Like, learning the pronouns in Spanish would be a hell of a lot slower if the teacher had to first explain the very concept of an "indirect object" to the class instead of the students already knowing all that stuff from their middle-school English classes. But that's really the only thing that it's good for; prepping you to learn a foreign language, so I'm not quite sure why they make such a big deal out of it for a few years in school. Because you're completely right, you don't need anybody to teach you the grammar of your native language; you've already been speaking it perfectly since you were about three.
