Maybe this is in the weeds but how did Sony outsell MS this generation? I feel like the two consoles are more similar to eachother than they’ve ever been and people were going to buy the same brand of console for backwards compatibility and existing friends-list networks. My anecdotal experience is that everyone has a XSX/XSS and only one guy I know has a PS5. You could cop a XSS for $300 and instantly have a huge library off games for the cost of a Denny’s dinner before the drink.

I say this as a retired Sony fanboy who’s last console was the PS3, but what in the world happened?

My guess would be exclusives like Last of Us (got a massive boost after the show aired), Spider-Man, God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn. Granted all of those also came to the PC eventually, but were Playstation only for a year or two.

All the big Xbox franchises either withered on the vine (Halo, Gears) or were successful but never reached the cultural saturation point to sell consoles en masse (Forza, Sea of Thieves)

The XSX is a good console but not a particularly exciting one in the way that the PS5 is to most people

The joke, but not completely a joke, answer is, Phil loving Harrison happened. The guy who masterminded Sony's 2006 presence, and would later go on to mastermind Google Stadia, was running the Xbox show in 2013.

The more generally helpful answer is: Microsoft incredibly shat the bed with the Xbox One and Sony completely ate their lunch, causing a wave of ship-jumping. The thing about the Xbox One was, aside from the continuous memes about having the wrong ram and being called the Xbox One, was that the said bed-making GBS threads happened right as people were just starting to get entrenched in platforms with vast libraries of digital purchases as well as friend lists and achievements and all that poo poo. So when Microsoft put in a herculean effort to unfuck themselves with the Xbox One X, which by all accounts was poised to deliver more than the PS4 Pro could, it was too late and everyone who jumped ship to Sony was there for the long haul. The Xboxes Series being pretty good on paper doesn't really help anyone at this point.

Some other wacky bed-making GBS threads has been going on at Microsoft lately as well, but that's all what'll gently caress them over next gen.

Also: the Xbox Series S thing may have backfired somewhat. It seems to have kind of stalled a lot of developers who report being hamstrung by having to make games that must potentially run on an S. It might also be confusing a lot of parents but who the hell knows what the end result of that is. Meanwhile, a PS5 is a PS5.

Microsoft’s naming conventions have done them zero good. The third Xbox being the Xbox One, the mid-gen refreshes each having a similar sounding letter at the end [Ess and Ecks]. The current gen follow-ups being the Xbox Series [????] with the same Ess and Ecks problem. And while it’s true that both Sony and Microsoft’s consoles are wanting for games in many respects, the PS5 does at least have timed exclusives while the Xbox gets to share its exclusives with PC. So if I want to play Starfield on day one I don’t need to buy an Xbox, I can just use my PC. Meanwhile if I want to play Final Fantasy 16 a year after release I need to get a PS5 unless I’m okay with waiting a still indefinite period of time for it to come to PC.

And like was said a PlayStation is a PlayStation the PS4 Pro was the only version so far had a performance difference in the same generation.

Bitter and Sarcastic

For some more context on this video, he starts by talking about how his sister died suddenly, then … uh … segues … into talking about how on top of all that, his janky pool-cooled home server rack failed due to chemistry.

And hey, if he wants to deal with his grief by diving in to a project, that’s cool, but maybe he should break it into two videos so that his clickbait “I inevitably hosed up my indulgent DIY” bullshit video title doesn’t immediately precede mentioning his sister’s death.

LGA is bulletproof to remove and change CPUs unless you are actively being an idiot about it

PGAs like AM4 are the risky ones where you can accidentally rip the CPU out of the socket and damaging the fragile pins while removing the HSF

They are saying there is no point to remove the CPU because Intel keeps changing the sockets. Not that the CPU or socket would break.

For a solid while people were almost suggesting to remove intel sockets and just solder the CPU, since once installed it would never leave.

He had (or almost had?) a heart attack a few years back and it got him on the weight loss path, but yeah he does seem much skinnier than even recently.

Yeah I'm not worried about removing LGA CPUs or anything, its just a funny observation because of how frequently Intel dumps a socket. Part of the reason I waited until AM5 to switch to AMD was because I didn't want to deal with a PGA socket

Stuff like this makes me feel like I'm from an alternate universe. Haven't we collectively learned not to click on links in emails yet? I know grandma will click whatever, but how come IT-facing workers aren't just told "If you click links in any email you didn't immediately request, you're fired" or something. I know that's extreme, but I'm just confused by this sort of thing.

Genuinely, though, what are some things that are actually important enough to have a link to in an email?

- User registration
- ... ?

I must be blanking, but what am I missing? I know I'm paranoid about everything due to being in IT my whole life, but I'm almost surprised email providers haven't started stripping link tags from emails by default.
