Linus managed to find a YouTuber even dumber and cringier than himself to do a collaboration with, which resulted in the fire department being called after they set off a smoke grenade: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCZWT0BLqAA In cringe-free news, vintage technology YouTuber CuriousMarc has completed a full restoration of his vintage 1950s Teletype. Recently Linus uploaded a video where he built a computer with a custom water cooling loop using copper pipes. He said something along the lines of "we've done everything except copper" and a lot of the comments were along the lines of "what about the whole-room water cooling"? This intrigued me, "an idea so bad that even Linus wants to forget he ever had it?" so I looked up the videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8bLtg9J1Oc Don't miss the bit at 30 seconds into the video where Linus is standing on a 2nd floor windowsill next to an open window while using a rolling office chair as a brace to hold his balance. There's 7 videos total available in a convenient playlist. Spoilers: nothing goes right, and the whole thing turns out to be pointless since they end up moving out of that building within a few months of doing all this work.

Linus wasn't the only prominent Techtuber to have repair issues with the iMac Pro. Snazzy Labs had an issue where the official VESA mount kit broke the mounting bracket on his system and when the Apple store tried to fix it they mangled the stand and mount even worse. In the end Apple replaced his whole computer but it took him posting a video about the issue for that to happen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MG_NRcy5mxU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OceuTkSYNo Maybe the issue isn't the users here...

Gamers Nexus just released a review of the Vortex "4D environment simulator", which is a weird gimmick device that will make for a good episode of LGR Oddware in 20 years: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0Q285Cp8nE The device and the video itself is not particularly interesting, however what is interesting is to contrast their video with the Linus Tech Tips video on the same device: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aULhzn37DE You can see how Gamers Nexus did actual measurements and tore the device down to see how it worked on a hardware level, and showed how the software used the video and audio from your computer to (attempt to) generate the appropriate effect with specific examples that highlight the failings of the device whereas Linus just played a few random games and said it sucked. Now, it's pretty obvious the device is terrible but these videos really highlight the contrast between the styles of the two channels where GN does a lot more research and objective measurement and Linus just YOLOs it. (Also I just realized that LTT has nearly 9.4 MILLION subscribers whereas GN has less than 1/10th that at only 680 thousand )

They've done a bit with it, but not a lot. In fact, in their latest "crazy custom server" video they outsourced the manufacturing of the server case to a third party at four-figure expense. EDIT: If you want to see industrial manufacturing equipment used properly in a crazy project, check out the Wintergaten channel. They're a band that had a viral video a few years ago with a complex machine that could play music. It, of course, only barely worked and the video was only possible through the magic of editing, but the video was so successful they've been trying to build a reliable version of the machine they can play in concerts for the past 2 years. Here's a playlist with all the (weekly) videos, and here is the latest one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgM2ruB8M34 Mr.Radar fucked around with this message at 18:03 on Oct 23, 2019 |

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AItTqnTsVjA I generally appreciate Ross Scott's opinions on video games (even if I don't always agree with them), and Freeman's Mind is a classic of 2010s Internet comedy, but any time he tries to talk about non-video game stuff he really... shouldn't. Watch for an hour as a guy who runs LiteStep ITYOOL 2020 rant about how all GUIs suck (despite admittedly only using Windows 7 for the past decade and not having tried a Mac in "years" and not really trying Linux for any extended period either)! He does make a few good points but, as a YouTube commenter points out, "I mean you're not wrong but you're right for the wrong reasons and it makes me feel bad". Linus Tech Tips is fixing their off-site backup server after literal years of neglect: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eS4bNKLxEL0 Note that during the time they've been without an off-site backup they've had their server room catch fire due to a faulty/improperly installed UPS and also did a major remodel of their office (which definitely brings no increased chances of major disasters to their building). Also note that this "new" backup server is so old that it had OCZ SSDs installed as the boot drive. Also also note that Linus pretty much straight-up says he's managed to piss off all his sponsors for server-grade hardware (so they won't send him any more freebies for a while) which is why he's deploying such an ancient server for this purpose. Combat Pretzel posted:Was it the constant dropping and breaking of hardware? Probably a bit of that and a bit of asking for a bit too much stuff recently. I remember a different storage server video he did a few months ago where he asked Seagate for a bunch of drives, they sent him drives rated for at most 5 per chassis, then he told them it was for a huge NAS and they sent him drives rated for like 12 per chassis and he had to go back to them again to clarify he was putting all like 40 drives he was asking them for into the same chassis before they sent him drives certified for that type of duty. For some reason Seagate didn't ask him to send the other drives back (that's almost certainly where the initial Ironwolf drives he was going to use in this video came from) but I got the impression from the video that Seagate was done with sending him drives for a while.

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with using an old server for this purpose, it's just a bit strange that he went out of his way to call out that he wasn't using brand new hardware like he normally does with server builds.
