The old screenwriting thread is locked so I figured I'd start a new one. Whatcha working on? How's it going? Are you planning to submit it somewhere? Put it here and get some notes! Introduce yourself when you post your work. What kind of things do you like to write? Are you trying to do this as a career? Feel free to share resources, your work, the work of others you find inspiring, really anything to do with TV/film screenwriting. Be harsh with critiques, but don't be mean about it. We all gotta start somewhere. If something is posted as a link, don't include it if you're quoting their post in case they modify it. Double posting to get things started. I'm in LA for a week to talk to some people in TV and get some advice about becoming a real-rear end TV writer! I have some coffee meetings with some writers I really respect and admire so I'm already using this trip better than I thought I would. Helps that I'm already unemployed and a friend of mine has a couch in Santa Monica I can stay on. So I hopped a flight to SoCal and rented a car for the week. I'm currently working on a few different pilots, the one closest to something I would consider worth showing to people is this one: EDIT: Find it in the post below! Thanks for starting up a new thread Unmature! Someone posted a really cool resource in the old thread that I couldn't find and don't have bookmarked. I'm hoping it's fairly well known. It's a website where you can search by show title to find copied PDFs of screenplays and scripts. It doesn't have everything, but it has a lot. Does anyone know what I'm describing or have something similar?

Oh cool. I didn't realize there was a new screenwriting thread, such as it is. Hope things pick up here again. I'm trying to write more seriously and it would be nice to post about projects and resources here. I just can't bring myself to go to Reddit or wherever the gently caress. The initial Nicholl Fellowship notifications went out yesterday and I made the first cut. I'm pretty excited about that. It feels like a huge validation after spending the last couple of years wondering if all this time and work was being wasted. Did anyone else enter this year? I realize this is big time thread necromancy, but here are a couple of good sites I use to find scripts to read and study. I figure it's the first page and this is a common request. Scridx was a favorite that I used to recommend a lot, but they seem to have shut down. https://scriptslug.com/ - This is a nice site with a growing number of new and old scripts. Good looking too, especially compared to the typical PDF dumps you find. http://www.script-o-rama.com/table.shtml - This is a list of links to scripts being hosted around the web. More old stuff, but a nice selection. Also, Rian Johnson's site has the scripts for Brick, Brothers Bloom, and Looper available for free download. These are awesome and great examples for formatting and super-economical writing that is still interesting and vibrant. I've read a lot of mixed opinions on the site and the notes you can get, but it always seems like the most disgruntled customers are always the ones most motivated to be vocal about their experiences. If I'm going to throw down the dough required to get eyes on my script then I'd like to feel confident in the value proposition involved. Is it worth it to buy readings/notes? Do reviews tend to be fair? Can a decent script get traction without paying for readings? I don't mind paying to be savaged, but if it's going to be some bored, unobservant pseudo-intern doing it then I can probably find that on my own without paying fifty (EDIT - $75!) bucks for the privilege. I was a professional Script Editor/Doctor for about a year and a half. I think maybe the thing you need to understand most about a place like that is the people looking at your script are likely to be looking at two other scripts in the same day, and will need to write either Development Notes (what we send to writers) or Coverage (what we send to studios) for each. It's very likely they won't have time to read your script more than once, and it's also very likely they'll read your script and then immediately begin writing up a report on it without really having any time for it to sink in/ This can be a problem, as this process doesn't always allow for the... best way to "absorb" a work, especially one that#s written very visually/with directorial cues, or one with a lot of subtlties. Not to toot my own horn, though, but I think despite the hectic working conditions, most of the people at my company really knew what they were talking about. So, my take is that you're essentially going to be paying for a professional's opinion who has read 5000 scripts, but also has a bunch of other poo poo to do that day. I don't know about the Black List, but the biggest problem sites like these have is selling the lie of there being a "formula" to make your script better or, even more ludicrously, there being a formula to make it more sellable. Any place that says you need to hammer and bend your screenplay into following a strict set of guidelines is totally delusional imo. Not sure if anyone is interested, but I just started a tiny youtube channel and was thinking about talking as my time as a script doctor, so if you're interested feel free to check it out and suggest a topic or whatnot.

I've never tried the Blacklist specifically, but yeah, that's basically what I've heard. It's pricey, but I've heard mixed things. I just made the move to Los Angeles and have been having coffee meetings with writers I admire to get advice about the industry and have found that a way better experience than submitting scripts to faceless entities. Of course, not everyone can do that, but if you're in LA you should! Everyone I've reached out to has been super receptive and nice.
