It's about finding that next group of core players we can win with in the next 6, 8, 10 years. Let's face it, it's hard for 20-, 21-, 22-year-olds to lead an NHL team. Look at the playoffs.

Even worse, in the first expansion they put all the new teams in the same division so they would fight amongst their crappy selves for the honor of being destroyed by an existing team. The Blues won this honor in the first 3 years of expansion, 1968, 1969, 1970 and were suitably destroyed, swept in all 3 Cup Finals series.

That’s the funny part about the famous Bobby Orr flying photo.

It’s OT of game 4 to complete a sweep. Doesn’t have quite the majesty of some other famous goals behind it.

Its pretty hard to get good first liners and top pairing defensemen when teams can protect 7 forwards and 3 defensemen.

You can rewatch the Vegas draft analysis by the NHL network from last summer to see how mediocre their roster looks. Before this season none of those guys were top 6 locks going into this year on any other team. You have to take that into perspective to really understand how amazing and unprecedented this run is.

Even Marchessault, who scored 30 last year, had questions. The dude took awhile to make the jump to the NHL, he's 27 now in what is really his 3rd year as an NHL regular, and made a big leap in scoring from the year prior. Plus his contract was set to expire after this year, and I believe Florida was worried about the cap space needed to resign a player they weren't sure of yet.

Reilly Smith also had a contract where the cap hit took a jump this season, and the Panthers just wanted to unload it since he was really an expensive 3rd liner at that point. Solid for sure, but expensive.

And if you really think the draft was heavily favored for Vegas, just look at what Gellant throws out on their blueline. Derek Engelland is a competent defenseman suddenly, and it's insane. And all the rest, except Schmidt, pretty much follow the same story. There's really no indication of talent on this team except for the results of this season.

I don't buy that. Florida was in the middle of a major shift in GM philosophy and Marchessault didn't fall into that.
I absolutely thought Florida was insane for paying to get rid of him.

For fucks sake though, Vegas took Alexei Emelin from the Habs. Could've had Hudon for free, but no they took Emelin. There was nothing stellar about their picks and we all predicted basement (just a bit above Detroit and Vancouver). They're going to eat it eventually, but eventually isn't now.

Gallant has done a stellar job in putting a system that the team can buy into in place and the team does what needs to get done. LA is weak and the Sharks went full Shorks. The Jets or Preds were always going to be a supremely tough task and the Jets showed the mountain the Knights have to climb in Gm1.

I hope the Knights don't climb that mountain, personally, but I won't be aggrieved if they do.

Ehhh people here were definitely super high on Schmidt/Miller/Theodore. Miller had really great advanced stats and a lot of people thought he could do good things with a bigger role. And Theodore would have been in the NHL way sooner on any other team but the Ducks, he was just blocked -- but he had produced at every level since his draft year.

You've gotta watch Glenn Hall highlights from 68 when they gave Montreal a really good series (they got swept but the games were all 1-goal games (3–2 (OT), 1–0. 4–3 (OT), and 3–2, and Hall won the Conn Smythe) and in 69 when he won the Vezina at age 38 (as a duo with Jacques Plante no less and Scotty Bowman coaching), he was insane.

But it was a genuine something. Kucherov needs therapy. He was projecting his anger about getting whooped onto Connolly’s ankle. A licensed professional could teach him some breathing exercises or another alternative coping mechanism.
