Also, the stuff that is out is unobtanium (Ryzen 5000 has been out 4 months and is only now regularly staying in stock at MSRP and GPUs (both current- and last(!)-gen) are still only available at stratospheric pricing) so there's less demand for reviews to decide what to buy because the average consumer just can't buy stuff right now.

Linus Tech Tips did another insanely expensive and pointless project, this time an Xbox controller made of solid gold (which is so fragile it can only be handled with cloth gloves):

Between this and buying $50k of GameStop stock it's a wonder Linus's wife hasn't divorced him yet.

I like how they pointed out in the video that their results aren't even valid because they were basically just adding fresh (cold) tap water every minute or so such that the performance of the radiator didn't really matter.

I think the rumor was entirely down to him announcing he was leaving Anandtech within like a day of Linus announcing he was creating LTT Labs to do more scientific/analytical reporting compared to their usual fare. I think on the WAN Show right after that he said he'd love to have Ian at LTT Labs but he didn't think he could afford him and/or provide enough material that would be interesting to him.

ssshit what are the other youtuber threads, I only know of RLM and I don't go there. So are they entertaining dumpster fires?

As mentioned the other big one is the one in RGD which mostly focuses on media critics and lefty video essayists. It regularly has multi-page derails, most frequently about Star Wars, Zack Snyder, and anime, which can on occasion be entertaining but are mostly tedious. I'd say it's at least worth a skim to check out what videos are being posted, even if you ignore all the discussion inbetween.

C-SPAM also used to have a Youtube thread but it became too much of a cesspit even by the standards of the C-SPAM mods so they shut it down and told everyone to go post in the RGD thread instead :v:.

Edit: I also just remembered there's one in YOSPOS as well, though it's pretty low-traffic.

The 8-Bit Guy failed to repair a CRT driver board and had to ask Adrian to help him. Normally I wouldn't give 8BG too much poo poo over it since 8BG is clearly not any kind of electronics expert, but the main problem with the board was that 8BG put a replacement chip in backwards even after his brother warned him to double-check the orientation as he was doing it which is just

No, that's way out of character for WAN Show chat. Usually they're decently engaged with whatever topic Luke and Linus are talking about, and Linus brings up points raised in the chat. Linus was also really pointedly ignoring their paid "merch messages" (superchats that don't give YouTube a cut) until the very end of the show whereas he normally also answers a few inbetween main topics.

Weirdly, that's the reason LTT launched their Mac Address channel with its own host. Linus identified that there was a gap in the market of Apple device coverage for someone who wasn't dependent on Apple sending them review samples and Mac Address was the result. Of course, it's still not as in-depth or journalistic as Gamers Nexus but it does seem to be better than most Apple-focused media.

EDIT: On the WAN Show after it launched, someone asked if he'd do a similar Linux channel and basically said there's no money in catering to Linux nerds. :v: (Not in those words, of course.)

On the WAN Show, Linus just announced he's planning to launch a Spanish version of the channel. That wouldn't be too unusual, but they are LTT so of course they're doing it differently: they plan to use machine learning to transcribe their videos, machine translate the transcription, and then synthesize a new voiceover. He gave a quick demo and it was pretty dire, especially the voiceover. The chat was practically begging Linus to just use subtitles instead.

So apparently Twitch streamer Asmongold and a bunch of others got together and started a PC building company with the former staff of Artisian Builds. Linus Tech Tips did a video review of one of their more expensive systems and then Asmongold did a live reaction to Linus's video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPrJKQ2HH28

(He plays Linus's video in its entirety, including the sponsor segments.) It has some pretty funny moments, including how mad he gets at Linus dunking on the company's logo (which, Linus's puerile humor aside, is terrible because I assumed it was supposed to be an Atari 2600-style joystick and not a hammer, which is what Asmongold insists it's supposed to be).

I'm just watching the WAN show in background, the piece about Youtube's 4K premium poo poo, and they mention that Youtube was running an experiment by resetting people's playback settings to some lower resolution, checking to see how long it took to react, if at all.

I had this poo poo happen to me frequently over a certain timespan, and it was pissing me off royally. I should have known it was one of their loving experiments. Let me opt out of this poo poo.

The same thing happened to me too! Another time I was also in a different "experiment" as well which broke the Transcript feature on Firefox (it worked in a private browsing tab and when logged out and I verified I was being delivered different JS bundles between logged in and not). In that case, after I used the "Send Feedback" option to report the bug they reverted me to the default player.

They didn't even really patch it, either. They just rereleased the same broken version once the controversy had died down. Fortunately a community member figured out the issue and wrote their own patch. It turned out that either they had no texture caching or it was completely broken, and shimming a cache in plus a few other tweaks pretty much fixed the issue.
