You must defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance.

Cobra Kai is an amazingly badass name for a dojo.

How realistic are the timeframes for martial arts training? Are Miguel or Robbie really going to start training in September and be a black belt ready to win the martial arts tournament by June? I assume it's sped up some because no one wants to watch three seasons of punching drills before they're allowed to get in real fights, but I'm curious as to how long it takes to become ready to enter a competition like that.

When i was a kid growing up my mom signed me up for tae kwon do classes and it took like 3 years to make it to black belt. You go to classes about 3-4 times a week which is like general practice.

Once every 3-4 months theres a regional meeting/examination type deal where you perform you "kata" for whichever level you're at and spar someone so yeah, its pretty accelerated in the show.

No.

They might be able to get into decent shape in nine months, and they could certainly learn enough combatives to be a threat to somebody in an actual fight, but I don't know that they'd be able to learn enough formal karate to win a tournament against kids that have been studying for years, possibly a decade or more.

Which is kind of the funny thing; Johnny could absolutely teach Miguel how to beat the poo poo out of one, two, maybe three or four random high school kids in a few months. Most of that would be getting him in shape, teaching him how to hit and kick people without hurting himself, teaching him where to hit and kick people, and most importantly, teaching him not to be afraid of hitting somebody, and not afraid of being hit. But even after a year, you're probably still doing basic kata 'wrong.'

In other words, it's very believable that Johnny could take three to six months and get Miguel to the point that he could fend off Kyler and crew. It's not believable that in even nine months, he could have Miguel winning local tournament championships.

As an example, take a look at the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marine_Corps_Martial_Arts_Program
77.5 hours of training gets you to 'green belt,' at which point you're considered to have mastered the basics, and can become an instructor. An additional 73 hours gets you to black belt

So, 156 hours, say you're training for two hours per day, six days a week, gets you there in less than four months.

It also wouldn't take Johnny very long to teach Miguel the most important lesson in dealing with dumb bullies in movies and TV shows: step aside and let them hurt themselves.

Sounds to me like you guys just don't realize how good of senseis Johnny and Danny are. Hell, Miagi taught Danny how to win a karate tournament in the same amount of time.

Other theory, every other under 17 year old kid in the valley is terrible at karate and put patches on their gi so they don't accidentally wear it inside out again.

Daniel "won" the tournament because a) Bobby got himself DQd, b) he was granted unnatural strength by the Demon Sorcerer Miyagi, and c) using illegal techniques. Also, he had the power of 80's training montages and power-up music.

I always loved the final fight of KK2 because it very rapidly just becomes a slugfest.

Right? Capoeira has no place at a karate tournament. The move was bad, but some of the earlier fights at the tournament have ridiculous jumping-flipping-handspringing bullshit.

I mean nobody cares and that's not why anybody was tuning in and it's fun to look at, but it irrationally angers me.

(also, when I was double-checking the last episode for that just now, I saw that the placemarker on the video is a silhouette of the crane kick instead of a red dot :3: )

I'm fully sensitive to why Johnny's methods can be harmful and dangerous, but I was a big fan of his ruthless devil-may-care attitude against the kids acting like special snowflakes for any reason. I don't know if it was meant to be a commentary on safe space bullshit, but Johnny is absolutely right. Nobody in the real world is going to care, and you have to get over yourself to get very far. I'd imagine we all know people who missed that memo, and it's more sad than anything.

Where is there an F Bomb? Danielle has the scene where they cut as he is about to say "motherfucker" but there are no F bombs.

I don't disagree about what you say in general about straying from the PG nature. There just aren't any F bombs in Cobra Kai.

I only wished that the cuts to exteriors in Georgia weren’t so painfully not-the-valley. You knew when they were filming on location, but it should not have been that obvious when they weren’t, and it was.

Small context: I lived off Wilbur and Sherman Way in Reseda from 2013-2014, a stone’s throw from Tampa and Saticoy where the real South Seas apartments are. The condos shown next door only got built within the past two years - they could have almost had the empty lot from where Miyagi’s asswhooping took place as a shooting location. Alas.
