Carlos Ezquerra deserves some props as well, he's been drawing Mega-Cities since the 70s folks. That said, I don't think this game's city looks as complex and towering as these vintage comics we're referencing here. And it has a lot of Los Angeles to it and whatnot.

Yes, because you still only :airquote: needed :airquote: to update every 4-6 years if you wanted to keep pace. Granted, if you wanted to go max-graphics and max-resolution, you'd be buying a new video card every 12-18 months, but they also maxxed out at $350-$450 back then. The payoff was constant upgrades to gaming engines, with developers introducing new techniques and adding features every few months. Now, we're lucky to get a DirectX update once a decade.
:smith:

Even in recent years, you usually want to upgrade your video card every few years, at least if you went mid-grade. I got a 560ti in 2012, that wasn't running games like XCom2 very well just a few years later. I was often going for the PS4 version of a game around 2015 or so, MGSV etc, so for me these direct comparisons of hardware seem tricky. And stuff like RDR2 looks so good, I can't see my 2012 PC being able to handle that for example. My 970 is holding up okay after three years at least, but it's also the most I've spent on a card at $300-ish.

Those early days of hardware innovations were cool, I had the ol' Voodoo3 mentioned earlier. But even with the current slower pace, I still would like the pace of PC gaming upgrades to be even slower. Plus with the talk of how feasible AAA development is, the rise of indie games etc, we can make a lot of great games without that much more horsepower. We've reached a spot where it might make sense to upgrade hardware less often for several reasons, cutting back how many years it takes to produce a AAA game, expectations for graphics, more money for people to spend on games, etc.

Well the problem with setting realistic expectations is that there’s always gonna be some rear end in a top hat that ruins it for everyone. The Rockstars of the world that decide that 100 hour work weeks and years of development time are fine and then get rewarded for it with universal praise and game of the year awards across the board. It would be better for everyone to lower the bar for graphical fidelity but big companies are incentivized by the market to always push the limits.

True, at least there seems to be some traction to games like the Yakuza series catching on, with lower detail. "AA" games they sometimes call these mid-budget titles. So indeed, I wouldn't mind a PS5 hitting and PC specs raising for higher framerate and flexibility, and either way it'll take understanding from the consumers for lower detail games to coexist. On the crunch thing and working conditions, that's a bigger topic, it seems that's around in all corners of the industry. It's good the Rockstar quote got people talking, but I don't get the impression they're much worse than most.

I'm 45 hours into Witcher 3, level 10, getting the Griffin gear. Anyways, games are huge. I'll probably get to hour 100 when Cyberpunk takes over the universe in two months.

Longest games I've played are Skyrim and Breath of the Wild at 250 hours or so. I'm good with shorter, especially since shorter will still probably be really long anyway. More important to me is how diverse and interesting those hours are. I'm pretty much bored with grinding for ingredients in games and crafting, random ramble here. I think Night City is dystopian chic enough that I won't be picking up a bunch of plants and poo poo. (You got beast dung!)

I don't want to farm literally or figuratively. I saw that trailer for Rune Factory 5 that lauds the farm life. It's just not for me, bring on that night city life.

In general, I could do with just a light grind in RPGs now. Imagine going through Breath of the Wild or Witcher 3 without grinding for some armor or whatever. It would be good. Part of it is how optional it feels is personal, for me I always figure I need to do a bunch of that to be on spec for the quests. Just keep the armor as a quest reward, let me never have a sack full of 200 ingredients ever again. Max Payne never grinded for his cool clothes, and he's an RPG (really pimp guy).

In this off topic ramble about crafting, does Cyberpunk do that sort of thing? Are there a bunch of knickknacks I find in the trash that I craft into an expanded battery or whatever? I hope not, but I'd put up with it out of respect if so.

Long story short, I demand thrills and I have picked up enough craftable knickknacks and stuff for 100 lifetimes. But I will do what Cyberpunk tells me.

My computer is below the minimum specs, I've got an i5-2500k you see, and a 970. So not sure if I'll try it on that or on PS4. I'll play it on something, that's for sure, and if it looks like a 1999 game all the better. I'd just like at least an N64 framerate.

The underclasses rooting through the trash the upper classes have consumed and disposed of in favour of next years model is pretty thematically integral to cyberpunk, so yeah i’d expect a fair amount of bin dipping for cooler eyeballs.

Ah, not unexpected I suppose. After years of Fallout etc being garbage picking sims, I might not get much thematic content out of this robotic activity of clicking on everything. I guess with all the focus on different paths, different ways to play, would be fun to get that stuff with say money from quests rather than dumpster diving and crafting etc. Or at least, I'd like to just do a little bit of that. I'm just a bit bored of that aspect of RPGs at the moment.

Being based on a pen and paper game, I'm sure those sessions didn't involve checking hundreds of trash piles like a computer RPG session would. But this is all just pipedream talk, I'm sure I'll dig the game even with this aspect of RPGs I'm bagging on here. I could attempt a no trash run. Really I don't mind the trash, I'm just not into looking for crafting ingredients so much.

In general, we've talked about this before here, but I think more interesting and varied is on the upswing. We've tried bigger huger, and did get some great giant map RPGs. I think exploring in this other direction, more intricate engaging spaces, that's what's up.

That said, likely Elder Scrolls 6 and Breath of the Wild 2 will continue to be giant huge maps with a lot of traveling. Since that's probably what people expect, and hopefully they can pull it off. I'm just really in the mood for more of what they're going for here with Cyberpunk.

Digging the thread, liked the book talk and whatnot earlier.

One take, there were a few mentioning how cyberpunk's vibe and neon aesthetic was supposed to be oppressive, but was misinterpreted as cool later etc. I don't think that's the case myself. Talking about stuff made in the 80s that I watched in say the late 90s for the first time, I think I could still pick up the vibe.

Take Blade Runner, being cool is very much a big part of it. By then noir cool was very established, even back in 1960 Breathless was commenting on and paying tribute to that coolness. And 80s cyberpunk stuff like anime especially, that was all I'd say aiming to look as cool as possible. Megazone 23, Bubblegum Crisis, stuff like that.

Not to split hairs, I just think bleak and cool aren't mutually exclusive. Though for sure the stuff about there often being more to it than just coolness, I concur.

Where you're going, you won't need your eyes to see.

I've gotta check that out. It's on my list for after the Sprawl stuff, been getting a bunch of recs on here. Could we get a bit of a sell on it? A "hard sell" you might say? In Hardwired the Corporations won, they ascended to heaven, and when governments attempted to reassert control, the Corporate Blocs retaliated by dropping rocks down the orbital well, destroying cities, killing millions and fracturing nations. But it wasn't enough, although they had the stars they weren't free from the mud, they still needed resources, they still needed trade. High grade Orbital goods, like pharmaceuticals, computer cores, and cybernetic implants were relatively cheap around the space ports close to equator, but the further away from the Free Trade Zones the harder these products are to come by. Individual states would impose tariffs and restrictions and eke out a living on goods passing through their territory, getting to the point that it was more profitable to run contraband around the laws rather than with them. At first they'd run contraband through the air, in stealthed up jets called Deltas, and the Delta Jocks were born, pilots who flew their jets through the 'face, one with their machines. But soon the technological tide would turn, air defenses became impenetrable and the Deltas would be replaced by Panzers, uparmoured ground effect vehicles driven by Panzerboys and Panzergirls, still running the line and delivering the goods. And that's where the story kicks off.

That does sound pretty darn cool. Thanks!

I predict a lack of disaster for this entertainment release. Maybe I'm crazy. I'm looking forward to it, playing it on the ol' PS4. Since the main attraction is walking around and talking to NPCs, checking out the city etc. It's fine with me if it's a bit of a low detail port that dips in frames here and there. And I just doubt this port is gonna be terrible. Plus, us folks who play these versions have a higher tolerance for these dips and drops. It's still gonna look better than a 360 game from 2010, and that's all I really need. It's about the writing and the character, I'd play a PS2 port of it. I'd play it on Dreamcast, even better.

It's still worthwhile to have one. It plays games, has exclusives (timed at least), and it costs a lot less. I have a mighty fine gaming PC built in 2012. It just happens to be below the minimum specs for Cyberpunk, so playing it on PS4 is a fine option at the moment. I also played Witcher 3 on PS4 and it was fine, even though I played some more recent games on PC, it's just nice to have options.

I do agree there being so many is a bit nutty, the mid-gen upgrade doesn't appeal to me at all. You lose a lot of the value if you need to get two within the seven year gen or so.
