People always gonna hate on Linus and tbh a lot of their criticism is justified. He's a young, impetuous and imperfect person lacking in appropriate guidance for his station. I think he's alright relative to his peers. In a world where people actively install terrible people into positions of power, getting breathless over YouTube personalities seems trivial. And I can always do a chargeback on my backpack and feel no guilt, so gently caress it all I guess? Pontificating about the warranty seems like more of a talking point for people who haven't or weren't going to buy it.

The Grumbles posted:What substantive details do you think are missing? He mainly reviews phones and lifestyle gadgets. I don’t see how benchmarking and the like is useful in those contexts. The substantive details missing from most reviews are what it's like to daily drive something for any meaningful period of time, but that's not an issue specific to Marques as was alluded to earlier with the car reviews comment. Their problem is that they need the video to be relevant at a specific point in time, meaning they can't use a multitude of devices for months on end and still have them be relevant enough to monetise them. If I'm in the market to buy anything, my first Google isn't for YouTubers but either subreddits or support forums.

I think we all know interpersonal relationships aren't prescriptive, but sometimes it's just easier to not do things for people you just know are going to be a pain in the rear end and do them for the people you know will generally be good. I tend to think that after a single bad experience we mostly have that poo poo figured out for future reference.

forest spirit posted:I wonder how expensive that spinoff was, does anyone have any educated guesses for youtube studios? They're all incredibly unique and I'm shooting in the dark Pretty sure LTT pay retail for all Apple products they use simply because they aren't an approved media outlet. The knock on effect is that their coverage comes out later than approved outlets who get earlier access and benefit from more reviews during the initial hype. Apple content that is time sensitive, like new product releases, just isn't that big of a money spinner for LMG so it's understandable they don't prioritise that kind of content if they can let Alex spend $100 at Home Depot to jank the poo poo out of some hardware they already have.

TheFluff posted:Danish company Asetek holds US patent 8245764 as well as a bunch of other patents that basically covers most elements of AIO liquid cooler design. Most of this is probably unenforceable because it's too trivial, but Asetek is highly litigious and have won lawsuits specifically related to the pump-in-block claim before, earning them royalties on a bunch of AIO's made by other companies. More recently however they lost a patent infringement case against CoolerMaster in the EU a couple of years ago, in part due to prior art and in part due to the claims being too trivial. This ruling was upheld in the Supreme Court of the Netherlands in December 2020, which also resolved a couple of other related EU lawsuits against other companies that were waiting for the higher court to come to a decision in this case. Immediately prior to that, in November 2020, Asetek were threatening Arctic with a patent infringement lawsuit for basically the same thing, but their loss in the NL court probably made them drop that threat (I don't think Arctic circumvented the patents at all, really). This is actually really interesting to me because the first AIO cooler I became aware of and actually bought was a CoolIT that had a very basic LCD screen on the pump/CPU block combo back in maybe 2006 or 2007? This was around the time that AIO water coolers were becoming a thing.

Belated LTT backpack review now that I have carted it half way across the world: I got a $60 refund because if you have even the vaguest acquaintance with the channel you know that they are not going to be able to do taxes competently. It's definitely a tech dork backpack for people who are resigned to a lifetime of emptying their entire loving backpack at the TSA 'how are we going to pointlessly gently caress you around today' show, but it's very comfortable, very sturdy and I'm confident my laptop, tablet, camera, lens, etc is absolutely safe.

I remember back when I lived in the sticks, HughesNet (forgot the former name) was $70 in 2006 money, had ridiculous data caps and I’d get latencies of 600-800ms when trying to play online games. It's fine. My connection is pretty stable at 60ms to EU servers from the UK playing online FPS games. You do get the occasional spike in latency or a few seconds of packet loss but imo it's worth it to have a 300mbps connection instead of a 20mbps connection with 20ms latency. Compared to everything I've read about traditional satellite services, Starlink/LEO is very good.

I wonder if it's one of those regional linguistic things. I've seen people eat probes on these forums where the rap sheet entry is something like "posting oval office in a non-antipodean thread" which is just as hard R.
