I think the pattern of 'inject ads everywhere to solve problems we created' is not a good long term plan and a quick look at Windows market share of desktop OSes shows why. Charge for a license, make a product that people want to use and then solve REAL problems. That's a slower burn for the quarterly reports, but it's not one where you are actively burning up good will and positive mind share while you slowly bleed out from the bottom. I strongly believe that microsoft is selling client licenses when they would happily give them away only due to antitrust reasons. If they cared that much about windows licenses, they would have done anything to stifle the volume license resale flows.

No household without children or manchildren will consider acceptable building a desktop instead of buying one prebuilt or most likely a low end laptop.

Sure, the phone is more generally useful these days and I didn't say otherwise. I don't think that the cost of phones has much if anything to do with why desktops are declining in popularity, though. I also think that a desktop is likely to last longer for most folks, both due to the support lifecycles involved and the greater hazards that mobile devices get exposed to, and how long the device lasts is as relevant to its potential value as the initial cost is.

Yeah I just mentioned cost as a point of emphasis but my main takeaway was that there is a lot of overlap between what you can use a cellphone and a desktop computer for. More and more people can live off of their phones and have less of a need or dependency on a desktop (or laptop even), so they aren't going to buy one.

Nobody else sells operating systems. And anyways, they pretty much do give it away these days. You can install windows without a license and use it forever with no real limitations, and their free upgrade policies for 10 and 11 were very generous. If I had 11 I could be using the same "digital entitlement" as I had for 10, which was originally a 7 key. Haven't paid for a new windows key in a loooong time. But they're never gonna give up the OEM Windows tax and make windows really free. It's a lot of money. All the above free upgrades and not chasing after grey market volume keys is because they made the decision that it was better to be lax about that stuff. Because outdated and pirated copies of windows were a big security problem. It was costing them way more to deal with botnets of XP machines than they could ever hope to recoup in sales. (Though with the 11 upgrade requirements it might return, maybe they've forgotten this lesson.)

If your budget is that thin then you probably aren't buying a new phone either unless your old one gets lost or stolen, and you certainly aren't shelling out $1000 for an iPhone 15 Pro or whatever the hell like in the original example. On the other hand, if your budget is at a point that you are even remotely contemplating such a purchase, a modest desktop which will last 5+ years with minor if any updates is absolutely not going to be inconceivable. The reason such a person would not buy a desktop is that they do not want a desktop. Eletriarnation fucked around with this message at 19:59 on Aug 2, 2024 |

The one time I show her SA, and she clicks to some random thread where someone had decided to go out in a blaze of glory and spam post endless close-up pics of vaginas. YouTube Reddit seems to think they’re accounts going live with an ungodly amount of tags that basically hit everyone’s feed because they’re casting such a wide net I love that YouTube can’t recognize a video with 50,000 tags as being not legit but they can recognize 0.2 seconds of copyrighted music in the middle of an earthquake.

I feel like one of the biggest perks of having a PC for gaming is that you can ignore new AAA games entirely and still have a library a mile deep. Not only do you have all of the older and indie games available on Steam, GOG, etc., but you also have a prime platform for emulators. The gulf between old console and modern desktop performance is so large that you can basically assume anything with a remotely good and recent CPU and GPU will run rings around PS2 and older platforms, and PS3/Wii U/Switch are definitely viable these days. It's really this that has caused me to continue keeping a good desktop for my whole life while I've lost interest in stationary console systems. The PC allows me to keep up with current games if I buy a new GPU every 2-5 years, but whether I do or not it still offers the option of virtually every game I've ever played or been interested in previously. That's setting aside all of the non-game functionality, which is obviously in a different league from any console.

That dual screen with a touch screen causes all sorts of issues when trying to play it on "normal" hardware. You run into problems where you don't have a touch screen (and the mouse is a terrible alternative) or you don't have the screen real estate for the dual screens or there is no convenient way to actually hold your system when trying to play games that use both buttons and the touch screen.

(Yeah some of this is just where we are in the cycle, particularly the switch is tailing off because everybody already has one. "Gaming PC" is such a broad term as to be basically meaningless in terms of capabilities though. That could mean a 14900K/4090 or a R5 5600/1660S that solely exists to play Fortnite, Valorant or Siege.

If I had a switch and it existed solely to play BOTW and TOTK, is is not a switch anymore? Is Fortnite not a game? Anyways I'm sure "gaming PC" is a pretty artificial category with arbitrary criteria that varies between the companies selling them. But it also doesn't include whatever number of the 200 million other PCs sold in 2023 that are playing Fortnite, Valorant or Siege.

While that doesn't mean they get used for gaming, there are for sure plenty of PCs from the "home office" category that have games played on them. But with reliable estimates that the PS5 was outselling both xboxes by 3:1, it seems like MS would have needed an awfully good year to make up the gap.
