A contract signed by a minor is not binding!

Alice responds to the declaration of the raiders with a wagging finger and the beginning of a tedious explanation as to why they are wrong:

"Actually slavery has been illegal since the Convention of Nuln in 2312 outlawed all forms of non-recompensed indentured labor among humans, dwarves and halflings. Elves would have been included, but, haha, the drafters of the document presumed that no-one would bother to try and get any work out of an elf. Most Imperial states already banned the practice before then, but-"

But stops as Jakob pushes her into cover. It's clear the rough men approaching have no intention of adhering to the Nuln convention. Following Halfling instincts she scurries into cover, casts around for stones to throw, and waits for the men to close to within range.

Alice braces against the rock and finishes hauling back the string on this outlandishly huge human crossbow, drops a bolt in, then peeks round the corner at the oncoming slavers. With an undignified squeak she sweeps the crossbow up and lets fly - nailing the human's foot to the floor as her release is just a little early. She punches the air in victory before regaining her composure and getting back behind the rock.

Alice ducks back down behind the rock and strains mightily to re-cock the crossbow. In rapid Halfling patois she talks to Hepador and Jakob:

"Hep, help Jakob bring that bugger down! I'll take this shot then we can go bail out the bounty hunter."

Full action - reload.

Alice looks up from dropping a bolt in the groove on her bow to see the archers flanking her cover. She takes her time with this shot, breathing, squeezing the firing lever rather than jerking it, and it pays off. The bolt flies straight and true, punching into the cheek of the bandit. He might not be dead, but he's not happy!

"That one had some mustard on it, you creamy nonce!"

Rather than stick around to get perforated by return fire she puts some extra effort in and scurries around the rock to join Hepador in menacing the legs of the wavering slaver.

As the injured man retreats Alice tries to swipe at him with the butt of the crossbow but he's too careful. Keeping her head rather than chasing him down she moves up to join Jakob, drawing her sword (a cheap mass produced thing, purchased as a fashion item when she was a clerk in Talabheim) and transferring the bow to her offhand. It drags in the dust a little, but hopefully Jarla will forgive her. She makes a strike at the slaver, more to tie up his attention than in hope of actually hurting him:

As the white hot agony of the blow to her leg fogs her senses, Alice finds herself screaming - not in pain, but in primordial rage. She kicks her opponent in the shin, and when he leans forward to try and grab her up she shoves her blade up under his chin and into his brain. She pulls the sword free and is rewarded with a spray of blood to her face as the man topples. Somewhere a wolf howls approvingly.

She stands on his chest and yells out a challenge:

"I'm Alice McMeal, from Käfig und Fischer in Talabheim! I'll have any one of you bastards cares to come and try me!"

Wounds 2 / 8 | Fortune 1 / 3

Alice watches the bandits retreat with satisfaction, but as the din of battle, the pounding of her own heartbeat, and the rush of adrenaline fade away she becomes suddenly and painfully aware of her injured leg. It doesn't seem to be broken, although the force of the blow meant that if it had gone a little lower it could have ruined her knee. As it is she'll have bruise on her thigh that is going to make it hard to walk for a few days at least. She sits down, realizes she's sitting on a cooling corpse, jumps back up in horror and limps to the mule train to join the gathering. It's with a little distaste that she dons the ill-fitting leather jack, but clearly the majesty of Imperial Law is less protection than solid armor out here. The bow is received with better enthusiasm - keeping out of arms length has a whole new value to her.

Jarla posted:

"You've got a good arm, you ever thought about bounty hunting?"

Alice smiles weakly at Jarla's comment.

"Honestly, I think I got a bit carried away there. I'm more comfortable with the less physical end of things. Actually I've never, uh, killed anyone before now. Didn't even do my own slaughtering, there was always a butcher for that. I mean...they deserved it, I guess. Self defense, right?"

She shakes her head as if to clear out the sudden rush of guilt. She casts around for a new topic of conversation and finds one more comfortable.

"When we catch up with Kaspar I'm going to make him wish he'd stayed around to get killed with them. Breach on contact on Alice McMeal, will he? Oh, you better believe there will be damages paid. Punitive damages."

quote:

"So, where do you think we want to get headed after this?" Jakob ventured to the others as he prepared their meal.

Alice looks up from reading the map.

"Greasy Diggings is the closest town, if Kaspar told the truth. I think it's to our south, about 12 miles. We could make that today if we're lucky. If he's gone anywhere it's probably there, and if he hasn't we can at least sleep inside."

quote:

"I learned some tricks in the army, can take a gander at your scratches if you want. Uh, halflings and dwarves are like people, right? You're not like, made of stone or sumthin'? My gran always said so, but I think she were a little off in her old age."

"Being made of stone sounds pretty good about now, but no. We're flesh and blood. Don't know what you can do about this leg, I might need leeches."

She looks at the coin collection with Hepador but can't add any insight.

A contract signed by a minor is not binding!

Wounds 3 / 8 | Fortune 1 / 3

Alice is by equal measures gratified and confused to find this tiny enclave of her people. It's quite lovely, but it's...not what she would have expected in the borderlands. And definitely not within a couple of days march of a nest of brigands. If anything things seem a little too peaceful. She doesn't share her concerns with her comrades just yet - no point letting her suspicious lawyer's mind ruin a good thing. Again. She does jump in when Jakob is trading away the captured items to employ some of her skills:

"Jakob Surety, are you accepting retail price on that sale? For this I schelp my tuchis from Talabheim? You think you can just get clubs like this anywhere, you scoundrel of a merchant? This is combat tested hardwood, taken off a desperate warrior, and you complain about the stain?"

This carries on back and forth for a while, but the proprietor of the general goods store is no match for her

Fresh from that victory she bails up an old gaffer sitting on his porch to do the thing Halflings love most outside of eating: gossip.

After politely thanking the Gaffer for his time and beer, and assuring him that she was definitely not an Adventurer but an honest professional in reduced circumstances, Alice returns to the general store with a slightly shorter shopping list. She's able to secure a hat that fits over the leather skullcap but that remains fashionable and comfortable, and purchases both. Retiring to the inn she pays for common room accommodation and some pies, then sits with the party to chat about the day. Her memory returns to the earlier conversation about the founding of Middleshire and she tries to recall if the events he recalled about the Pie Queen fiasco were recorded by history. She also tries to keep her eyes open for any sign of the other travellers, but she's got a full belly and it's been a long day, so keeping her eyes open at all is a struggle.

Alice rubs her chin thoughtfully. There are a few different ways this could play out, and given the hospitality Middleshire has shown them she's reluctant to lead with spilling blood all over their nice clean floors.

"My preference would be to take 'em alive. A man like Kaspar survives on his reputation, which we can use to control him. We have hard evidence that he sold us out, but at the same time we escaped the ambush which is going to make 'Big Boss' suspicious. If we play our cards right Kaspar could be useful to us, although blackmail is a risky method to control someone. At the very least if you want to chop his head off we should have some sort of trial for the benefit of the town."

Pulling out her writing kit and book of laws Alice spends a moment preparing a document:

Alice nods sadly.

"Honestly? I doubt it. But if we have to fight them anyway 'I tried to enforce a legal writ' sounds a lot better than 'I murdered three men in their beds because they crossed me'. Maybe the brigands around here don't care about the law, but I do."

I'm afraid this man and his travelling companions are wanted criminals who have grievously wronged a number of people, including myself. A licensed bounty hunter and a properly deputized posse comitatus are arresting them to bring them to trial before the appropriate local authority, which I believe to be yourself and the council of Middleshire. Given the nature of the crimes they stand accused of we didn't want to risk them fleeing justice, but I assure you every effort has been made to ensure they are taken alive and unharmed."

Alice sits silently for an uncomfortably long period after being asked to throw her life on the line fighting bandits again. She thinks about refusing - her injured leg throbs painfully, and she's still finding dry blood in her hair from the man she killed - but then she looks around at the frightened faces of the halfling townsfolk, and her resolve hardens. Seven against an unknown but undoubtedly superior number of hardened killers? It'll make a magnificent story.

"Mr Mayor, we'll take the case. These thugs have been pushing people around for too long, and it's time someone stood up to them."

She stands up to make her point, and drinks the healing potion Jakob passes her.

"You say they plan on raiding you after the harvest? How long does that give us to get ready?"

It's been a long time since Alice did any farming of her own, and she's not sure how ripe those crops looked.

On the subject of the prisoners:

"By Imperial standards these men would be looking at long prison sentences of hard labor, potentially execution if the judge was feeling ornery. Helping bandits is considered the same as being a bandit, although usually harder to prove. Out here? It's the Mayors call. We probably don't want them running off to tell Big Boss that you've hired us, but you don't have a prison. Maybe you can keep them on as indentured workers for the harvest?"

She's too polite to suggest that killing the prisoners might be tactically advantageous, and not exactly murder if you squint right.

While the more martial types among her companions consider the physical defenses of Middleshire Alice sits down in the common room of the Merry Giant and makes a list. Lists are vital to the success of any enterprise more complicated than eating a pie, and it seems to her that driving away a bandit gang might fall in to that category. She's no general, but hopefully her legal training will allow her to strategize by analogy Her quill scratches away at the parchment as she adds sublists, assigns possible tasks to adventurers, and tries to squeeze as much activity as theoretically possible in to the next few weeks:
