This game is so overwhelming. Is there a go-to website/youtube channel that noob friendly guides on each of the characters? What are the pros and cons of each, what playstyle to use for each, what are some good abilities to combo together etc? You're better off giving a bunch of them a try and get your basics in order before you start looking into specific strats

Otherwise, idk, choctopus has some good guides

Work on the basics but then play Classic mode or something and see what characters you like to play. Or go with your favorite character. Unless you're trying to be hardcore (please don't try to be hardcore), the fun thing is taking your favorite mascot and beating poo poo up with it.

Yeah, Smash Bros is explicitly designed to be super easy to get into. Only downside is if you really want to be hardcore you may have to unlearn habits from fighting the AI.

And stuff you learned from past games. I remember rolling feeling pretty effective in your average fight back on 64 and Melee, and not rolling has been harder to adjust to than I would've expected, but I do use it more just for placement than actual dodging these days.

I'm still poo poo at spot-dodging but I more regularly just shield.

Oh trust me, I won't be hardcore. I just want to know each character enough to give my friends tips when they pick them but also be good enough to know how to beat whatever seemingly impossible to combat cheese move that each character has.

My favourite characyer is Met Knight cause I liked playing him on one of the old versions.

I'd also like to be able to confidently jump of a ledge to hit someone in the air like I see all the pros do and live to tell the tale. (90% of my deaths are rolling off the edge of the map with an ability I was unfamiliar with or from casting my up B move before double jumping)

Any widely agreed control changes you recommend? I can't stand the fact that up on the stick is jump, so I changed that, is there anything else I should do?

Also, in general is there any way to avoid ultimates? Is there some that are totally unavoidable or is it just an Insta death?

Meta Knight is pretty good. You want to use edge guarding a lot, especially given how mobile he is in the air. Also learn how to do up air juggles out of dash attack. Mess around in training mode with it for a bit on different characters, starting with a big target (Donkey Kong, usually) and working your way to smaller characters like Pikachu. Also learn which moves are your kill moves and what percent they KO on Link in the middle of Final Destination to give you a good idea of the general knockback it has.

Smash is pretty easy to pick up and there's few characters which require much time investment to perform well as, but much of your success comes from matchup knowledge and player psychology, which you can only get by just devoting time to it.

As for control changes, it depends on what you do and how versatile you are. Many people suggest binding jump to a left shoulder button so you don't need to claw grip to perform more intricate actions. This isn't a problem if you already claw grip, though.

As for avoid Final Smashes, it just depends on the character using it. Best way to learn how to avoid them is just to try them out in practice mode and see how they hit. The weirdest one is coincidentally Meta Knight's, whose Final Smash hits high above him for some reason.

There are A LOT of characters so knowing what they can and can't do is a bit tough to just spit out. Being able to communicate basic controls and giving them a minute to figure out what their specials are is the best thing.

I don't know Meta Knight well enough, but I suppose you'd want to figure out how to counter characters with projectiles since he hasn't got any. I also got rid of the up-stick jump. Some people have put jump on the shoulders, I don't know if I could live with that. Your right-stick is normally used for smash attacks, but I suggest mapping it for tilts since those can often be trickier to get out.

When someone is doing a repetitive easy move, the best thing to do is give them some space and think it through. MK is great for this since he's fast and can out-jump a lot of characters. If they're shooting projectiles then go over them, they may not realize how to counter that in time. Also, I know I play Ness, but grabbing is just a great mechanic overall that is often forgotten, and last master the short-hop attacks, this is jumping and attacking at the same time. You won't go as high nor will you hit as hard but it lets you use your aerials quickly.

Last general bit of advice from a fairly amateur player, is don't forget to use all your moves. Obviously some moves are better than others, but you also don't want to rely on the most obvious things. I know I personally never use my down-tilt or up-tilt as Ness and I probably should. I've just started reminding myself I could d-air more often than I do, to great results.

You can avoid some Ultimate attacks, but they're meant to either kill or really damage. Their usefulness is also pretty disparate. I think you can successfully spot dodge? Normally just try to bait one out and then jump over it if it's like the majority of them. I usually don't play with them since I find they break the flow of the game too often. Which leads to another point. Items can be super fun, but not all items are fun. As cool as they are I'd advise getting rid of Assist Trophies and Poké balls (the latter are a bit better) as they tend to just gently caress things up a bit too much and come out a bit too often. Curate your item list otherwise it can get a bit too hectic.

Most people change that so the right stick actually tilts, which is the non-smash directional attack. You may want to try that as it's usually a much better option and you are already used to smashing manually!

The reason why it's a better option is because it's harder to do a fast tilt, and once you start getting better at the game tilt attacks are a lot more useful than smashes for most characters.

It's a Half Life Alyx thing. The reason why is in the spoiler, in case you're still planning on dropping $1,000 for a VR setup to play it.

At the end of Alyx, you meet the G-Man. He's considerably more chipper and charismatic than any other incarnation and smiles more often. On top of this, a fanmade SFM video was made which remade all the G-Man speeches in older games using the Alyx model. The video received strong criticism because the fan creator gave him a giant grin when speaking every single line, spurring a resurgence of the "goofy/happy G-Man" images from the mid-2000's.

The pose in that image in particular is a reference to American Psycho.
