I think the first time I heard about LTT on these forums, it was described as Top Gear but with computers. It's a very accurate description: ambitious but rubbish.

Linus just did a video on affordable VR and never mentioned that you can get a Windows MR headset for like $150 vs $400 for the Rift. Because it's a sponsored video by Oculus lol.

...And? It was made clear the whole time that the video was sponsored and while it didn’t tread any new ground it’s always nice to point out that VR doesn’t actually take a computer that costs a ton. The affordable part was the machine not the headset.

The video is called "Can you Game in VR on a Budget?" so someone looking to game in VR on a budget would benefit from knowing about this option, which I'm quite certain would've been mentioned if it weren't for the sponsorship. The sponsorship itself is clearly disclosed thankfully but that wouldn't help someone who's not already closely following this stuff. What I'm saying is it's about ethics in tech "journalism" :v:

I also cant remember the last time I watched a video over 30 minutes long and I don't think I have ever watched a live stream. I don't want to watch someone fumble along trying to build something, I want the cliff notes "here is what I made, here is what I tried and why the super easy fast method fails".

I simply cant convince myself to watch Chris Barnett's videos, for one I just don't really care a lot about SBCs, but his style is just too dry, I want to see videos that are more hands on and less talking. I don't mind some dry videos so long as it's still a little hands on and about an interesting topic, like Engineerguy's video on pop cans. Engineerguy later went on to do a 13 part series on candles and well, holy poo poo. On the one hand I'm intrigued and want to know what every last molecule is doing when my candle burns but it's still just a candle.

Have you seen Project Binky https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NX4lBvHDMs8
I mean cars are tech stuff after all. I'm pretty sure every video is over 30 minutes long but in no way could you describe what they're doing as fumbling.

Engineerguy's soda can video is amazing. It's perfectly presented and really eye-opening to see how much thought, skill and technology goes into even such a simple object that we don't think about at all.

For some more dry tech stuff, Computerphile has some interesting CS related videos. Most are probably not a big revelation to anyone who studied the subject or even self-taught hacks such as myself, but even then it can be quite fascinating as he often has has guest old-school professors or Brian loving Kernighan on.

Get refurbished HM or Steelcase chairs from liquidators. They'll be around or even below the cost of the gaming :rice: nonsense, will easily outlast them, and help maintain good posture. Plus most are available in mesh versions to keep your goon assess cool.

I watched the GN video this morning after waking up way too early for some reason. As Steve said, the blindfold tests are fun but not really meaningful. IMO there are a few things to keep in mind:
  • People are different so if someone says they don't find a chair comfortable, it doesn't mean you won't either
  • There are tons of adjustments so you need to find the best one, the initial impression might not really representative
  • What might feel comfortable initially, won't necessarily be after 8 hours, or be good for your posture long-term
  • The height and shape of your table, the position of the keyboard and monitors also play a huge role
  • I find the headrest to be also very important especially if I'm reclining a lot

I got a Steelcase Think earlier this year when it became clear we'll be WFH for the foreseeable future. It took me a week or maybe two to find the settings that work for me, and now I really like it. I might try replacing it with a Leap V2 if they show up, but I haven't seen them locally yet.

___

tangentially: one thing I've never quite seen anyone recommend in "how to build" videos is to have a checklist

the second-to-the-last time I tore down my computer to clean it, I completely forgot to reattach the CPU fan to the cooler/fins, and I only realized this when I'd already built everything back up, so I was so obstinate about not wanting to tear it down again I spent the next 20 minutes trying to reattach the fan and plug it in with everything else already inside the case, which was really difficult because one side of the cooler was right up against the top of the case and there was barely any clearance for my fingers to push the CPU brackets around the fins. It probably would have been faster to take it down/out, but I was too hard-headed

so the last time I did another tear down, this time to install a new CPU, I wrote down the order of the parts as I removed them:

and when I was putting it back together, I went from bottom-to-top, checking it off as I went along, to make sure I didn't forget anything

Whoa that's way too organized for me, just add/remove parts until it works as it's supposed to
