all too happy to help us move the Vessel. Almost as if they expected us to ask. We will take our boats and towlines, and complete Elder Tal's command: we will cast the accursed thing off the edge of the world forever.

Winter – Week 1

quote:

All the animals and young children are crying and won't stop. Hold a discussion about this, in addition to your regular action for the week.

We have been busy, and worked hard. But a toll has been taken on our children; this year they have had to grow up quickly, and they have seen too much that is frightening and not enough of their parents and elders as they should. As the winds begin to chill, they grow scared and nervous, and watch both the jungle and the sea for terrors real and imagined. Pule was a brave face and helped them be strong, but now he is dead.

Action – Hold a Discussion:
How can we comfort our children? How can we make them feel safe again?

Action – Discover Something New:

Yota has returned. She simply walked out of the jungle one morning, the day before her sister Kala is to be married. She will not say where she has been the half-year she has been gone, but she is different. Being away from us has changed her. We try to tell her gently of her brother's death and her sister's marriage, but she says she already knows.
