poo poo I'm down for it. Economic liberalization, free trade, and entangling economic ties are some of the best ways to prevent war between nations (though by no means sufficient in and of themselves).

Also normally I'd say economic liberalization leads to political liberalization but I think the entire GCC puts that lie to bed. Still a good thing in and of itself however.

His whole point was about preventing war through trade ties, which is not exactly a novel or controversial idea. I mean, if you're totally baffled by the argument, a quick Google would fix you up.

There's a motorhome/RV pursuit currently ongoing in LA, a domestic violence parolee with an 11-month old and 3-year old in the RV. Unfortunately, the chopper had to turn back due to lovely weather and congested skies, so the active feed just died.

Now Ronnie Jackson's assessment is looking more suspect, too. Had Donald not tried to put him up for VA Secretary with no qualifications, then Donald would at least still have one credible medical examination.

Absolutely true! States have security interests and economic interests, and while both are incredibly important, every country will put security first if when trade and national security collide. Trade isn't a guarantor of peace.

Sure helps keep it though.

I've been wondering for a while, how much the proliferation of black market tech/comms (cell phones, dvd players) has done for or to the NK public at large besides increase their desire for South Korean soap operas. Like, do they know how much literally every country that isn't Myanmar has it better than them? Could the potential collapse of a testing site be a convenient excuse to try to normalize relations and trade rather than ratchet down and risking China dropping support or taking over completely?

Ahhhh. No. Most wars are between trade partners. Including the worst wars. Marriage, trade, blood relations, all of these things are assumed to dampen the likelihood of war but they flat out DO NOT.

quote:

In a tense meeting in early March with the special counsel, President Trump’s lawyers insisted he had no obligation to talk with federal investigators probing Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential campaign.

But special counsel Robert S. Mueller III responded that he had another option if Trump declined: He could issue a subpoena for the president to appear before a grand jury, according to four people familiar with the encounter.

Mueller’s warning — the first time he is known to have mentioned a possible subpoena to Trump’s legal team — spurred a sharp retort from John Dowd, then the president’s lead lawyer.

“This isn’t some game,” Dowd said, according to two people with knowledge of his comments. “You are screwing with the work of the president of the United States.”

The flare-up set in motion weeks of turmoil among Trump’s attorneys as they debated how to deal with the special counsel’s request for an interview, a dispute that ultimately led to Dowd’s resignation.

Edit: Side note, issuing the President a subpoena is completely untested. Ken Starr issued one to Clinton, then dropped it when Clinton volunteered to testify. That would be one hell of a legal fight in an untested legal area.

I guess it depends on how loosely you want to define "trade partners" I guess but no, most wars are not between trade partners. Trade increases the opportunity cost of war therefore more trade = less likelihood of war.

Isn't this partly explained by the fact that nations trade with other countries they are close enough to go to war against, and nations go to war against other countries they're close enough to trade with? Is there an example of a pair of neighboring autarkies with long lasting peace?

That's part of it. Look at basically the entirety of European and African history for examples. Guess who Japan's biggest trading partners were in the 1930s. Everybody knows the example of Germany and the USSR, and of *insert whatever combination of European nations* in 1913. The Mongols. Pre-colonial SE Asia. If you're trading with someone, it means they have something you want. Guess what starts a lot of wars.
