Are the pumps rebuilt by indies just because that's cheaper, or because the pumps can't be obtained anymore?

Depending on where you route the fibre I imagine it would be just fine, or at least only become damaged when the chassis is so thoroughly intruded upon that it's a certainty the owner is killed anyway. I'd trust that more than a copper wire which (especially in Merc's case) is likely to be corroded after 20 years when the sixteenth owner careens it into a bridge abutment on his way home from the strip club.
