What I find kind of funny is that there's a guy making a pretty cool mod for Empire at War and he had to come up with a model for the New Republic Starhawk and he ended up with this:

Tapered main hull with a big cross-beam at the front that also contains the hangars.

And now this week, Armada released official images of the Starhawk and some images we got were these:

Which is great, except that those are pictures of the other ship they released: the Onager Star Destroyer.

This is the Starhawk:

i actually really like the starhawk design, it makes a lot of sense considering the background of the ship is the new republic disassembling damaged star destroyers and creating a new frame

also i have a hunch the onager is meant to evoke a crossbow

also the onager design was created back in 2017 as an illustration for the rebel files book

So after looking at all those, one thought comes to me...

"Why do the shuttles need such huge gently caress-off wings when everything in the Star Wars universe can hover?"

usually wings in starwars/sci fi get explained as being essentially heatsinks, or places to put the repulsorlifts

I like to collage blaster designs in photoshop out of old random guns/airguns/etc. and I'm curious if any specific ones stick out as good candidates for translation to 3d models/physical props in your opinion. I use a lot of these also as potential items for swd&d campaigns as well.

I've been really strongly considering some kind of original character (some kind of bounty hunter/smuggler/scoundrel) for cosplay once cons happen again after covid.

I'm thinking of doing a 3d model of one of my blaster designs as a personal fun side project and to improve at some new techniques. I'm curious which one yall think I should try out modelling first?

I have an hypothesis that SW weapons look best when they exist in the Uncanny Valley of IRL guns. Close enough to be looking gunny, but with just the right amount of extraneous details to be ever-so-slightly off.
Either that, or modify specialty weapons like flare guns, olympic shooting pistols, funky paratrooper stuff, weird Cold War prototypes.
Or, you know, whatever works.

sexpig by night posted:

completely agree. Star Wars is a kinda 'junky' world even at the high ends of technology, poo poo just has bits and bobs on it for no real reason and that's important to the aesthetic. It should still read 'gun' from a profile and all but don't be afraid to slap on a completely needless rail or panel or bulk up the muzzle or add some vents and holes.

Yeah that all tracks, here's some examples of what I've bashed together.
