This company came to my high school to do a presentation on meth back in 2007 or so.

Then they went to the girls school over the road and allegedly told them that meth would make them skinny.

We had a guy come to our school in 2002 or 2003, under what I can only assume was some kind of community service condition of a sentence. He'd go on and on about how P had ruined his life, caused him to steal from his friends and family, scratch huge holes into his arms, commit armed assaults, the works. The cop escorting him then says "So, why did you keep doing it, knowing you were doing these things?"

"Oh mate, once it hits you its so amazing, it feels like you can do anything and normal life just completely doesn't compare any lon-"

"Uhhh yes yes yes but it ruined your life and got you in trouble with the law, which was a bad thing, right?"

So glad Labour bent over backwards to get Willie Jackson on board. He and his mates make such a good impression, totally in line with the party's values.

https://thespinoff.co.nz/society/08-06-2018/alan-duff-threatens-violence-against-spinoff-cameraman-at-labour-event/

quote:

In the leadup to the event, held at the Birkenhead Brewing Company and hosted by senior Labour MP Willie Jackson, there had been disquiet from within the party about the controversial commentator [Alan Duff] appearing at a campaign event, according to one party member. The Once Were Warriors authors’ previous remarks about Muslims, Māori and women had even led to one member quitting the party, the source told the Spinoff.

Neither the Northcote Labour campaign coordinator nor the prime minister’s office responded to a request for comment.

During the event itself, Duff told the audience he had been “a National voter all my voting years” but had lost faith in the party and decided it was time to give Labour a chance. “There is no denying the Jacinda factor,” he said. “We all love a pretty young woman.”

Also, don't bother looking at the results for the Northcote by-election. The rich cunts in Northcote Point have continued to vote blue, despite the fact that the previous MP was a literal fraudster and crook who abandoned his post to run off and make money from the people he was funnelling money to before. Also the new National candidate purchased a $2m+ apartment in the area 6 weeks prior to the polls opening and claims to care about local issues, despite having never lived here.

Eh it's an OK result for Labour either way. Would've been nice to unseat national but it was never likely. National beat Labour in the Northcote party vote by 7% in the last election, which is the exact margin in this result. So if you adjust for the apparent blue bias of the electorate it'd indicate Labour and National are neck and neck nationally.

Looks like national has reached the final phase of a dying right wing party: having no message of it's own, it begins existing solely to be against what the other guy is for.

quote:

Simon Bridges is promising to undo much of what the Labour-NZ First Government is doing, should he become Prime Minister.

The National Party leader, currently the preferred Prime Minister of 9 percent of voters according to the latest Newshub-Reid Research poll, told The AM Show on Monday that would include rolling back fuel taxes, resuming the hunt for oil and dismantling the new Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.

And while we're here have Seymour twerking.

Okay well me being wrong in some limited situations doesn't change my overall point.
Simon Bridges can't undo anything, even if he was prime minister. No one can, they need the support of their party. So either the reporter is taking linguistical shortcuts, or Simon Bridges is an arrogant shithead. Either way, it's very misleading and dangerous to talk about one person having that sort of power when they don't. Often, those lies become the truth because people think "well the prime minister said I had to vote a certain way so I guess I have to".

Um you know that's kinda how our party politics works right? Like yes it's more complicated than just "what Bridges says, goes" but the parties basically fall in line behind the leaders because it looks bad for all of them if they don't. There are only a small handful of times where NZ politicians have crossed the floor.

I don't disagree with you at all, I worry because I think what you're describing in the bolded part is largely the norm now. A good chunk of the country think national won the election, most people think the economy is like a household budget etc etc and if national continue down the alternative facts road we'll be left with half the country being functionally retarded and no political discourse to speak of.

I don't know how to prevent that, I see people in the US threads grappling with the problem and all the solutions seem to involve time travel to the point before poo poo was hosed or communist overthrow now.

Yeah maybe I am too late - its already happened. I think its still worth pointing out. I don't recall during the election Jacinda Ardern saying "I'll do this, I'll do that" and same from Meteria or Shaw et al so I don' know if it is too late. Maybe its the right time to counter that narrative since our current government is a lot more blended than it has been previously - it might sink in.

She did this with abortion and marijuana.

And how do you think parties should announce policy? It seems logical for the leader to announce what they're planning, especially when the leader desperately needs more air time and relevance

Conscience votes are votes where you don't have to vote with your party, they're explicit exceptions to the normal party line ones.

Varkk
Apr 17, 2004

Normally any disagreements are aired in caucus behind closed doors. Then every one is expected to keep ranks in public. There are some exceptions for this, usually if the party is confident of the votes they will allow a member to go against them. This can be done to show them as ‘an independent thinker’ or similar as part of a play for electorate support. I think Damien O’Connor did it a couple of times last term.

I think parties should announce policy as a party. The party leader should say "we will do x", as opposed to "I will do x".

As for jacinda saying "I", welp, she is bad too I guess. I dunno. I don't really know what I'm talking about. I don't think we need leaders, or capatilism, or money for that matter....
