Mulva posted:Listen, Finn served an important role in the movie: Making it clear that miscegenation is wrong and that he should stay with his own kind, which is why nobody took him seriously about his interest in Rey and she never shows the slightest attraction to him and they had him a more appropriate black woman with his exact backstory to keep him in his lane. It's part of the movie's overall theme of the nature of nobility and bloodlines and their role in forging the great people that shape destiny. Pollyanna posted:This film never shuts up and it gave me an immense headache. It started off on the wrong foot with the first 15~20 minutes being incredibly rushed and choppy, and my mood only got worse from there. It's such a loving mess. It's not a fluke of the beginning either, the cinematography is nauseating throughout and I am not kidding about that headache. I think it was all the strobing that did it, I'm not even epileptic and that hurt me after a bit. Good post in general but holy gently caress I feel this. The first 20 minutes don't fit into the act structure in any way shape or form. It's like they took every beat that should have been in episode 2 and tossed them into a "previously on" segment. The edit is sort of tolerable in the middle, but as soon as we get to the sith planet gabbagool or whatever I have zero sense of what's happening anymore. I just need a god drat establishing shot holy gently caress. Oh wow, that palpatine robot wide shot is cool, why didn't they open with that? Wait, why did they cut to a loving stadium crowd? Are those people? Why isn't anything lit? Wait a second, they're directly below the battle? HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF AN EXTERIOR ESTABLISHING WIDE SHOT JESUS CHRIST

yet another loving thing Rey and Kylo are marching angrily toward each other, waves crashing around them, lightsabers out, dicks in the wind. I'm thinking "oh I get it, this is the big duke-out where they mirror the lava fight in 3 except this time it's WATER! Well that's corny but at least we got a great theme out of it. John Williams better John Williams the gently caress out of this, let's go" there's no music for that whole fight scene at all

Just Chamber posted:It's a solid 5/10. Though if you loved it you're loving nuts. Eh, I dunno. TFA was a solid 5/10, this movie is definitely worse. At least TFA didn't have anything quite as egregious as "chewie gets a medal". This is the "Into Darkness" of Star Wars: a tone poem of half-remembered themes and references that amounts to nothing in the end except a fleeting sense of nostalgia

PJOmega posted:Insert the old VGCats comic about a headcrab doing a gorgeous wrapping job on a turd. That's JJ. He wraps a gift and only while it is halfway through being unwrapped does he even try to figure out what's in the box. It's hack bullshit. The only person who has ever done this and gotten away with it is David Lynch.

I don't think TLJ gave them a ton to work with, but "TROS sucks because of Rian Johnson" is a shockingly dumb take. I'm flustered.

As an exercise, I tried to mentally plot Finn's character arc over the trilogy. I now have a headache, it was a bad idea.

Rewatching bits and pieces of TFA, I can't understand why they separated Poe and Finn for basically the rest of the trilogy. They have great chemistry, the audience pretty much universally loved their buddy schtick, the actors clearly get along, so what happened? Both of them became completely unmoored in TLJ and by the last one they're barely cohesive characters anymore. It's a shame.

Horizon Burning posted:disney was terrified about the finn/poe shipping memes, and the fact that boyega and isaac were pushing for it, too I really want to believe it's something other than kathleen kennedy sitting in her office with her fingers in her ears shouting "no homo" until people stop talking about it, but I'm having a hard time shaking that vision.

Babysitter Super Sleuth posted:Its not that they "recoiled suddenly," a core aspect of queerbaiting is never actually delivering, its just that until they were (somehow) blindsidsd by all three of their leads choosing not to renew their contracts, so they had to actually put a pin in it instead of dragging it out for years through sequels and spinoffs. I don't care if they gently caress each other or not, I just wanted to see them be friends in a movie because they're great together ![]() Y'know what, resurrect the old Hope and Crosby "Road to..." movies and put Isaacs and Boyega in there. I'd watch the poo poo out of that.

Pollyanna posted:I still don’t quite understand why TLJ is the nexus for all the sequel trilogy hate. It’s an okay movie, but we’ve had mediocre Star Wars movies before and they didn’t kill nearly as much enthusiasm for the series or drum up nearly as much vitriol as TLJ did. The grand majority of hate centers around that film. Why it and not TFA or TROS? TFA is a bad movie because it immediately throws out the ending of the original trilogy and paints the sequels into a corner nobody involved was smart enough to write themselves out of. In a vacuum, though, it's a decent enough space romp that's worth a watch. TLJ is a bad movie because it seems like it's going somewhere interesting with the A plot but pulls all its punches at the last second. It's almost an interesting take on star wars, which is somehow more irritating than just being another uninteresting take on star wars. Then, there's the B plot, which is straight up garbage that goes nowhere and results in nothing. TROS is the least functional movie in the entire franchise. It's a broken mess that needed another half hour of footage spliced in to make any god drat sense. It is a fancier version of watching JJ Abrams play with a Star Wars Lego set while making whooosh zoom pow noises.

CelticPredator posted:You’ve asked this a few times and like me you won’t understand it because it’s inconsistent. You don't need a coherent explanation of why the movie was bad to answer the question, though. TFA was a decent enough movie but it was widely seen as a rehash of the first film. It was the start of the ride, characters were introduced, people clung on to whatever new world building was there, which wasn't much. TLJ then took the vast majority of that setup and threw it directly into the toilet. It challenged the meta-narrative of the entire franchise, and it didn't resolve that challenge. Personally, I kind of like that it did that. It's a weird loving movie. But I can completely see how people who genuinely love all the star wars would be super confused and kind of sad about most of what happens in it. Also, Canto Bight sucks.
