Ginette Reno posted:It's kinda interesting how Letang scoring that OT goal in game 3 vs the Caps in the 09 playoffs arguably spurred the Pens towards a Cup and denied the Caps one and now here we are in 2018 and he paid it back by giving up the goal in game 5 which gave the Caps confidence they could actually beat the dumb flightless bird team. I completely forgot that the Capitals were an OT away from taking a 3-0 lead in that series. For whatever reason I remember the Penguins comfortably beating Washington in both Games 3 and 4. I remember Malkin's OT goal off of Poti's stick in Game 5 though. That was some bullshit.

The only guy I really feel bad for is Nate Schmidt since he rules and it wasn't his choice to leave DC. Also he was there firsthand to experience the Caps winning. Alzner was in DC for a while but I don't feel bad for him because he said part of the reason he signed in Montreal was because he thought he had a better chance to win the Cup there (lol).

Yeah I don't really care that Alzner left to get more money. But if he's going to say Montreal is a better destination then I hope he realized that he didn't contribute jack poo poo to Washington to help them.

The Caps are going to open the checkbook for Carlson and dump Orpik and/or Burakovsky to make it work. Grubauer is also going to be traded so they should get a little more cap relief with his replacement who is likely to be a league-minimum journeyman or Pheonix Copley if they promote from within. Edit: VVV Yeah I really don't see Carlson getting $10 million anywhere. I think he'll end up getting $8.5M to $9M. Mind_Taker fucked around with this message at 16:26 on Jun 15, 2018 |

Jamwad Hilder posted:The Caps are also probably going to overpay Tom Wilson this summer. I'd like them to keep DSP too. Add in a Carlson contract and, even with the cap going up by 6 mil, you're eating up runway pretty fast with guys like Vrana and Burakovsky due for new contracts next summer. DSP is awesome and he should get a statue outside of the arena but I can't help but feel this postseason was just a huge flash-in-the-pan and that the Capitals should cash in on trading him somewhere else. (Vancouver!)

Gunjin posted:DSP gonna get paid, and I don't think by Washington. Grubauer is going to get dealt, maybe bundled with Orpik to get that off the cap. Carlson, a lot depends on the cap increase, I think on the open market he can pull more than Washington is comfortable paying, it'd suck to lose him but I don't think he's worth what he's going to get. Losing a top D is always a concern, but at least Washington has Johansen, Bowey, and Siegenthaler close to ready. Beagle is gonna get overpaid by somebody, and it isn't going to be the Caps. Wilson is going to get a bump, probably more than he's worth but nothing crazy. I really hope the Caps re-sign Kempny, but I've legitimately got no idea what he's going to pull on the market, he went from Chicago benching himevery night almost causing him to go back to Europe to playing top line on the Stanley Cup winner over the course of a couple of months. I don't think any of those dudes can come close to replacing Carlson. Johansen and Siegenthaler are left-handed (and neither are really projected to be dynamic D-men) and Bowey seemed way over his head this season and I'm not really convinced he is going to amount to anything. If they can't sign Carlson they really should be looking to trade for Erik Karlsson or something while their window is still open.

Bad teams should sign decent players like Vanek, Kovalchuk, or Green to flip at the trade deadline. It was funny when they ended up not trading Green but he was injured so it makes sense now.

Reirden is almost certainly getting promoted and it'll be quick. They've been grooming him for a while and it'll help make the transition rather smooth so that Carlson isn't tempted to go elsewhere due to coaching instability.

lol Ottawa. If I'm analyzing this correctly Ottawa either: a. Didn't even talk to Florida about Hoffman. b. Accepted a lesser return from San Jose because they just wanted the coveted "higher cap hit than actual salary" dude in Boedker.

Listened to a few podcasts on the subject and did a little thought myself and I think Trotz resigning is probably the best for all parties. Trotz wanted a 5 year deal worth $5 million a year, a perfectly reasonable request from a guy with a good regular season track record and now a Cup winner. So when the Capitals wouldn't give that to him I understand him wanting the move on. But I also understand the Capitals saying no to Trotz's demands and trying to enforce the 2-year contract extension Trotz signed. The Capitals core players are all getting up there in age (minus Kuznetsov) and at some point they are going to need to transition to their youthful players and start a mini rebuild. For as good as Trotz did this postseason he still has trouble developing youthful players. Burakovsky has hit a wall and it's not all due to injuries IMO. Trotz benched Vrana off and on despite playing well and only played him in the top 6 when he was forced to do so with the Burakovsky injury and Wilson suspension. Trotz was reluctant to play Djoos despite him clearly being a better option than Orpik in most situations. Washington already has Reirden who is familiar with the team so the transition should be relatively smooth. And there are also some rumors that Reirden may have been behind some of the structural changes to Washington's defense that made them go from bleeding scoring chances against to being one of the more stingy defensive teams in the postseason. Cartoon Man posted:Tortz’s final numbers with the Caps. drat it’s impressive when you actually look at it... Yeah he was an excellent regular season coach and a crappy playoff coach until this year when we got bizarro Trotz.

They need a goalie and they need Tavares to re-sign but a lot of the Islanders issues last year were caused by Weight being a bad coach. I bet Trotz leads them to a wild card or something.

Re: DSP They probably didn’t qualify him because they were afraid an arbitrator would heavily weigh his playoff production and give an award the Capitals wouldn’t be happy with. And since teams can’t walk away from awards less than $4 million (which DSP would have come under for sure), the Capitals would have been stuck with him at a price they wouldn’t like. However they are still negotiating with him as a UFA and want to bring him back at a more reasonable price. He might take more money from another team which is fine, but I kind of understand Washington not wanting to pay him like $2.5M or whatever an arbitrator night award him. They did a similar thing with Brett Connolly last year.
