I like Linus's "TechQuickie" videos because they're pretty loving simple explanations about standards and poo poo that I use everyday but chalk up to magic, like PCI-E, USB, etc. I absolutely can not stand his main channel and that's because he's so heavily involved with Intel that I think it handcuffs his ability to tell them off at a time when they desperately need it.

I watch another channel sometimes called TechSource which is basically a dude investing his wealth in computer aesthetics judging people's computer rooms (fortunately he never calls them "battlestations" which is the worst loving aauuugh). I started watching Setup Wars because an IKEA opened in my city and it's basically like IKEA Pornography for people who spend a lot of time at a keyboard.

I wish people building machines talked about why they use the parts they used. Watching Jay and some Mac guy build a PC for video editing work is fine, but they’re putting a 1080ti in there and it’s not even clear whether they need it for that job or that the building newbie is aware of how overkill it is (they don’t, as evidenced by mounting it vertically against tempered glass to choke for air.)

Edit:Apparently it was free from EVGA so that’s why. Wish he had said that up front at the start.

While an Apple fan, he does manage to have very thoughtful views and clearly puts a great deal of effort into writing his script. Which is pretty rare on Youtube. He also actually does meaningful research. Which is nice.

Rene Ritchee has been doing vlogs and regular appears among Leo Laporte's circle of crusty old 486-era tech mans when they discuss Apple. (I have old 90s issues of InfoWORLD with stories about NeXT and SPARC so I kid with respect but cmon).

On the subject of Apple videos, if you'd like Apple opinions and occasional throwbacks with a healthy dose of cynicism I enjoy Snazzy Labs. If you're into iOS, 91Tech is a guy who does a video or two a week about the value of old iDevices and whether you should buy/sell, he's pretty quiet and monotone and the videos are polished.

I would hesitate to suggest Simple Alpaca because he raises all the flags of a rich kid whose family owns the entire Apple consumer line and is trying to spin that into cash back by producing several videos a day comparing every iPhone ever made against one another twice a year and floating rumor bubbles. This is definitely a quantity over quality approach that will absolutely grate on some people's nerves, however he does very non-scientific tests between all the toys that he owns so if you're really curious how much faster an iPhone 8 can load the News app over an iPhone 7 after some minor bugfix OS update, there you are.

There's a perfectly serviceable option called bcache on Linux. It does in particular what he's wishing for in regards to new incoming data. But I guess that wouldn't make much of a video.

Based on his Lutris video, I think he wants to keep the fashionably 90s "Linux = Hacking Tool" naivete. It's weird because he's not so atrociously dumb that he couldn't pick it up, he just chooses to keep his head immersed in the Wintel world. Possibly because, like a lot of voices of experience about hardware, he sees everything's peak potential as being "for gamers" and doesn't care to learn a drat thing about the enterprise environment his businesses nonetheless has to adopt to work properly.

Linus just seems like the kind of guy who would use a 2080ti and a motherboard with "Gamers Rise UP" emblazoned in RGB to run a simple database server. It works only because his audience is predominately people more impressed by gaming FPS charts than any other sort of benchmark.

Tech Deals is like the infomercial that's on when you turn the hotel TV on at 2AM in some southern city. It's got that budget "filmed in an office, not a studio" look that makes it amusing/entertaining in this dreaded "your boy comin back atcha" era of YouTube. Except unlike the infomercial he is arguably useful buying advice.

That was just a year in review gripe. What a bore.

I was excited to see how hot the 10900K would get in that case with a dozen fans and no airflow.

Also weird to see goons defending the flaming of that Verge video. Anybody failing a True Verified Geek test on The Verge or it's network of affiliated sites gets hounded to death by 4chan & Friends because angry reactionary men on the internet hate that the editors of that blog network have a culture war opinion about diversity being good and aren't afraid to say so. It's just an echo of the exact same poo poo we saw over Polygon videos of Dean Takahashi playing Cuphead poorly and still getting poo poo for it years later.

I would also put it down to Youtubers' fear of ever being labelled "political" by the algorithm, see also times when GN Steve does an aside about never saying whether or not crypto mining is a bad thing.

I think it's more the audience than the algorithm. Many popular YouTubers in the Linux world go hard on right-wing politics, one even posted his video of attending a Trump rally in the middle of the pandemic. I would say most of those people, even ones I drop for their politics, would support right to repair as a liberty that comes with putting up the cash for purchase. But there's people looking to organize boycotts all over politics, it's just that opensource evangelism is so predominantly white and male that it's no surprise when chuds emerge and there's a strong desire to not lose allies or their knowledge when they do. (It should be noted that actual FOSS projects and organizations are taking a much better ethos on that, creating codes of conduct that is pushing the disgruntled chud factor to the commentator/influencer part of the community, which is part of why this phenomenon occurs.)

To be honest, Linus putting "right to repair" in the spectrum of comerce/communism seems like a bit much. And of course, Linus had his "MONEY!!!!1" video the other month so why would anyone rush to call him a pinko. He's probably reading something he wrote off the cuff, but it's more about anarchy versus just about anything else in the consumer protections space.
