The main problem with ROTJ is basically the same one as The Search For Spock in Star Trek: it follows one of the best and most beloved films in the franchise. Almost any movie that had to follow The Wrath of Khan or The Empire Strikes Back is going to be seen as a letdown, whether its plot actually fails to live up to expectations or not.

I didn't interpret it as Luke letting the Emperor kill him. I saw it more as an act of defiance against Palpatine's command for Luke to kill Vader. I don't think Luke realized Palpatine could zap him with the Force. Until that moment, he's just staring at a really old dude who can barely walk. He looks pretty surprised, and spends the rest of the scene calling for his father to help him.

That's how I always interpreted it.

One thing I've always found really interesting about the entire throne room scene is how relatively unprepared Luke was to face Palpatine. He had maybe gone through Jedi 101 between Obi-Wan and Yoda, but he had failed a number of his tests: the force cave on Dagobah, lifting his X-wing from the swamp, facing Vader and swatting away the objects Vader threw at him with the force, etc.

Yet despite being relatively green, Luke not only defeated Vader without killing him but faced down Palpatine and openly defied him. It speaks to how much "natural talent" (for lack of a better term, since midichlorians still seem controversial) he had with the force.

And about the weirdness of time on the OT, I was mainly thinking about Luke's training, that could have been like 2 days or 2 months

I've always been a bit confused about how much time passes in ESB too, but I assume it's a couple b of weeks to a month: long enough for Luke to receive the equivalent of Jedi training basics.

The ST (haven't seen RoS and don't plan for that to change based on what I've read here) movies provoke a similar reaction to the JJ Trek movies: I watched once and generally thought they were OK (except for Into Darkness). Didn't leave too much of an impression. Probably wouldn't go out of my way to watch them again and much prefer the original movies.

TFA is a lot like Rogue One: empty calories. It's perfectly fine and maybe even impressive when you walk away after seeing it the first time, but then you think about it for a few minutes and realize there isn't much there.

To be fair to Rogue One, the concept of tying the end of that movie with the beginning of ANH was one of the freshest and most original ideas in all the ST. But you get a sense from watching that the entire movie is set dressing for that rather than actually telling a story with real characters.

I think the scene of Kylo smashing his helmet against the wall of the elevator during a tantrum was at least briefly a meme. But you're right: the sequel movies are one of those 'in one ear and out the other' things.

I only say AOTC once but I mostly remember it being interminably boring; sound and fury signifying not much.

I was initially pretty impressed with RotS but as time went on I cooled on it; the exact same cycle I had with Rogue One. I still would say it's the best of the prequels, but....I dunno; I would sit down to watch any of the OT movies; even Jedi, if for the Vader/Palpatine/Luke scenes alone. I probably wouldn't for any of the PT or even ST ones.

I've never particularly liked the "jumping around" duel choreography of the prequels. They overcorrected for the lack of choreography in the OT, which gave the duels some authenticity. I also prefer the 'mystic monk' Yoda of the OT rather than the 'mystic Yoda that does the jumping around dueling' of the PT, but that might just be me.

The Force being what you make of it, light or dark, makes so much sense that I'm not surprised Lucas has moved away from that to blood quantum Force adeptitude.

If Luke had not gone to Cloud City, he would not have faced Vader before he was ready and lost his hand. Tragic, but that lesson about acting before thinking is what saved him in the Death Star II (him looking at his hand and then seeing Vader's severed robot hand was both a reminder of his Cloud City mistake and the similarity between himself and his father).

I tend towards the ' not a mistake' side because selflessness is supposed to be one of the big Jedi "fruits of the spirit".

I think there's been a discussion before about whether to interpret Yoda and Ben's warnings as legitimate danger for Luke or because he wasn't following the path they had in mind for him. I don't have a particular opinion on that but it adds an interesting dimension to the plot.

After all the buildup for Boba Fett being a badass bounty hunter, his notable appearance in Jedi was falling into a spiked anus. It's actually pretty hilarious.

Didn't the Special Editions get rid of Lapti Nek and Yub Nub? Why cut into the wonderful "Wesa FREE" scene with a catchy song everyone loves, right?
