It would be pretty cool if the Yankees would consider losing a few games. As a gesture of good faith, the Red Sox have demonstrated how to do it and that it can be OK.

This is also a byproduct of the same feature of baseball players that make them so good for statistical analysis: production in baseball is very easy to translate into a quantitative metric. It doesn't matter if those metrics are wOBA or pitcher wins, the point is that it is easy for fans to just decontextualize the player from his product. Very few players have meaningful individual style and mostly it just doesn't matter. Add in the 162 game season and many many people who nominally care about baseball turn into box score readers before the all star break and the dehumanization is complete.

If you ignore opening day, where he went 3-5 with a triple and home run his stats are: 16 for 118 with 4 walks and 1 sac fly. No extra base hits at all. Thats a .142/.169/.142 slash line. His season OPS is lower than alot of guys OBP and is lower than league average SLG. This but Jackie Bradley Jr.

Maybe Ohtani will be good enough they can get the rule changed to be more accommodating of two-way players in the next CBA They should just DH for the 2nd baseman or something in games he pitches.

People need to stop talking about pitch framing as if it is anything other than a byproduct of umpires being bad at their job. A strike/ball determination should be made when the ball crosses the front of the plate and catcher motion should be irrelevant.
