Japanese steel was actually pretty lousy and their swords were very light in weight. They were primarily slashing weapons because japanese warriors were comparatively lightly armoured. Good for removing limbs and lacerating, but not cleaving through metal. The samurai's armour would have been made mostly of leather and wood. He would need some sort of pole-arm and would have to keep his distance utilizing the only advantage he would have which would be mobility.
