EXCEED CHARGE
Merryl Dawson - Outskirts of the town of Convoy
It had been quite a trip, but your little group of faithful had finally arrived at your destination, the appropriately named town of Convoy. About an hour outside of Fleetwood one of the few major cities in what used to be Atlantica’s industrial belt. Even at the edges of town you could tell this place was dying out, you could feel it in the air. Just another deindustrialized town that still existed primarily because of inertia and not much else. The perfect place to find the sort of desperate people who might be receptive to the truth you brought.

Robert Kurth - His Parent’s Basement, Kingvale
It had been a trying few weeks, the cops were all over you after the incident at the facility, but it seemed even they were starting to accept the idea that it must be some sort of freak accident. Though you had heard a few rumors floating around town that the feds might be getting involved, not the Criminal Investigations Bureau, but the Office of Environmental Protection. If they were, they hadn’t bothered to come and interview you yet, though there was no way to know how long that would last (if there was something to the rumors). Still, you are left with a lot of power, a lot of possibility, and not much in the way of obligations. Your parents hadn’t really pushed you to go out and try and find a job yet, though they had been subtly hinting about talking with a shrink who specialized in dealing with trauma.

Desdamona Kilgore - Suburbs of Empire City
You’ve returned home for the first time in years, your parents home in the suburbs outside Empire City, your high school reunion was that evening, but that was a few hours away, and for the moment you have the house to yourself. Your parents were still at work, and your siblings had all moved out to college and lives of their own. What you want to do prior to the reunion is up to you.

Ivar Isaksson - Apartment near Acadia University
It had been a long time since you had been home, and it showed. There was a fine layer of dust on virtually everything, and a letter under your door from your landlord reminding you that you were a month behind and if you didn’t pay soon he was going to kick you out. You had some basic research materials on your targets, but getting it together combined with your trip had eaten up the last of your available funds. You needed some cash, and quickly.

Anton McCormic - Dorm Room on the Campus of Acadia University
You were lucky to have a room all to yourself. Of course as a senior at Acadia University, you got a pretty good number in the housing lottery, so with the extra funds from your scholarship you were able to afford one of the few singles on campus. Most of your peers had moved off campus by this point in their college career, which also helped. The privacy meant you could test out your new abilities in relative peace. It was strange, out of the blue one day it was like a book had opened in your head, and suddenly you saw the fundamental features of the world in a very different way. An infinite array of possibilities tumbled before you, you now had access to knowledge that could completely redefine everything we knew about everything. Magic was real, and you found yourself with an intuitive understanding of how to harness it to construct impossible devices. What limted you was material, just like any other piece of construction the quality of your work was one part skill and two parts ingredients. Your lack of resources meant you had nothing but junk when it came to ingredients and if you truly wanted to construct some of the grand designs that had floated through your head, you’d need to stock up, and that took money.

Allen Cornell - McCready’s Junkyard, Southaven
Sneaking into the junkyard had been easy enough. There was an opening in the fence fairly far from the entrance to the place, and the owner hadn’t checked the fensing in years. In no small part this was due to the fact that it was fairly well known that there was nothing overly valuable there to steal. Mostly it was just busted old appliances and other things would would eventually be sold in bulk to be melted down for raw materials. Of course you still had to be careful. Mr. McCready might be old and half-senile, but he had a reputation for shooting first and asking questions later when it came to trespassers. Still, you should be fine as long as you didn’t make a ton of noise and wake him up.

Franklin Rynn - Sewers outside Lavell
You make your way through the sewers, toting the ill-gotten goods of your rampage. If you keep going you’ll eventually reach the swamp north the city that the sewage system drains into. Clearly, your old life is over, the question now is how your new life will begin.

Merryl Dawson - Convoy

Your followers set to work, driven forward by your speech. You set up camp in an empty lot in a particular decomposing portion of town and set to work preparing for the event. Your follower clean up the debris that had accumulated on the lot, separating out what could be burned and what couldn’t. To say this area was down and out was an understatement, but your groups actions was drawing attention of the residents who were there. They were a group devoid of hope, and it was obvious more than a few of them were regular users of various narcotics. They gathered to see what was happening, any interruption of their lives a welcome one.

You have a small crowd gathering.

Franklin Delano Rynn - Sewers outside Lavell

You attempt to make your way towards where you think the slaughterhouse might be, the problem being you had only ever seen in from your car, and now you were navigating from the sewer system on foot. Your new senses are overwhelming, suddenly gaining such an intense sense of smell leaves you disoriented, combined with not really being quiet sure of your location when you started it makes locating a place you’d only ever passed impossible. After an hour of trudging around you are thoroughly lost. However, despite not knowing where you were, you do manage to catch the scent of something delicious.

Looking around you find you’re in a suburban area near the local swamps, and from the smell it would appear as if someone were having a barbeque, the tantalizing smell of cooking meat dances across your nostrils.

Enjoy your BP.

Alan Cornell - McCready’s Junkyard, Southaven

You place your hands on the husk of what had once been a car reaching out to the strange power that now was a part of you. Absorbing the car was a truly disorienting sensation, only your previous attempt had been anywhere close. It wasn’t painful, just… strange, there weren’t really words to describe it. When it was over the car was gone, and you were different. You were larger than you were before, your skin felt thicker and plate-like structures underneath at key locations.. You felt heavy and physically powerful in a way you hadn’t before, perhaps a side effect of the strength necessary to be able to stand even while covered with who knows how many hundreds of pounds of steel and aluminium. However, your range of movement felt a bit limited, and whatever weapon you were imagining did not appear. It would appear that your power was affected by the quality of the material you absorbed. Your in-fairly good condition refrigerator had given you a better result than a junked car. Still, even if you couldn’t be sure your new form would stop bullets, you’d sure as hell be able to beat the tar out of anyone who tried to get in a fist fight with you.

Robert Kurth - Out and about, Kingvale

You focus in, grasping out with your new sense for the guts of the device, with a little help of your general knowledge of how these devices are supposed to be constructed you manage to luck your way into hitting the right internal switch. There is a clunk and a nice cold soda is sitting in the receptacle.

Desdemona Kilgore - Suburbs of Empire City

Your searches showed about what you expected. Your classmates for the most part were exactly what you’d expect the children of privilege to be. Lots of well paid professionals, a small handful had lucked into careers in finance or the upper echelons of business and would no doubt be considered as if not more successful than you. Of course it was an incomplete picture, most but all of your classmates had profiles of varying degrees of openness, but a few did not or had their settings such that you couldn’t really determine much.

As for your powers, it would appear, that text was not a very conducive medium for expressing your power. The responses to your tests were about what you’d expect. It would appear that meeting you in-person was required to get the full effect.

Anton McCormic - Dorm Room on the Campus of Acadia University

Your drones are crude things, it’s difficult to assemble an articulated leg from loose office supplies after all. Still they were small and quiet, and they could record a small amount of video. However, though they were minimally fit to quietly surveill, infiltration was likely out of their reach. For to be as quiet and small enough to be useful with the supplies and time you had you had to sacrifice speed and dexterity. If you were in a room to deploy them undetected you could likely rely on them to remain that way for some time, but the tiny golems would not be getting anywhere that required getting past a door, window, screen, or any other obstruction.

You have small number of very primitive spy cams. Not bad for paperclips and other loose office supplies. You can deploy them and they’ll hide, but they won’t really be able to get past simple obstacles without being noticed.

Also enjoy your BP.

Ivar Isaksson

You make your raid on the store, the sight of a huge animal sends the people inside into a panic, and they run out screaming. It’s a virtual certainty the police and probably animal control are being called right now. However, as you, still in your wolf form, make your way behind the counter you discover a kink in your plan. There’s a security camera, it’s fairly high up the wall, high enough that it’d be unlikely in the extreme that some random animal attack would result in its destruction. The cash register containing the prize of your effort is squarely within its field of view. You don’t have long to decide what to do, the cops will be here soon, and they may be more willing to fire on an animal than a person.

Ya, you managed roll pretty low, so I figured a twist like this would be more interesting than the shop being closed or the shopkeeper actually having a shotgun behind the counter.

BP - 1

You make your way around campus, contriving reasons to visit various offices and releasing your little spies when you think no one’s looking. Your magical spies settle in, and being their work. Looking through the footage is mostly intensely tedious more than anything else. Hours upon hours of nothing particularly interesting happening. It’s exhausting.

However, just before you give up… paydirt. One of the workers in the finance office had to re enter their password, and your golem got a good look at what she was typing. She wasn’t particularly high up in the office, but it was a start.

Out and About, Kingvale

You keep an eye out for potential targets, in terms of risk/reward an ATM seemed like a much better bet than trying to step into a situation with armed and alert people. You manage to scope out a few ATMs, before finally finding one at a run down gas station on the edge of town. It likely held less cash than a bank’s ATM, but there were also fewer camera’s and witnesses.

Convoy

You give your sermon to the gathered people. It goes over well, people nodding along at your message, helped along by your well polished rhetorical skills and the obvious passion for the subject. You don’t draw any converts, not yet. However, from what your followers can piece together from talking to attendees you’ve laid important groundwork and made quite the first impression. If history is any guide, word of your meeting today should spread in all the right places to ensure your next meeting is even more well attended.

Desdemona Kilgore - Suburbs of Empire City

You make your way to your old school, it’s the first time you’ve been back in years. They had apparently done some serious renovations in the intervening years as you barely recognize the place. The atmosphere was fairly casual, but as soon as you entered all eyes were on you. Thanks to your power you quickly became the figurative belle of the ball. Your work as a mercenary, normally something that would be off putting to this sort of crowd instead took on an air of dangerous mystique. These weren’t your people, but nonetheless they were putty in your hands.

Lavell Suburbs, 1/3 BP

You flee the scene of your “attack” making your way back to the welcoming waters of the bayou. Your escape goes by without incident, and you manage to get far enough away you’re fairly confident you’re not likely to be nabbed by the police.

McCready’s Junkyard, Southaven 0/3 BP

You make your way across the junkyard, not being particularly careful about staying quiet. The car is where you remember it, and you greedily reach out and absorb it. There is a crash as the the various other scrap piled on top of the car falls loudly to the ground, but that is largely beyond your notice. Instead your attention is drawn to the changes this newest acquisition is causing to your body. Your metallic skin gets a big thicker and you feel a bit heavier, at least at first. However, as the engine melts into you, you feel a sudden surge of energy run through your body, you feel even stronger than before, an engine of your very own thumping in your chest filling you with power.

Before you have much a chance to figure out just what this means for you, a loud voice cuts through your thoughts. “What the gently caress is going on here?” It would seem your exploits had awoken McCready.

Enjoy your BP.

Suburbs outside of Arcadia University

Taking out the camera is child’s play, though that combined with the missing money is going to raise even more red flags over this incident than just from the giant animal attack. With the money secture you make your way off into the dark. The area is actually fairly dense, so it takes a while before you’re far enough away to feel comfortable, and you’re fairly certain you were spotted at least once by a random passerby as you made your escape, but in the end, the police or whoever was involved would be looking for a large animal, not a person so as long as law enforcement doesn’t spot your wolf form you shouldn’t be in any danger of discovery.

You set up in your new abode far off the beaten path, in your examination you discover there is in fact some chemical equipment already present. It doesn’t occur to you why until that evening, when a small group of rough looking men approach carrying with them various boxes and jugs. It is then the smell you couldn’t quite recall earlier clicks into place. It would appear that this shack is in fact a meth cook house, and within a few minutes its operators will be upon you. The only question is what to do with them.

Gas Station, Kingvale

You set your plan into motion, the occupants of the store didn’t notice the movement of the camera’s but the doors were not well maintained and the grinding as they locked startled the shop owner. Not of course, that he been able to miss what came next. With a rending crash of shattering glass and tearing plastic, the cash box is torn from the ATM and floats over the store and into your hands. You’re fairly certain no one has seen you, but you’re also certain that there’s no way the store owner hasn’t hit his alarm, you need to move quick because soon this place will be crawling with cops.

Dorm Room on the Campus of Acadia University, 1/3 BP

Making your way to an empty lab, you turn on your computer and login to the school’s network using the stolen credentials. It would appear, much to your delight, that the school was laxer with its money than you had imagined. Even the low level employees had access to the banking software used to process checks. That meant you could use these credentials to issue checks up to $50,000, as many as you wanted, at least until the school’s bank noticed and flagged the transaction. Unfortunately, time was short, there was little doubt that the fact that this account had been accessed from one of the labs would be noticed. This meant that the window until the password was changed or the account was otherwise locked out would be slim. Also, if large sums of money were to mysteriously vanish the school would suddenly begin to look very closely at who had access to these labs, which would narrow the list of suspects substantially.

You make your way away quickly, but not so much as to arouse suspicion, and just in the nick of time. As you make your way of the street, you can see a police cruiser scream by with its lights flashing. Campus of Arcadia University

Now that you had enough funds to stave off immediate disaster, you could focus on your scholarly work. It was not easy going, the symbols on the rope were strange, clearly bearing resemblances to other northern runes, but with significant enough differences to make translation difficult. Your only lead is a reference in an obscure academic tome from the 20s to similar symbols found in an ancient site found by researchers looking to prove viking expeditions to Atlantica occurred sometime around the 10th century. Descriptions of the site in the book were fairly vague, it’s clear time had not been kind to it, but it was your only lead.

Your studies are interrupted when your phone buzzes. It’s a mass-text from the university, advising students and teachers that classes were being suspended due to reports of a dangerous animal on the loose, and reassuring the student body that the authorities were getting involved to locate and capture the animal.

Gethsemane Global Operations HQ

As you work your way through the list of potential deployments a one really jumps out at you. It’s not a glorious mission, and the pay is middling, but the details of the work draw your attention. It appears there is a civil war in Nystria, a small Europan state of little strategic value and one of the rebels trying to break-away from the central government have managed to scrape up enough to try and higher some outside help to provide training. Interesting on its own perhaps, but you also know from keeping up with your briefings that this conflict offers two tantalizing additions for someone of your ambitions. First, none of the superpowers really care about this conflict. Second, the rebel militias are largely untrained have notoriously weak leadership. That means you’d be able to with essentially no oversight or opposition in forging the militias into whatever you wanted, including a personal army. Moreover the lack of outside interest means that you won’t need to worry about stepping on the toes of any intelligence agencies and earning a drone strike in the back for your trouble. It is a golden opportunity, after all, how many chances does one get to go from being a low-level mercenary to a full out warlord.

There are other contracts which offer more cash or more prestige within GGO, but none of the other ones offer even close to the opportunity of the Nystrian contract.

Convoy

You have quite a few people joining your little expedition… at least at first. However, as you wear them down, and the going gets increasingly rough, more and more decide to return home. In the end, after an incredibly rough few days, only about a quarter remain. However, they are ready for the next stage, their minds and souls open and primed for your new truth.

Meth Shack - 1/3 BP

The men cower under your glare. Shocked into incoherence by the situation that faces them. Your captive calls out to his friends to help him, but they just look back like deer in the headlights. It would appear that there was too much fear and not enough greed in their heads at the moment. Your left with the feeling that if things continue as they are, they’re likely to just run off and leave their comrade to his fate.

Campus of Acadia University - 1/3 BP

You exfiltrate some funds as best as you are able, which despite your planning is not particularly well. Most people never really develop much experience with finer intricacies of money laundering and disguising cash trails, and you are no exception to that. Still you work should be enough to buy you a little time before the authorities come sniffing around, and the cash comes in helpful in the next stage of your plan. Warehouse space, vans, metalworking tools, and scrap all cost cash. By the time all was said and done you were out a few thousand bucks, but you had secured yourself a fairly complete setup to continue your work.

You are just walking away from overseeing the last delivery of scrap when your phone buzzes. It’s a mass-text from the university, advising students and teachers that classes were being suspended due to reports of a dangerous animal on the loose, and reassuring the student body that the authorities were getting involved to locate and capture the animal.

McCready’s Junkyard, Southaven - 1/3 BP

You make a run for it, barreling through the yard just as McCready pulls around the corner, the engine burning in your chest allowing you to move faster than you ever have before. There is the crack of a gunshot, and you can feel a slug clip your shoulder. There is a dull thudding pain feeling more like getting with a punch than a slug. However, the impact combined with your own inexperience with moving at this sort of speed, disrupts your balance and sends you sprawling. You crash into a junk pile, with a resounding thud of metal on metal. Just like with the bullet your metal skin and subdermal armor protect you from major injury, but out of the corner of your eye you can see McCready getting closer and lining up another shot. Your power might have saved you from a glancing hit, but you have no idea how it’ll stand up if he hits you center mass.

You haven’t suffered any damage yet.

You make some calls, it was something you’d done a million times before. Getting the stuff was easy, the more annoying thing would be keeping your parents in the dark. They had generally laid off your case since the incident, but if they thought you were using again all their concerns about pushing you too hard after your trauma might dry up, which while not life ending, would certainly require you find a new place to live.

A rented warehouse, 1/3 BP

The downside of being near Arcadia university was that there really wasn’t anywhere that could be reasonably considered nearby that would be remote enough that people wouldn’t notice excavation or mining activity. Especially since the university had a sub-surface imaging program, there were a good deal of seismometers in the area, enough to detect the vibrations given off by serious excavation, and the kind that might lead to local authorities wondering who was doing heavy excavations work without a permit. That was if the neighbors didn’t narc you out first.

No, if you wanted a sufficiently private location you would need to put a significant amount of distance between you and the university, someplace much more rural than your current suburban locale.

Meth Shack, 1/3 BP

Your captive rushes over towards his compaitraits, and after a few long seconds they do as they’re told.

They set up their equipment, and get to work. Mixing compounds is delicate work, even for as crude an operation as they were running, and being so frightened you can’t stop shaking doesn’t make for delicate work. Just from looking at them, you could tell whatever batch they were making was going to be garbage quality, but they were rushing through the process, cutting any corner they could. You were virtually certain that they were trying to be finished and gone as quickly as humanly possible. By the same token, you had a good idea that once they left with whatever garbage product they got from this cook, you would never see them again. There were enough secluded spots in the swamp or even out in the suburbs that they could continue their “careers” and never have to see this place again.

Gethsemane Global Operations HQ> Nystria

Like so many conflicts the civil war in Nystria was born from the ashes of the Great War when the Europan powers carved up the remains of defeated empires with no consideration to local wants and needs. Nystria was the runt of the litter, an afterthought with little in the way of strategic resources. It did not fare well in the interwar years, but things seemed to turn around slightly during the Silent War between Atlantica and the the Communist Federation. With investment flowing in things were better for a while, but after the Silent War ended with the collapse of the Federation, things fell apart quickly. The fall of communism left Nystria at the mercy of global finance, who sucked it dry. The state all but collapsed, and a civil war broke out between the small circle of elites and their associates and the army their ill-gotten gains could buy and the largely economically devastated rest of the populace. Currently, the battle lines were geographic with the oligarchs and their hired guns (apparently GGO was one of the few they hadn’t yet hired) controlled the capital and the east of the country, while the “rebels” controlled the largely rural and mountainous west. The rebels had numbers, but they were short on supplies, and even shorter on organization and leadership. However, they had apparently scraped up enough money to put out a modest contract for an “advisor” to assist in building up their forces.

Your trip to Nystria was fairly uneventful. You had to fly into one of the neighboring states and reach the headquarters of the rebels by truck. There, you were greeted by the rebel government, such as it was, and what little senior leadership they had left. It would appear that the government had been engaging in a fairly successful campaign of assassination which had left the rebels even more bereft of military leadership than usual.

Campus of Arcadia University

Getting from the university to the town in question ended up being quite a slog, especially when the highways took you through Empire City at the height of rush hour. All in all, you spent the better part of a day just driving into town, and the cost of gas ate up the pittance you had left over from your heist that hadn’t gone straight to your landlord.

The town itself was fairly unremarkable. Definitely it had seen better days, but it appeared to be surviving at the very least. Getting to the site itself would be far more annoying. It was on the property of some tech billionaire's summer house. He had been buying up local parcels to create some sort of summer home away from the plebs.

McCready’s Junkyard, Southaven 1/3 BP

You toss the battered remains of a car like a giant discus. It flies across the yard, as MacCready leaps out of the way. There is a great crash, and by the time the dust cleared you could see that MacCready had not been entirely successful in his attempt to escape. He was there, pinned under the car at the waist. His groans of pain and slow movement letting you know he was still alive, for now at least.

Outside of Convoy

It was fortunate that you had worn them down, peeled aside the doubters, those with anything to lose. For those who were here at this gathering were primed and ready for your message. They had nothing left, no purpose, and you were here offering them what they lacked. You set to work practicing as best you could trying to focus on various materials and see how they felt. You were making some progress, but the sensitive work was constantly being interrupted by the bustle of the science center as various kids and classes wandered around chattering and generally being a nuisance. Your choice of supplement while helping you tune out distractions, also made your headaches even worse. Still, by the end of the week you were starting to develop a sort of passive metal sense, even if telling the composition of various metals required a great deal of focus. However, your head felt like you were hung-over to the extreme, pounding pain making it hard to keep up the focus needed for your training.

You’re developing your powers, but due to the Adderall I’m tagging self-medicating[-2] as one of the side-effects of Adderall is headaches, which when combined with the side effects of your power is doubling up.

A rented warehouse, 1/3 BP

Taking your search outward to more rural areas proves fruitful. Several possible choices present themselves. There is decent site far out in the woods about two hours away from the university, some reports indicate some potential veins of precious metals in the area too deep to economically excavate and remote enough that you are unlikely to be discovered even if you are trespassing on state property. The downside is that the site itself is far off any road, making travel to and from the site rather troublesome. The second site on your list is an abandoned quarry about an hour and a half away. Rich in stone, and connected to the road system, it was abandoned when international granite prices fell. It’s easier to get to and rich in stone, but if market forces shift enough someone might come looking to check in on their old property. The last site was only about 45 minutes away and not far from a major highway, but the records you could find indicated the site was mineral poor, and so close to a major artery increased the chance of inadvertent discovery. Moving supplies, especially heavy or large items would be significantly easier though.

McCready’s Junkyard, Southaven 1/3 BP

You flee the scene, leaving McCready trapped. Getting away is not terribly difficult, though expelling the car you consumed was just as disorienting as the last time you had done it. When you get home and have a chance to examine your wound, you see the beginnings of a fairly bad bruise, but no external bleeding. All in all, you had every reason you had managed to make a clean getaway.

[/url]
Nystrian Badlands

The various rebels, a scraggly force barely fit to be called an insurgency much less an army, give you more than a bit of side-eye when you first arrive. A liberal dose of your power, and a few brutal demonstrations of your hand to hand prowess win over a small core of them. The rest are still dubious, a battle between their natural instinct to hang on your every word due to the effect of your power and years of traditions and social programming. Still, those willing to go along are more than enough to start with the training, and boy do they need it. These people were for the most part farmers with little to no combat experience. They know the basics of rifles in the hunting context, but downing a deer in the quiet of nature is hardly the same as shooting a man in the din and clamor of battle. You had to start with the basics of the basics, physical training, formation marching, and firearms training. For the most part the point was more to accustomize them to life as a soldier than to teach them anything specific, because until they had that, anything else you taught them would just fade away in the terror of battle once the fighting started.

You’ve gotten a core group of those particularly susceptible to your powers through the most basic of basic training. What you want to focus on next with them is up to you.

Meth Shack, Bayou North of Lavell 1/3 BP

You charge back the way you had fled the day before, heading back to the scene where your old life ended and your new life began. The passages of the sewer burned into your memory. You arrive rage still burning, but your animal instincts bring you to a stop, you can hear and smell people, lots of them in the labs you fled. They smelled like sweat, and gunpowder, and blood.

Mansion Outskirts

Shifting into wolf form you make your way onto the large stretch of land under the cover of darkness. Unfortunately, the notes on the location of the site had been vague, leaving you searching relatively blindly for the location of the dig. After a few hours, you think you spot something you recall from the notes on the dig, but then from the direction of the mansion at the center of the property, a bright light is turned on, aimed in your direction. The light momentarily blinds you, but you can smell and hear the sounds of a person.

Outside of Convoy

The next day you and your followers move to put your plan into motion. You use what little funds the cult has in order to buy up accelerants, and then they go out to prove their fate. Getting into the junkyard was more expensive than you expected, between making sure that the owner wouldn’t raise an eyebrow at any damage you might cause and to make sure you had the enough of it to yourself to practice in safety, you were out a cool $1,000 when all was said and done. Still, unlike the museum here it was quiet enough for you to actually focus. The opiates you dropped had helped calm your headaches for the most part, so there was nothing left to do but to get down to business.

It turned out, the sort of very fine manipulation you were attempting was damned hard. You had a pretty decent grip on moving regular sized objects, but the minute magnetic fields needed to turn a screw without turning the entire assembly it was connected to was a slow process requiring a great deal of concentration. It was a lot like what it must have been like when you were a toddler, learning to use your arms for the first time. Still, you knew that this wasn’t a skill you were going to develop on it’s own. It would take practice and lots of it to really be able to handle fine-scale manipulation quickly and easily.

Bigger stuff was easier, you could generally make decent sized fields in about the same range that you might be able to throw a baseball. However, unlike a baseball the magnetic field was the source of the movement, so if you threw down a really strong one you could launch something much farther, or try and pull something further away as well. Manipulating objects outside that range, however, was fairly crude, as you’d have to rely on strong fields which wouldn’t do subtle well and would affect anything closer to the field than your intended target much more strongly.

The afternoon went by quickly, and by the end you were exhausted and your headache was starting to come back, but you had a good idea about the current limits of your powers, and the basics for a training routine to help make develop your skill at using them.

Please be careful to avoid action stacking. I was lenient this time since it was relatively minor, but going forward I’ll just resolve whatever the first action is (in this case trying to get a good deal on the bribe) and just ignore the rest.

Lavell, underneath Lyman Pharmaceuticals Komodo Developmental Facility, 1/3 BP

It had only been two days since your rampage and escape, so there hadn’t been much time to repair any of the damage you’d done. That meant your original route out of the facility could be run in reverse, though the company would likely be watching that entrance. However, searching around, you didn’t really have much other choice, at least if you wanted to exit the sewer anywhere near the building. The nearest other option would be a manhole on the public street, which would mean coming up in a very public place followed by a long walk to get to the lab facility which was set back fairly far to keep it from the prying eyes of the neighbors.

From the smells, the street was fairly busy with the scent of gas you assumed to be cars, and various people smells. The lab still smelled of danger just as before.

McCready’s Junkyard, Southaven 1/3 BP

It was hard, but you managed to make it through the day without giving away that you could absorb physical objects. It wasn’t easy, as just as usual you were treated to an array of petty slights and annoyances from your co-workers and the people you worked for. An endless barrage of stupid questions with simple answers, combined with a nice dollop of rudeness from people who thought you were their servant to be ordered around wily nilly, not even worth pretending to respect. When taken with the knowledge you now had of what real power felt like, well it burned all the more. Still, you succeed in keeping hold of your temper for one day at least.

Enjoy your BP.

A rented warehouse, 0/3 BP

The AECU’s were an order of magnitude more complex than anything you had designed or built so far. You had the basic design down fairly quickly, but adding all the functionality you were hoping for while balancing the size and power consumption of the unit was far harder, not to mention that your lack of practical experience with excavation and construction meant there were likely bugs in their design you couldn’t foresee and that you’d only be able to discover as they were actually used. Still, despite eating up pretty much every resource you had left, you managed to get a half-dozen of the units up and running. That was the limit of what you could build for now with what you had in your workshop. Future units should hopefully be less resource intensive as you would no longer need to spend significant amounts of metal and magic prototyping and you could no doubt find more efficient means of construction now that you had the basic process down.

Temporary Base, Nystrian Badlands

You make some calls to a few logistics companies you’ve worked with before. They’re reliable but low key. After some heated rounds of negotiations, you finally manage to work out a contract for the delivery of pre-packaged rations and medical supplies to your base. It costs you a pretty penny, probably more than you’d have normally expected to make off of this contact, but it gives you a powerful bargaining chip. Now you have a not insubstantial private stockpile of food and medicine. How you want to distribute them is for you to decide.

No action stacking. You tried to do 3 different and unrelated actions, so I only resolved the first.

Convoy Fire Department

You storm the building. As you expected it was fairly deserted which made it easy prey for you for the most part. You started a number of isolated fires, but the building was more concrete than anything else, which wasn’t known for being overly flammable. Still, you manage to destroy whatever fuel and significant amounts of equipment that was left behind. Most of the staff had the good sense to run once it was clear that this was an attack and not an accident. Still, one of your cultists managed to capture one of the stragglers trying to save some personal effects when they had burned down the fire-station’s living areas. From what they were able to learn it appears that dispatch for EMS, Police, and Fire is all handled at the police station in the center of town.

Mansion Outskirts

You hide away in some underbrush, dancing away from the lights. As the man gets closer, you can make him out much more clearly. He appears to be a security guard, he’s holding a fairly powerful flashlight looking around. As he approaches, you can hear him speaking into his radio. “I’m out near motion 3, I don’t see anyone. Must’ve just been tripped by the local wildlife again. Over.”

The man is almost on top of you, though he seems to have missed you completely. You suspect that if you stay put, he’ll likely go back to where he came from after poking around a bit.

Junkyard, Kingvale

Your training regime really helps you develop some control over your powers, but it’s slowly tearing down your body and murdering your wallet. After two weeks of back and forth, you are left feeling extremely run down, the highs and lows of the adderall and opiates at war in your body. You are also starting to get some weird looks from the museum staff who are starting to recognize you, after all what adult comes visit the science museum multiple times a week. On top of the that, much of the take from your first robbery has been spent on transportation, tickets to the museum, and mostly on paying off the junkyard owner who has been getting more and more interested in just what you’re doing..

On the streets, Southaven 2/3 BP

You reach out and begin to absorb the car into yourself. Just like the night before, your body changes as the expensive machine is drawn in. Your skin once more becoming thick aluminum, though this time your entire form feels more aerodynamic, including a spoiler growing out of your back, your bones and muscles reinforced with steel. Just that felt leagues better than it had with the junker you had absorbed from the lot. However, that was the least of it. Last time you absorbed an engine you felt stronger, faster, just generally more powerful. What you experienced now blew the last time out of the water. This wasn’t some barely running piece of trash you had absorbed, this was top of the line, and the feeling of power, of speed, the feeling that you could do anything you loving wanted to was beyond merely intoxicating, it was life-changing.

A rented warehouse, 0/3 BP

The drive out in the van is long and boring, for the first part, and drat near impossible for the second. This vehicle was built for flat boring paved roads, not the sort of gravel or even dirt backroads you needed to traverse to get to the site you picked. The rented van struggled against this terrain valiantly, and only finally gave in and broke down just as you arrived as your destination. There really was nothing here, virgin wilderness on the back end of beyond. No one would ever find you out here unless they already knew where you were.

You set your golems working, and they begin the basic excavations of the site. It will take a while for them to carve out the first few rooms. In the meantime, you’re left with the broken down van and the question of what to do with the rooms when they’re constructed.

Temporary Base, Nystrian Badlands

It took awhile for the shipments of aid and supplies to make their way to you after you made the agreements. In the meantime, you took those willing to follow you and lead them through some fairly intensive training. You suspected that if not for your power more than a few wouldn’t have been able to hack it if not for your power driving them to the very limits of effort. It seemed that exposure was cumulative in its effect, because as your soldiers continued training, and thus exposure you noticed they were more and more sensitized to you. No doubt there was regular loyalty formation in play here as well, these were people learning real skills and gaining competence under your leadership, but you could tell from experience either your soldiers were all total pushovers or your powers were affecting the process.

Regardless of the reason, after a few weeks of hard training, you had a core of loyal soldiers trained in recon and some basic covert ops. Just in time for the arrival of the first crates of food and medical supplies. Which was good, because their volunteering to play guard is pretty much the only thing that keeps the desperately needed supplies from being stolen by the rest of the rebels the moment they arrive. Now you are faced with the question of whom to distribute them to and how to do it. For having control over something many people desperately need is potent leverage, and how you use it will no doubt shape how the rebels and the people of Nystria view you.

Mansion Outskirts

Thinking back to your research into the area before coming out, the best reason you can put together in convenience. There had been a nearby settlement, located where the town was now, and this spot was far enough away to be secluded, but close enough to be accessible. Still, with the guards’ interested temporarily assuaged you can continue your search.

Another hour of fumbling through underbrush finally yields paydirt, though not in the way you’d imagined. As you search around one particularly far-flung portion of the manor’s grounds you hear a cracking sound, then the ground gives way beneath and you fall down, landing with a painful thud onto stone below. By good fortune you manage to avoid breaking anything, but you’re going to have one hell of a bruise come morning.

Please don’t forget to include the location below your name block. This is the 2nd time I’ve had to re-add it. Next time you’ll eat a -2 penalty to your roll.

Lyman Pharmaceuticals Komodo Developmental Facility, Lavell, 1/3 BP

You burst through the hastily repaired hole you yourself had torn a few days earlier with a deafening crash. The two men who were chatting a few minutes before are frozen by shock. Enough time for you to get a look at them. These aren’t research scientists, most scientists you knew didn’t have kevlar jackets and submachine guns. Despite being clearly hired to guard this place, it was equally clear they had not actually expected a monstrous lizard-man to burst through the wall with no warning. You have a few meager moments of shock in which to act before they regain enough composure to do what they’ve been trained to do.

Convoy Fire Department

You rally your followers forward, leading them towards the center of town and the police station. It was a bold move, for you had little doubt the police would have access to to firearms and outside of yourself your followers had little in the way of arms outside the tools of arson they carried. Still, driven by your faith you lead them forward. Unlike the fire station, the police station was a hive of activity, and a crowd of mad arsonists did not go unnoticed. Soon you can make out a hastily assembled group of offices in mixed gear, joined a voice over a megaphone. “This is the Convoy Police Department, you are instructed to disburse at once or face arrest!”

R&R, Kingvale

You take a break from your training and go cold turkey on the harder stuff, though that is less soothing that you might hope. Even though you were only taking the drugs for a short period, you were still a recovering addict, and during your week off though you avoided outright withdrawal symptoms, you could feel the cravings start to kick in. Still, despite that, your R&R does help, slowly but surely the headaches diminish and you start to feel more energetic. You aren’t fully recovered, but you feel much better than you did before. When you count the cast, out of the $7,000 you originally lifted, only $2,000 remains.

Underneath Lyman Pharmaceuticals Komodo Developmental Facility, Lavell, 1/3 BP

You burst across the room, smashing into the closer of the two guards who goes flying across the room from the force of the impact, eventing landing on a counter with a sicking crack. Before the second guard even has a chance to respond you are upon him great knife-like fangs dig into his flesh and he screams in pain, dropping his gun as he goes into shock from the trauma. You can feel the blood gush, one of your fangs had hit an artery. Even if you don’t kill him immediately, he’ll be dead within a few minutes from the blood loss.

Novatech Corporate Campus, Southaven 3/3 BP

You make your way to Nova Tech, running down the roads at 60 mph, passing cars and attracting all sorts of attention. You make your way to the corporate campus, you know the route well. Before sits the office where you work every day. A sprawling concrete building, due to the sensitive nature of the work it’s fairly light on windows and other than the three main entrances each with a security checkpoint, the only thing at ground level is the occasional emergency egress door at regular intervals. You have little doubt you could force your way through the checkpoint at any of the entrances without much effort, they were designed to keep out protestors and corporate spies, not a super-human. However, it’d mean the cops would called right from the get go. It’d certainly be the easier and most straightforward way in though.

An important note about your powers, atm you can only absorb one thing at a time. Down the road, as your powers grow that number will increase. However, if you absorb something else in the building, there’s no guarantee increased strength and durability will be one of the properties it gives you, so be careful.

Out in the wilds, 0/3 BP

You set to work upgrading your rented van while your golems carve out the beginnings of a base. It was rough going, but after a few failed attempts you finally managed to configure the engine into a working prototype. Though it was definitely a prototype, finicky and prone to breakdowns. The actual enchantments were solid enough, it was the powersource that was the real problem child. Your understanding of aether extraction was still spotty at best, and as a result it was difficult to get the power tap to functioning consistently. Still, the equivalent of a perpetual motion machine that ran some of the time was a major step forward.

Temporary Base, Nystrian Badlands

You make excellent use of the supplies you purchased to barter meetings with important leaders. Your powers help, but unfortunately there is a large degree of animosity to cut through, so while this first introductory session helps blunt some of the negative feelings it will take much more work to win actual support. Your experience tells you that the existing power brokers within the rebellion are probably most likely to be resistant to your plans, the rank and file are set in their ways, but more likely to be vulnerable to your power. The two clearest paths forward seem to be focusing in on turning the leaders in hopes they bring their followers along, a smaller number of harder targets, or working around them, trying to steal their power bases from under them, which is a high risk strategy, but one that will put you in a much more secure position long term.

You open an account, the process is fairly straightforward only taking a few minutes of filling out forms, and you are out as quickly as you came in, a new debit card in your pocket, your preliminary reconnaissance a success.

Out in the wilds, 0/3 BP

To assemble devices such as you had planned would be no easy thing. After all, combined they would allow you to produce large quantities of highly exotic materials from nothing more than base elements you possessed in abundance. The magical forces involved in these sorts of alterations would be immense and fiendishly complex, at least if you wanted the level of efficiency where the devices would be usable. As you worked out what would be required, the list was frankly intimidating. A handful of large high clarity diamonds to serve as magic catalysts, a significant amount of gold, lead, bismuth, and various rare earth metals such as scandium, european, and neodymium. On top of that, you’d need a good quantity of cold iron to construct the housings for the various devices to prevent magical interference. All in all it was an expensive shopping list, a ballpark estimate put the full list in the $50,000,000+ range. Still, if you managed to get it up and running it’d completely transform your supply chain, eliminating the need to search out and find sources for significant amounts of rare and expensive materials for later projects.

Nystrian Badlands

You head out with about half of your troops, such as they were, looking for fallback positions. Southern Nystria is fairly mountainous, so your search reveals no shortage of usable caves, though at the moment none of them are particularly homey. Still in a pinch there are more than enough caves to run off and hide in until the heat blows over.

Lyman Pharmaceuticals Komodo Developmental Facility, Lavell, 1/3 BP

As you stalk through the building, you are struck by how earily quiet it is compared to what you remember. You can smell and hear other guards, but you manage to avoid them. They aren’t really trying to search for anything, mostly just guarding the entrances to various labs. Still, from what you’ve seen so far, and more from what you haven’t seen, it would appear that the Komodo labs have been mostly packed up, the guards here more to keep people from stealing anything yet to be moved than to prevent a superhuman attack.

Convoy Police Station

Whatever the cops on the barricade were expecting, it wasn’t a wall of flame rushing towards them. A few panicked and opened fire, bullets cutting down a few of your followers near you, but between your words and the supernatural flames you generated, your followers were driven into a frenzy and charged the police. A few more went down, but for most of the police, facing down a braying mob out for their blood and a supernatural fire witch was more than they could take and they ran. Those that remained, either brave or frozen in place in panic managed to take down another dozen of your followers before the crowd fell upon them ripping them to shreds. The station was yours, but it was clear word of what was happening had gotten out, for in the corner of your eye you can make out a news helicopter. There would be little doubt that in a matter of minutes you’d be nationwide news.

Nystrian Badlands - Outskirts of Civilizaion

Your scouting efforts are slow and grinding at first, turning up not much of anything and straining the men’s morale. Nevertheless it’s good practice, and that disappointment only makes the eventual discovery of a convoy moving towards the border that much sweeter. It’s fairly small and light, but looking at it through the binoculars a jolt goes through you. The guards are wearing the uniforms of the President’s Own. President Jimoza, the leader of the government isn’t stupid enough to come out under such light guard, even relying on often unused and empty roads. Still, that the president’s personal guard was present meant that whatever it was carrying was valuable indeed. However, it also meant that no bandit would be fool enough to raid it. If you attacked, there would be no disguising your involvement. However, by the same token, you’d be doing more to stick it to the central government than the rebels had in years, your cachet among the fighters in the badlands would go up considerably, assuming you succeeded and survived.

Back on Campus, 0/3 BP

Making you way back to campus is a start and stop process, the unreliable nature of your engine does not make for great highway driving, and you’re forced to pull over on a couple of occasions. There appears to be a great deal of fascination with something on the news, but it’s below your notice, your attention when not on the guts of your van or the road in on the pressing question of where to get your hands on a huge diamond.

You do a bit of research, and prospects aren’t good. A diamond of the size and clarity required for your device isn’t the sort of thing they have at your local jewelry store. Maybe you could find a stone in the Empire City diamond district or one of the major diamond markets in Europa. Heisting a multi-million dollar stone would be no small feat.

Lyman Pharmaceuticals Komodo Developmental Facility, Lavell 1/3 BP

You return the scene of your transformation, they haven’t bothered to clean up much, the entire lab is in ruins, though that turns to your advantage as you manage to recover a few more basic, less fragile tools. Proceeding outwards from there you manage to pick up a few things, but nothing too advanced or expensive. It would seem that the company was as money-focused as ever and had removed anything worth any serious cash priority one. Still, mostly through luck you manage to avoid anymore guards. You’ve probably gotten all you can in this area, though your haul is middling at best. Still, it’s better than nothing.

Enjoy your BP.

Basement & garage, Home, Kingvale

You set to work practicing the skills you’ll need for your heist. Each of the individual tasks are at root simple enough, for a given value of simple. The real rub will be doing them under pressure and all at once. Some of that merely comes down to practice, you can ease the cognitive strain in managing the bags if you can get it down to second nature, something you barely have to think about. It’s long boring work, but necessary. Though as they say, training is one thing, doing is another. Still, you feel like you’ve done about all you can without real experience when it comes to carrying and launching objects.

Novatech Corporate Campus, Southaven 3/3 BP

You crash through security checkpoint like a cannonball through a bag of feathers. This was designed to keep snoops out, you were a giant of man with metal skin, it doesn’t even slow you down. The guard manning the gate is thrown against the wall with a sickening crunch, but you keep on going not bothering to look back.

As you travel further inside, alarms start to blare throughout the building, the outer labs don’t have anything that particularly grabs your interest. However, you had heard rumors of a black project in one of the basement labs, its network was totally air gapped, and you had never been allowed anywhere near that part of the building. However, it’d be really going into the belly of the beast with no good way out except the way you came in.

You set your plan into motion, causing the blackout was one of the hardest things you’d ever had to do. You ended up creating a decent sized electromagnetic pulse, and it felt like someone jammed a spike into your skull when you did. Still, your training paid off and you were able to push through the pain. You make your way to the bank, caught in the blast radius of your pulse pretty much anything electronic inside was fried from alarms to cell phones. You make your way into the bank, its largely empty of customers and the staff are confused. You’ve created a veritably perfect setup for a robbery, there won’t be anything they can use to track you or call for assistance as its all fried. On top of that the cops are going to have to deal with the chaos your pulse has caused for what you’re best guess is at least a mile in all directions. Now all that remains is getting the money, and getting away.

Nystrian Badlands - Ambush Junction

You set your plan into action, your riflemen opening up on the convoy from range as the rest of your troops charge as planned. However, these vans are well armored enough that your opening salvo doesn’t really do much damage, and the drivers realizing they are under attack gun their engines as the guards start to fire into your positions.

If you don’t act quickly your raid will fall flat as your target gets away, this opportunity slipping between your fingers.

Novatech Corporate Campus, Southaven 2/3 BP

You bust your way into the cafeteria but find it mostly empty, it would seem that if there had been anyone there, the blaring alarm scared them off. If there was anyone with any real knowledge of the project left in the building the only place you could think of would be in the basement labs where the project was run, no doubt running to protect, or potentially destroy any sensitive equipment. The clock was ticking, if this project really was sensitive military tech, there was a very real chance they might just scuttle it if they realized it was your objective.

Ya, you rolled pretty poorly, but because of your BP I’m letting you know about the ticking clock.

Empire City, 0/3 BP

The trip to Empire City took a few hours, you set your drones to try and scout out the diamond district. Occupying a rather large building in downtown Empire City the security was more than respectable even in the portion open to the general public. You suppose it’s to be expected as tens of millions of dollars of products move even through those less secured areas. However, you couldn’t get much of a read on the vendor only areas or the truly high security storage areas where something like what you were looking for might be stored. You could only scope out where those place were, but not get really close. The place was a veritable fortress, loaded down with the sort of security potentially billions of dollars of hard assets would draw. Cameras, motion sensors, airtight vaults, sonic detectors, the best available on the civilian market and likely a few that weren’t. This would not be an easy smash and grab, managing a heist here would be the sort of stuff that’d make a normal thief a legend.

Think Bond movie or Ocean’s 11 like security.

Lyman Pharmaceuticals Komodo Developmental Facility, Lavell - 2/3 BP

You make your way out the same way you came in without further incident. Considering the corpses of the guards left behind there won’t be much room for doubt that something extraordinary had been in the lab, so a 2nd raid no doubt either be more fruitless, more difficult or both. Still, you managed to scrounge some equipment and supplies, though how much will be usable for you is an open question.

Making use of the confusion from the pulse, you make your way to the vault, with all the magnetic locks destroyed by the pulse, it was far easier than any planner might have expected, and you were through to the vault in a few minutes. Once you arrive, you reach out and force the bolts and locking mechanisms open. Inside are piles of bills, as well as safe deposit boxes. Considering the need to hurry, you focus solely on the bills. It was surprising how small they were, first $50,000 of stacked $20s barely filled up quarter the bag. After that you stopped counting, there wasn’t enough time to waste on that. It only took a few minutes, but soon you had emptied the place out and were on your way to the exit. Before anyone realizes what has happened you are out on the street, pushing a cart through the chaos stemming from the pulse. Before long you were away, though the question of where to go came to mind.

You make clean getaway, though you’ll need someplace to go and count/store your ill-gotten gains.

Novatech Corporate Campus, Southaven 2/3 BP

You start to make your way to the basement labs, smashing your way through locked doors, relying on the stairs to get you down there as the elevators had all been shut off. Barging through one door after another, it was clear the security here was heavy indeed. If you hadn’t been the equivalent of a human-sized tank you doubt you would have made it this far. Finally, after punching your way through a steel vault door you arrive at… You’re not actually sure what. It’s clearly an electronic device of some kind, but you can’t tell exactly what without examining it a lot more closely.

Nystrian Badlands - Ambush Junction

The men charged, already sensitized to your power from weeks of continuous exposure now you drive them into an absolute frenzy. All self-preservation instincts forgotten, they run right into incoming fire without flinching. Their gunfire was less effective than you had hoped, but the convoy was derailed when one of your men detenoated an old surplus grenade as he was run down by the lead vehicle. With the roadway blocked, the others are stuck in place, where the concentrated fire begins to wear on them, until finally any window not broken with concentrated fire is literally bludgeoned open with rifle buts. Any presidential guards still alive inside are dragged out and literally ripped limb from limb by your troops, you had ordered the guards be killed, and your troops would ensure there were no survivors.

Finally it is done, the convoy if yours, and not a single guard remains alive. You’ve lost two dozen men, about a third of your group, to do it.

Empire City, 0/3 BP

As you toy around with drone designs in your head, you realize what is required for your caper will need to be a cut above another you’ve made thus far. You’ll need them to do careful precision work, quickly and quietly, and the drone designs you have focused on thus far have generally been slower and clumsy. Higher quality drones will require higher quality materials. Nothing too outrageous, but better than the reclaimed scrap you’re used to working with. Which means you’ll need to secure some decent quality metals. With better materials, it should be relatively straightforward to create some prototypes for the designs your plan will need.

Bayou North of Lavell, 2/3 BP

You leave behind the proceeds of your raid, and start to make your way back towards the suburbs. It’s a bit of a trip on foot, as the shack is relatively remote, but you make your way out the swamp and into more populated areas. Unfortunately, the suburbs at dusk are full of people returning from work, from the very outskirts you can hear and smell the bustle of people and cars. It will be nearly impossible to complete your current plan without being spotted, likely multiple times. You are faced with a decision, proceed now or try and wait for things to calm down a bit, you imagine people will be less aware of the goings on in their yards once darkness has truly fallen.

Getting a motel room is easy enough, the scuzzy looking cleark seems skeptical at least until you put the money to cover the night on the counter. The room isn’t nice, but it’s private and enough for your purposes. Actually counting the cash proves more complex than you initially expected. It would seem without realizing it, your EMP had done you another favor, as mixed throughout the piles of bills are live dye-packs. If you hadn’t accidentally knocked out the broadcast device in the bank, your entire heist would have been for not. Even so, you take great care when removing the discarding the half-dozen dye packs.

Once that was taken care of, all that was left was the counting. Hundreds quickly became thousands, which soon became hundreds of thousands. Besides the sheer shock of being in the presence of that much cash, the think that most surprising was how small it was. $650,000 and it barely took up half the bed when you stacked the piles three deep. You weren’t quite a millionaire yet, but you had no doubt you could coast on this cash for quite a while indeed.

Novatech Corporate Campus, Southaven 0/3 BP

Letting go of the sports-car is painful, surrendering that power leaves you feeling so slow and weak in your merely human form. Still, you put the the thoughts out of your mind as you reach out for the unknown device in front of you in order to take into yourself. You have never absorbed something so large or delicate before. It is a wrenchingly painful experience as you can begin feel the changes come on. It is very different than the other things you have absorbed so far. It’s like ice climbing up your veins, and though unlike most others your skin and other exterior features don’t change you can feel your insides rearrange. The worst is when the sensation reaches your head, it’s like someone detonated a bomb right inside, it’s all you can do to cling to consciousness of the intense pain. After a five minutes that leaves you barely clinging to your sanity, the pain fades, and you feel differently than you ever have before. It’s like all your life before this moment you were living trapped in a thick fog. Everything is so intensely clear, thinking back it’s now obvious to you from the appearance of the machine that it must be some sort of prototype general quantum computer, just from the location of the various pieces you can begin to develop a general idea of its theoretical underpinnings. However, you realize there isn’t really time for that. From a long-ago half remembered meeting, you remember stated response time of the police, and you estimate that they likely have already arrived at the facility. From how long it took you to get down here, plus their necessarily slower and more cautous approach, you calculate you have approximately five minutes before a SWAT team breaches the room you currently occupy, and you no longer possess the super-human strength and durability necessary to repel them. Another option would need to be found.

As you’ve absorbed a highly secret cutting edge prototype quantum computer, your power is now Super-Intelligence[+4] as long as you have it absorbed.

Rather than breaking through the haze your troops are in, your orders instead seem to redirect it. Your people take to assessing their wounded and preparing to move out with the same single-minded focus as their earlier charge. Clearly this was as a result of your power, though what it was and what it meant was something you’d have to consider. However, those questions are quickly sidelined when they pull out the contents of the disabled trucks and you can see what this convoy is all about. Your troops open the first case, and everyone nearby gasps. Something finally makes a dent in the haze they’re under, though only a debt. A 2nd case is opened, then a third. All of them are full to bursting with bars of gold bullion. You can’t tell for sure the amount, but you can guess you’re looking at upwards of $150 million worth.

That dent in the haze over your troops keeps growing as the reality of what you’ve found begins to set in, greed starting to glint in their eyes. This is more money than you’ve ever seen in your life by an order of magnitude, for the starving farmers this is a virtually inconceivable amount of wealth, and you feel certain that if you don’t act quickly things are going to spiral out of control.

Bank, Kingvale

You make your way home with the proceeds of your crime to find your parent’s glued to the TV. To your surprise the news wasn’t focused on the several blocks wide blackout and bank robbery that must have been noticed by now. Rather, it would seem that there was some sort of ongoing terrorist attack in the midwest. Live footage showed a crowd charging a police station, with shots being fired. Then your parents and the newscasters gasp simultaneously as a woman in the mob shoots fire from her hands, the strange purple flames running along the ground to spell out a message.

REJOICE! THE PURIFYING FIRE IS NIGH! THE MACHINE CANNOT STOP IT! BE THE FLAME, OR BE THE KINDLE!

The attack on the police station continues, members of the mob being gunned down by the police’s weapons, but they charged on through the hail of bullets, their leader sending out gouts of flame, officers falling as they burn or being ripped apart by the braying mob. Clearly it would seem you are the not the only one with special abilities, and the cat was now officially out of the bag. This broadcast would send out shockwaves across the world, you could feel the tension in the air like it had been during the 10/12 terrorist attacks. You had no doubt all across the country if not the world people were watching this.

Empire City, 0/3 BP

You begin your search for material. The main impediment was going to be money no doubt, the higher quality the alchemical metal you wanted the more of the base metal the spells would need to consume. However, before your search can truly begin in earnest, it is interrupted. Everywhere you go, you can see people gathering around TVs. When you check your phone, you find out why. Apparently there was a major terrorist ongoing terrorist attack. Out in some town in the mid-west a mob of people had attacked a fire station and were even now charging a police station. Officers had opened fire with live ammunition. On it’s own this would be an electrifying story, but what took it to the next level was the footage of the the mob’s leader creating gouts of flame with her bare hands.

A livestream showed a burning message among the chaos.

REJOICE! THE PURIFYING FIRE IS NIGH! THE MACHINE CANNOT STOP IT! BE THE FLAME, OR BE THE KINDLE!

That seen was mixed with others of brutal violence and dead cultists and police officers. The whole world was transfixed, watching in horror and morbid fascination at the town of Convoy.

Convoy Police Station

You charge forward your followers running over the bodies of their fellows at the fortified police. There’s no doubt the beleaguered police likely would’ve been able to hold them back, were in not for your intervention. The first officer goes down in flames, screaming. Then the ammunition for his weapon cooks off, and the police position collapses. Your followers are on them, blood in their eyes. The officers who don’t make it back to the station are literally ripped to shreds. This was not like the movies, it made you realize just how fake those images had been. Men and women screaming, bleeding, and dying all around you, the scent of death only masked by the stronger smell of charred flesh and hair. Your group had won the battle, but in doing so might have lost the war. The police were now all inside the station, taking pot shots out the windows with no more hesitation about civilian casualties, and with this no doubt making international news, it was only a matter of time until heavier forces were mobilized, the kind your mob of fanatical but barely armed followers would be unable to even dent. Barring something drastic, your current position was untenable.

Enjoy your BP.

Decrepit Warehouse, Kingvale

The world of commercial real-estate is a very different business when you’re trying to lay low. However, there were enough warehouses in the area that it didn’t take too too long to find an illegal sublet paid in cash. It was a bit out of the way, but considering your intentions for the place that might be an advantage. The only real downside was that it was a decrepit warehouse, hardly a welcoming place, and at the moment outside of locks on the doors, the only real security was security by obscurity.

Nystrian Badlands - Ambush Junction> South Nystrian Cave System

You manage to keep things under control, though it’s clear to you that if your troops weren’t in whatever haze they were still mostly in you’d have been less successful. Still, your words reach them and you manage to get them to stay in line, at least for now. You take out a few of your troops, the ones that seem the most deeply hazed, and that had, looking back, been the core of your support from the very start of your time in this country. You lead them out a good distance from the ambush spot, and bury whatever you won’t be able to carry away. Then you try and make them forget, confuse their memories, make it so that they can’t return. They just look at you confused, though they’re fairly honest with you that whatever your trying isn’t working. Your first instinct then is to kill them, but the analytical part of you realizes that this would be doing you a great injury. Besides the fact that returning alone would have… unpredictable effects on the rest of your troops, who you are holding onto by a thread. It’d also be coring out your best base of support. These are the people most susceptible to your ability, and thus the most loyal. They’ve been invaluable in policing the rest of your troops, beating down any dissenters and generally doing a lot of heavy lifting in legitimizing your authority.

That being said, gold worth more than the combined income of everyone they would ever know was an almost irresistible temptation. Despite their loyalty, you were relatively certain that left to their own devices they would do a valiant job resisting that temptation, and then fail utterly. That left you the problem with what to do with them.

Ya, you’re power isn’t strong enough (yet) to just straight up rewrite their memories. However, that doesn't mean you have to kill them, as that would actually be pretty bad for you, as you’d be offing the core of your support among your troops. You’re going to need to come up with an alternate approach.

Novatech Corporate Campus, Southaven 0/3 BP

Making your way out of the building is easier than you expected. The police put up almost no resistance at all, at least not any that has any effect. It’s like playing a game against a child, you’re consistently not merely one or two, but ten steps ahead. You know where they’ll be before they do, and know where they’re not. Misdirection, if you could stoop to calling the sort of elementary distractions needed to mislead these fools misdirection was easy. You already knew a lot about the networks in the building, and so a few minutes on a cell phone was all you needed to have dozens of false alarms triggering throughout the building. With them, it was child’s play to make sure the SWAT teams were where you needed them to be to open holes in their encirclement. Combined with a short trip through the ventilation system, and you make it out without them ever realizing they’d been so masterfully had.
