I just picked PoE2 up and was going through the very starting area, where Berath gives you the choice to server her or go to the Wheel. gently caress it, I thought, and chose the Wheel.

Two screens of exposition later and the game crashed. I figure it was the game just giving me the finger for being dumb.

Is that true? I started as an evoker wizard for my Watcher, but I haven’t done much at all yet - just got to the first port and talked to the governor so I wouldn’t feel terrible about re-rolling.

Okay, so I'm off the first island and into the world. First stop: Fort Deadlight

I really liked how you have multiple options for getting in. I didn't feel like fighting an entire fort full of pirates, so I snuck in under the cover of night and infiltrated the dungeons beneath the fort. After exploring that place as fully as I could, I went up into the forge and got a quest to help free a group of pirates without causing any alarm. My Watcher (rogue) easily stealthed his way past the jail guards and freed the prisoners. No bloodshed, just a quick in and out job. The ability to have that kind of stealth available is nice and robust, and I hope there are more opportunities to tackle quests that way.

I'm currently at the underground docks, preparing to take on the pirate crew and ring the bell so I can kill Benweth, that fucker. I love everything about this game so far. It's such an improvement in QoL, mechanics, graphics, and interactivity on PoE 1, I can't imagine going back right now. I think that feeling is exacerbated with the true feeling of, I can go anywhere now. The ocean is open, and I can just sail around. With PoE1, it's hard for me to get past that initial hump of Gilded Vale ---> Caed Nua, where the game actually starts feeling more open.

How soon should I head towards the capital of the archipelago? It's on my map, but after I'm done with Fort Deadlight, I'm wondering if I should sail around and just explore a bit.

In the souls series, levels are really just a count of how many points you put into your main stats - the level # itself is meaningless. So I would argue those did away with the concept of discrete levels to power up with.

My game crashed last night so I went digging into my files to find the crash report. I found there is a 46 page draft for a Pillars of Eternity P&PRPG that came with my steam copy. I read a little of it, and boy, it is pretty ridiculous.

Finally got back into this game after a few false starts. The more I play, the more I feel like they really did make this as close to BG2 as they could with the amount of poo poo you can get into. I’m sure I’m not saying anything new, but Neketaka is such a cool, deep city.

I went to Poko Kahara for my first venture out from the big city and the giant Engwithan statue fight was amazing. I did not expect that, and fighting large enemies is really nice looking. The dungeon was interesting and had clever encounters.

After returning to Neketaka, I got caught up in a whole Delvers Row situation which sent me beneath the city where I found a talking homicidal sword, and another cool dungeon area. I’m saved right before what I assume will be a boss fight - just opened the door that requires both shells.

Game is fun and good.

Neketaka is a fantastic city to explore. Larger and deeper than Defiance Bay, and I feel like the quests are much more interesting. I didn’t care about exploding DB - it seemed like a minor stop for side quests. I’ve been wandering around Neketaka for hours (days in game) and still feel like I haven’t discovered everything. I love it, more than I loved Akthatkla.

I’m sure people have mentioned this before, but the fact Deadfire is so open ended means I end up ignoring quests for a while - and when I finally get around to them, I just ~crush~ my opponents. I had a battle with a bunch of druids that I expect was supposed to be difficult. Not too tough when I roll in there at level 15 and explode all of them in 2 rounds with high level AOE spells.

There's an option to scale enemy levels up to yours wherever you go. It doesn't work quite as I expected it to though, sometimes it seems to make enemies that should be my level actually be above my level. And like the DLC content is still far, far harder than the base endgame despite both being "scaled" to level 20. But I found it worked decently to prevent things from getting too easy.

Yeah, I’m going to enable that, along with expert mode and some blessings for my second run through. I haven’t gone to Ashen Maw yet, so I don’t know how much main story is left. Is there gaming after the finishing of the main storyline, or should I get all dlcs and side quests done before then?

It also has like a half dozen dudes handing out bounties and mapping/exploration quests that send you all over the world map. The game practically tells you to go run around a while and then come back.

Yeah, that’s pretty much how I’m playing it. Hell, I didn’t even visit the Brass Citadel or the Spire until my third or fourth stop in the city. Got a few quests, went out and was a privateer and dungeon diver for a while, then came back to turn in and get more. It spreads the city content out so it’s not 4 hours of walking and talking.

Ashen Maw down. One more stop to go.

Two dragons encountered, two dragons not killed. That was all a pretty intense encounter, even if there was almost no combat. I was able to talk my way past the giants. I loved the gravity behind Eothas’ voice, and Xoti acting like a star struck fan girl was funny. I’m glad Eder called Eothas out on his bullshit as well.

I have so many quests and quests lines unfinished, but I really want to just bum rush the end and do a full complete run next time.

I don’t remember the name the cleric spell (ionic bean?) that shoots a big ball of energy that heals you/hurts enemies. I found that to be very useful in the temple, especially in the room in the second level that has a bunch of assholes in it.

Isn't that a lie, at least for the Beast of Winter? Or maybe level scaling works differently there. I played it on level 18 I think and I still had trouble and say enemies with skulls, i.e. higher level ones.

I’m in the middle of that one with a level 15-16 party and it’s a frigging slog. I love the story and art and music and everything, but the enemies are just rough.

The big question though - will there be a turn-based option?

Lucas Archer

This may or may not be a 'normal' option for other games, I'm not sure, but I do really appreciate the easy and quick way I can go in to the graphics menu for PoE2 and turn the framerate down to 30FPS. The game makes my laptop run super hot, along with taking forever to load, and turning the frame rate down makes things load that much faster, my computer runs cooler, and I don't even notice the difference. So thanks for that!

I've started a new game, this time my Watcher is a Skald, and I'm enjoying playing around with Chanter powers. I multied Tekehu in my last playthrough, but never really used him, so I didn't engage with the Chanter mechanics at all. This time I can make Tekehu a pure druid.

On my RTWP playthrough as a Skald and wow, this is a lot more fun than I was expecting. Paralyzing entire groups of enemies and then hitting them with that lightning blast is so much fun, especially as I'm laying down two hailstorms in a row with Tekehu, and Serafen is busy using his mind bullets. Maia is doing her usual crazy damage from the back and Pallegina is up front as a crusader, holding the line and setting everything on fire.

I'm about halfway through PoE2 using RTwP as opposed to turn based, and I can't believe how much more fun I'm having. I know people have mentioned it before, re: the trash mob fights, but it really does make a big difference for me psychologically when I come across a fight and my first thought isn't "oh god, gonna be here for an hour" - I can just let auto-pilot do it's thing, be done in a couple of minutes, and move on.

One of these days I'm going to play a character that doesn't mind doing underhanded stuff, or at least doesn't take the "give money, complete quest" option every time.

How are Chanters in Deadfire, melee-wise? I remember them being difficult to play in PoE1 because while they had great Endurance, they had pretty bad Deflection so the early game was pretty drat tough on PotD as melee characters (you could easily get one-shot).

I'm playing a pure Skald, up front with weapons, and I'm loving it. But then again, I am playing on Normal so it might be different on a higher difficulty.

My first playthrough, I didn't use Tekehu at all - I made him a chanter, tossed him on the boat and promptly forgot he existed.

This time around, I made him a druid. He is an absolute beast and I love it. I feel like he can fill both the AOE damage role Aloth usually fills, and gives some sweet healing like I use Xoti for. He's a permanent fixture in my party, and the fact that he's an incorrigible flirt makes it that much more entertaining.

I decided to pick up POE1 again, and started with a relatively new character - Cipher, with Eder, Aloth and Durance right before heading down into the Temple of Eothas. I was playing on normal.

I must have completely forgotten how to play this game because WOOF I got my rear end handed to me by those spirits. My Watcher went down multiple times in the fights, and even though I eventually made it to Caed Nua, the spirit battle in the foyer absolutely wrecked my party - so much so that I actually ran out of camping supplies because I was getting murdered so much. My Watcher actually died a couple of times. And Maerwald was much more of a beast than I remember - did he always heal so much before?

I think I should restart completely now, and choose a different class. I enjoy the cipher, but it's getting a little stale. Maybe a chanter? Or I'm also thinking a rogue - I've never done a Watcher rogue before, never actually had a rogue in my party for an extended period of time, so that might the route I go this time.

Gotta say, I love the loot in PoE2. There's plenty of garbage that is useful early on, that you can sell for a very satisfying amount of money, and the uniques you can pick up all have interesting abilities, enchantments, and it always feels like there could be another one just around the corner.

The easiest way to get legitimate money by the time you hit around 7/8 is to farm Crookspur slavers. There's two or three respawning ships that make the rounds into and out of Crookspur, so if you hang out there and move around in circles, you'll bump into them frequently. Their boarding encounters are comically simple with two tanks and some ranged damage, and all their drops sell for exceptionally good money for their level. You can set up some simple AI scripts for healing/damage, put on some good food bonuses, and let the game play itself for a while until you're as rich as you want.

Do those ships still spawn after you clear out Crookspur?

I hosed it up and Maia left the party when Onekuza offered me the mission to blow up the RDC powder stores. I didn't think she'd leave when I was offered the mission, just if I went through with it. Nope, off she goes with a bunch of really good equipment.

Ah well. Next time through, I'm going to go the RDC route and see how it plays. For now, I'll stick with the Huana. I just wish I hadn't done that mission yet because Maia is a loving beast in combat and I could really use her when I tackle the DLC areas.

And I've been playing my Watcher chanter for almost 40 hours now and I just finally read my chanter weapon specifics - I can never run out of Empower points if I just use them to Empower an invocation? Yes, please, and thank you. Starting off a combat by Empowering Seven Nights She Waited While the White Winds Wept and watching enemies just explode as the bolts fly out of me... oh, I'll never get tired of that. And it just refills all of my phrases so I can immediately cast another!

This playthrough has really opened my eyes to the chanter and how fun it is.

There actually is a way to get Maia to stay through the Huana option, but the conditions are so specific that I think only a tiny percentage of people who've ever completed Deadfire have actually managed to get it to show up as an option.

Chanter's definitely an incredibly solid class, though. I think the whole "guy who sings" aesthetic and the relatively long lead-in time for most of your abilities in combat tends to turn people off of it, but once you figure out the various builds for improving your Phrase gain, you can take off like a rocket. It's honestly hard for me to imagine doing PotD without upgraded Hel-Hyraf's and Ben Fidel's, and Urdel/Gurdel's ability to clog up choke points for free is something almost no other class in the game can do.

Is that the romance option? I was aware of it, but never had the right conversations trigger. Or if they did, I answered the wrong way. Maybe I should have just sent her back to the boat when I had the chance in the initial convo with the queen.

Chanters are amazing. Definitely gonna dual Tekehu next time I play - he's awesome as a pure druid, but I want to see what chanter abilities he comes to play with and how it could synergize with his druid spells.
