The production was hosed by the producer stealing literally half the budget at the last second. Also by being incompetent and wrong-headed, but those are different problems.

I think, and if I'm wrong I'll eat a bug, but I think the production is leaning a lot into "Bad Sci-Fi magazine cover illustration" territory, which seems both like the correct way to adapt this yet an absurd thing to make on this scale. Did not know about the money

I mean, how much do you know about Hubbard's bibliography? He's the pulp sci-fi king. His work is associated more with that sort of illustration than any other (because he was broke and took a poo poo ton of meth and wrote so many sci-fi stories that he filled many many magazines all on his own under innumerable pseudonyms and won a Guinness World Record)

e: please, everyone, listen to Andy Daly play Hubbard on The Dead Author's Podcast, an incredibly illuminating journey and one of the funniest episodes of a podcast ever recorded.

I know the broad strokes but ive never sat down and read a hubbard. I did attempt a copy of dianetics but the style put me off a lot. I think its an accurate presentation of pulp is my point, they drink bright green liquids and live in bright green matte painting cities

Bad sci-fi magazine illustrations rule, though. Especially when things were still allowed to be chunky, like in '70s and '80s sci-fi.

That movie gets close to The Room levels of hilarity.

I have not watched The Mandalorian so I don't know what his accessories are.

Here he is conversing with KITT and being buddies with Optimus Prime (or Optimus is helping him home when he's drunk).

I am sad to report Battlefield Earth is actually just a little too boring to be some kind of subversive goofball masterpiece. It has its moments but does not really rise to the heights of true pulp. I'm sorry, I thought there might have been something there.

It's a movie of laughable moments, but it's not like The Room or Cats 2019. It's not so bad that it's good. It's a lot like Wing Commander. You get some comedy gold when that pilot crashes on the runway, can't get saved, and then get's space-plowed off the ship.

The beginning has good Intentional Jokes like the auto repair statue being mistaken for a god and the food being green slop, or the protagonist reading the Declaration of Independence in a perfectly generic library atrium. But it can't keep up the camp, the action and story are too Studio Competent and therefore flat.

Much like when he reprises this role in Rogue One a Star Wars Story

https://variety.com/2025/film/news/rian-johnson-star-wars-trilogy-very-conceptual-knives-out-1236459163/

quote:

“Nothing really happened with it,” Johnson said. “We had a great time working together, and they said, ‘Let’s keep doing it.’ I said, ‘Great!’ I would kick ideas around with Kathy. The short version is ‘Knives Out’ happened. I went off and made ‘Knives Out,’ and was off to the races, busy making murder mysteries. It’s the sort of thing if, down the line, there’s an opportunity to do it, or do something else in ‘Star Wars,’ I would be thrilled. But right now I’m just doing my own stuff, and pretty happy.”

Johnson added that his trilogy was “all very conceptual” and that he never developed an “outline or a treatment or anything” for the project.

Wonder what a Knives Out murder mystery set in Star Wars would've looked like
Is that what The Acolyte is in another universe?

Bloom is so good. I mean, I completely get why it didn't hit for many and it's a bit clumsy at times. But the brother relationship super resonates with me and I think it's a movie with a really beautiful heart.
