Economic liberalization, free trade, and entangling economic ties are some of the best ways to prevent war between nations (though by no means sufficient in and of themselves). Also normally I'd say economic liberalization leads to political liberalization but I think the entire GCC puts that lie to bed. Still a good thing in and of itself however.

Read the post again, particularly the second line: The Iron Rose posted:poo poo I'm down for it. Economic liberalization, free trade, and entangling economic ties are some of the best ways to prevent war between nations (though by no means sufficient in and of themselves). His whole point was about preventing war through trade ties, which is not exactly a novel or controversial idea. I mean, if you're totally baffled by the argument, a quick Google would fix you up.

There have been plenty of times where trading partners have gone to war though so while it's not a new idea it's also not really an effective one.

There's a motorhome/RV pursuit currently ongoing in LA, a domestic violence parolee with an 11-month old and 3-year old in the RV. Unfortunately, the chopper had to turn back due to lovely weather and congested skies, so the active feed just died. Stay tuned! http://ktla.com/2018/05/01/lapd-pursue-motor-home-in-hollywood-area/

States have security interests and economic interests, and while both are incredibly important, every country will put security first if when trade and national security collide. Trade isn't a guarantor of peace. Sure helps keep it though. I sure as hell don't know how to fix a regressive shithole but honestly I don't think anyone else does either.

I've been wondering for a while, how much the proliferation of black market tech/comms (cell phones, dvd players) has done for or to the NK public at large besides increase their desire for South Korean soap operas. Like, do they know how much literally every country that isn't Myanmar has it better than them? Could the potential collapse of a testing site be a convenient excuse to try to normalize relations and trade rather than ratchet down and risking China dropping support or taking over completely?

That would be one hell of a legal fight in an untested legal area. Trade increases the opportunity cost of war therefore more trade = less likelihood of war.

Everybody knows the example of Germany and the USSR, and of *insert whatever combination of European nations* in 1913. The Mongols. Pre-colonial SE Asia. If you're trading with someone, it means they have something you want. Guess what starts a lot of wars.
