*Living not guaranteed Aurora Aurora is a freeware game produced by one programmer, Steve Walmsley, in his spare time. As anyone who's played Dwarf Fortress knows, this is a recipe for brilliance and eccentricity in equal measure. In fact, I think the Dwarf Fortress comparison works well here, because they have several similarities. Neither has graphics to speak of, and they're both extremely heavy on the details. More than that, though, I think they're similar because they're less games than they are story simulators; it's not really about winning or losing, but instead the game tells a story as it progresses. Aurora in particular tends to create stories similar to that you'd find in many SF books about space navies. If you've ever read any of the Honor Harrington books or similar works, you'll probably find Aurora quite familiar, with fleets of ships launching missiles at each other from long range and then closing to hammer each other with short range energy weapons. Something Awful has had some exemplary Aurora LPs in the past, but those are all either dead or slowed by real life so you get this one instead. Rather than trying to make a large scale game covering an entire interstellar civilization, I'm going to try something on a smaller scale. Fleets of goon lead warships fighting (and dying) in the cold depths of space, somewhat inspired by Yooper's excellent Strike Command LP. The story so far The advent of commercial space exploitation midway through the 21st century might have been a boon for humanity as a whole, but little benefit was seen by the common man. Seeing the opportunity to flee government regulation and oversight, the world's largest corporations moved offworld in great numbers. Mankind became divided into two groups; the great masses of humanity on old Earth, contending for the meagre resources that remained, and the "employees" of the deep space corporations, soon numbering in the millions, with access to great material wealth but only so long as their corporate overlords considered them cost effective. And so the situation might have remained, had it not been for the development of interstellar travel through the so called "Jump Points" some decades later. The first three spacegoing Megacorps to complete jump ships immediately laid claim to adjacent systems and began expanding, denying any others access to "their" systems. The remaining corporations quickly discovered, to their horror, that the Solar system contained only those three jump points. The Sol-bound corporations vastly outnumbered the interstellar ones, and things seemed destined to end in violence, but none could reach an agreement about working together. All were opposed to any other corporation exclusively claiming the only ways out of Sol, but none were willing to waste their precious profits building fleets of warships if the gains they made would be split with their competitors. The squabbling seemed destined to go on and on, until a few corporations almost belatedly remembered the planet - and governments - they'd left behind. The Interstellar Space Access and Enforcement Treaty was carefully drafted by the regulation-averse corporations to do exactly what they wanted and no more. A Terran Space Navy would be formed, overseen by representatives from Earth's governments, funded by a small fee on all spacegoing vessels, and used to maintain every human being's right of free access to the wealth of other star systems - and absolutely nothing else. What happened on the colonies, bases, and ships of the various corporations was left entirely up to them. The Terran Space Navy In the end, violence was averted entirely - the three interstellar corporations decided their current claims, located in valuable systems close to Earth, were worth more than trying to fight for the hope of exclusive control. The closest the Terran Space Navy has seen to true warfare are wargames and occasional combat against lightly armed pirates (usually funded by competing corporations). More often, they function as a search and rescue operation for malfunctioning and out of fuel ships that just happens to use armed vessels. To the nations of Earth, the navy is a status symbol, a fig leaf that lets them claim their authority extends to the stars. To the interstellar corporations, they're a minor but annoying drain on resources, only worth keeping around because they trust their competitors even less than they trust the navy. But to the men and women of the fleet, they're also an opportunity to escape the poverty of the resource scrapped homeworld (or the cutthroat pragmatism of corporate employment). Goon Participation In the grand tradition of Aurora LPs, feel free to sign up with a captain and a ship name. I'll add you to the list, and then put you in game when a ship is available. If your ship is blown up and you manage to get rescued, you'll be back soon with a new command; die, and you'll have to sign up with a new captain. Additionally, when a decision needs to be made in combat(Probably at the start of missions and when anything surprising happens) I'll put it to a vote; anyone is welcome to participate in those votes whether or not they're currently commanding a ship. Mission 1 Approximately one week ago, the Exxon survey ship Ptolemy missed its scheduled check in. Once it became clear it was more than just a forgetful captain, they relayed the situation to the TSN and requested ships be dispatched to check on the situation. Overdue survey ships are not unheard of - it could be something as simple as a failure of their portal stabilizer, but pirates and claim jumpers are also not unknown. The 6th Destroyer Squadron and 11th Frigate Squadron are the nearest available fleet units, and are hereby ordered to rendezvous at the Tau Ceti system and investigate the last position of the Ptolemy, in a system that Exxon has notified us they have named Hector in honor of the newborn son of a board member. This apparently left them feeling more charitable than normal, as they also sent along a copy of the Ptolemy's last survey reports, though of course scrubbed of any economically useful data. The Hector-A system is fairly unremarkable - seven planets, several dozen moons, and around fifty major asteroids. Hector-B and Hector-C are in distant orbits, beyond the ranges of most ships under conventional drive, and are not expected to be relevant to your mission. The situation in Tau Ceti is quiet - a distant frontier system, the only other human presence is a pair of civilian asteroid miners hoping to hit a motherlode in the system's large asteroid belt. When queried, they mention it's been quiet, with no other ships sighted since the Ptolemy jumped back into Hector. Though they are both quick to note that they don't possess military grade sensors. Primary Objective: Determine what happened to the Survey Ship Ptolemy Bonus Objective: Get within 200,000 km of the Ptolemy to conduct a visual inspection. Command Directive: Per standing order 57, when entering an unknown and potentially hostile system, at least one jump ship and one combat ship must remain on the jump point in order to report back in case of incident. The non-combat collier ships will also be left behind in the Tau Ceti system until Hector is deemed secure; fuel is not expected to be an issue due to the small size of the theater. 6th Destroyer Squadron 11th Frigate Squadron code:
The Peregrine is specially constructed to hide from enemy passive sensors; it uses special "baffled" engines that are very difficult to detect on thermal sensors, and mounts heavier armor instead of defensive screens with their distinctive energy signatures. Despite these modifications, it is as visible on active sensors as any other frigate, so it is limited in its ability to hide if the enemy doesn't care about stealth. code:
When they do find themselves in a major fleet action, they generally leave fighting larger enemies to their more capable allies, and use their high speed and low visibility to disengage if threatened. Because of their small size and the ability of their Artemis missiles to engage all manner of targets, they're also sometimes assigned to minesweeping duty. code:
Although conventional doctrine calls for light vessels to avoid close range combat with larger ships, the Horatius is intended as an exception, especially in packs. Its small size grants it a speed and stealth advantage that it can use to ambush isolated warships and attempt to cripple them quickly with its spinal laser. In theory, at least - attempts to test this in Navy wargames frequently end with dead destroyers. But the sheer firepower of the ship (and the visual spectacle created by live fire exercises) means it remains popular both with commanders and crews. code:
In wargames the Nasu no Yoichi class is frequently used in a skirmisher and scout role, often getting into missile range of an opponent undetected before turning on its powerful sensor, emptying its magazines, and attempting to retreat back into stealth. code:
Even so, the generator is so large the Leonidas can carry nothing else other than thick armor and a few basic combat systems. Nevertheless, it must be protected at any cost; if a fleet loses all of its jump ships, it will be trapped in the current system until reinforcements arrive, unable to even get a message out. NewMars posted:So can we get an explanation of ranks and ship classes? Hopefully the most recent post helps with the ship classes. As far as ranks, they're similar to naval ranks on Earth but a bit inflated, because the TSN doesn't have very many capital ships but wants to make room for a lot of Earth brass due to political reasons. Commanders are the lowest command rank, and command frigates and auxiliary craft (I haven't put anyone on the colliers because then they would spend most of the time Captains command destroyers (in addition to serving on but not commanding larger ships; someone has to keep the admirals out of trouble). Commodores are the next rank up, and generally command cruisers but also jump destroyers, since the commander of a jump destroyer is also the leader of its squadron. Rear Admirals command the big ships like battlecruisers and battleships, as well as jump cruisers. The fleet's single Command Ship is run by an Admiral. And lastly there's a Fleet Admiral, but it's a desk job in the Sol system. NewMars posted:Okay, so how much latitude do we have in issuing directives and mission planning? I didn't bring up orders yet because anything that got decided now might become immediately outdated when you jump into the system, but in general you have complete discretion when it comes to orders. I'll probably do a thread vote for major decisions, and just go with acclamation for minor stuff. Here's a quick rundown of mission briefings: Primary Objective is what you're trying to accomplish. Failing it is probably going to be bad. Bonus Objectives are things you can accomplish that will probably get you a bonus later. More ships, or a better situation in the next mission are both likely. Command Directives are orders from higher up the TSN hierarchy. You don't have to follow them, but you'll probably get in trouble if you don't (especially if it backfires). Corporate Directives are demands/special restrictions from the various Megacorps; there aren't any this mission. They don't, strictly speaking, get to tell you what to do, but they can make your life hell. Think X-Com Apocalypse.

Update One of the worst positions in space warfare is a blind jump into a hostile situation. Even though the odds that enemies are waiting is considered low, the fleet is on high alert with shields at full as they make the jump into Hector. They come out widely separated, but fortunately it soon becomes clear no one is shooting at them. The two squadrons set course back to the jump point as soon as their systems recover from the transit. Scanning the system, it seems finding the Ptolemy won't be a problem; sensor technicians on the Manatee are quick to locate a cloud of wreckage matching the size of a Newton class survey ship in a small asteroid field. It could be that this whole situation was caused by a careless captain flying into an asteroid, but the lack of any lifepod beacons is troubling. Planning I know we have some Aurora pros around, so I'm going to take a page from the Strike Command LP and invite everyone to submit plans. Once there are a few offered, I'll hold a vote. Feel free to make the plan as in depth as you like, but simple is fine too. You have a stealth scout ship if you want to use it, or you can just send everything in active sensors blazing. However, keep in mind you should leave at least one jump ship and one combat ship (anything besides the scout or other jump ship) on the jump point if you want to follow the orders from HQ.

Captain Cryo of the Inside Context Problems are Still Difficult reporting for duty I'll take anything with a gun, that I definitely won't take and turn pirate with as soon as I can. Maybe a Peregrine. Those look easy to hide, which is a quality that I care about solely because it makes it good at scouting and has nothing to do with lurking in asteroid belts looking to smack prospectors over the head and steal their lunch money. Midshipensign-Leftenant (Naval) Kobold switches on the briefing room's Plan A: Plan A was to be at home enjoying quality time (and a nice beer) with the wife and kids. That is clearly not happening and contingency plan "Wake Up" has failed, so we go to... Plan B: Concept: Minimum Required Effort Resources Allocated: FF This Side Up, SF Manatee Main Objective: Search & Rescue - This Side Up will locate & rescue survivors Secondary Objective: Incident Analysis - This Side Up will locate & retrieve data pertaining to cause of shipwreck Secondary Objective: Risk Management - Manatee will provide sensor coverage & overwatch. Serpentis, if you fly into a rock then the whole fleet will see it live. Quick Rundown: 1. FF This Side Up approaches debris field with active sensors. SF Manatee trails a fair distance behind running silent. 2. This Side Up attempts to locate any escape pods and survivors. If present, retrieve and render any necessary aid. 3. This Side Up attempts to locate and retrieve the ship's log, black box, and any other data. An EVA party will be necessary. 4. SF Manatee provides overwatch & observation with passive sensors. In the unlikely event that something happens to This Side Up, the Manatee will summon reinforcements and render assistance if possible. Plan Modifications: If necessary, an additional frigate may be dispatched alongside This Side Up to assist in recovery efforts. Eighty two Spacepoint™ slides (and far too much free* clip art) later, Midshipensign-Leftenant (Naval) Kobold summarizes the entirely necessary presentation with a few words.
