Having wedged the crowbar between the seams of the lid on one of the chests, Mokrul was now using the full force of his upper body to try to rip the container open. He fully expected its contents to go everywhere if he was successful using this particular tactic. Responding to Sorin, he concedes, "I'll admit, it's certainly got the atmosphere and rhythm of something eldritch." Speaking a bit louder to ensure Noroco heard him, as he could almost feel the man's footfalls away from him, he explains, "It's just. I don't know, my instinct is to never make things easy for my adversaries, I guess? If someone goes out of their way to lure me into a particular position with an evil sounding chant, I'll drag that out and make them earn it. If you go everywhere except where they want you, that means they're liable to get angry about it and accidentally show their cards." He shrugs, admitting, "Maybe that's just my own messed up worldview, but it's served me well so far."

He knew, of course, that he could build a compelling argument for either course of action. If the chanting was coming from the source of the problem, it made a certain amount of sense to head straight towards it. Clearing the area might very well drain their stamina and make them more likely to make a mistake during a pivotal moment, after all. That notwithstanding, though, there was a very real risk of getting trapped between a rock and a hard place if they decided to leave their flank exposed by delving further underground before securing the area. Whether that 'hard place' ended up being a nest of those tentacle mouth monsters, another ghost, or some new horror, he couldn't say. It didn't really matter what the threat was, though, just that it might exist.

Making their way downstairs Roc and Sorin twist down through another staircase. The chanting which had been distant becomes more clear...

HE IS ANCIENT

HE IS ANCIENT

HE IS THE LAND

The voices echo up the stairs, sounding like a mix of men and women. The pair find themselves at the bottom of the staircase in a large antechamber. 13 alcoves sit in the room, a pedestal with a small object sitting on each arranged in no particular order. Two doorways lead out of the room, one twisting off to more unknown passages and the other leading down to a portcullis blocking entry to a large flooded room, which sounds to be the source of the chanting. Beyond the portcullis in the large room featureless stone pillars support the ceiling, and a breach in the west wall leads to a dark cave heaped with refuse. Murky water covers most of the floor. Stairs lead up to dry stone ledges that hug the walls. In the middle of the room, more stairs rise to form an octagonal dais that also rises above the water. Rusty chains with shackles dangle from the ceiling directly above a stone altar mounted on the dais. The altar is carved with hideous depictions of grasping ghouls and is stained with dry blood.

Rose appears and hides close behind Noroco. "I don't like this. Mum and Dad said they had trapped a monster down here, it must be in this room. But...What is with the beds and the chanting.... She trails off and looks up at Noroco with a look of concern.

Having succeeded in his chosen task, Mokrul gathers up the spoils, being a hairbrush, a sword, an eye patch, some cloth and some coin. The pouch was, of course, the last thing he noticed. Only Lordorim was nearby to hear at this point, but he can't help himself, "Ugh, really? People are gross."

With a sigh, he stows it all in his pack and reconvenes with the sergeant and Skinny. "I think the boys went downstairs. I ...don't love leaving our flank exposed to unknown territory, but I'm also not a huge fan of splitting up." He eyes the nearby passageway they've yet to explore, and the staircase towards the chanting, clearly considering his options.

When Noroco sees the alter, everything starts to click into place. He moves a hand protectively toward Rose, his eyes growing intense and distant as the events seemed to play out in his head.

"The family the town talked about, the one that disappeared. It was this one. The father, he wanted to live forever. It drove him insane - or maybe he was insane first"

The note that the sergeant found overlays onto the house they have seen and it makes sense. A horrific, gut wrenching sense.

"He built all of this. This was his attempt to buy eternity through blood, pain and suffering. He called out to darkness and destroyed everything around him in his frenzy. A wife cast out, or killed, children locked away for dead in your madness. Another woman then, leading to a stillborn child, the mother's spirit trapped in grief upstairs. Was that another deal you made? Another sacrifice to your bleak patron? And what did it get you in the end?"

His aura takes a dark tone, shadows seeming to play along his form as fire begins to play between his fingers along with a ghostly wisps of arcane power.

"What say you, Gustav? Are you still down here? Did you find the immortality you gave so much for?"

Noroco is going to challenge the chanting voices, suspecting that at least one of them is Gustav Durst.

Brother Sorin of the Ruby Rose

Sorin doesn't quite register Roc's tirade, at least at first. The sheer sense of evil radiating from the bloodied altar is enough to stagger him and only by focusing on Sune's cleansing light can he throw off its insidious nature.

He moves with purpose towards Rose and Roc, saying, "Avert your eyes, child. There's nothing you need see here." As Roc pieces together a travesty most foul, Sorin's concern is with his friend's spectral headmate. There's the chance that such revelations might well distort her being, twist her into a creature of rage and pain like they cleansed upstairs. Or, indeed, the sheer evil of this place may yet do the same. He doesn't even begin to understand what result that might have on Roc. He attempts to put his hand on Rose's shoulder, providing her anything else to fix upon in this surely emotionally trying moment, but it passes through her spectral form. "This den of evil must be cleansed. It's an abomination on this town."

Well you all are adventurers and....My dad was hiding something down here. So we have to deal with it! Be adventurers!"

Plot, hallway posted:

... tight gloomy dirt lined pathway ... overwhelming smell of decay from the halls ... a grey humanoid claw sticking out of the ground.
Remaining close enough to carry on a conversation with the sergeant while his chicken explores onward, Mokrul side-eyes the hall a bit. "Hm.", he responds, mostly to a question he had posed to himself mentally, but also to the sergeant's statement.

Plot, staircase posted:

... stone crypt ... three sections ... north-east one is empty ... the south-east one is sealed ... south-west tombs are engraved with the names Rosavalda Durst and Thornboldt Durst.
There were crypts for properly burying people not particularly far away, and there seemed to be at least a few 'spares' that hadn't been used. Why bury someone ... or something, he supposed ... in the ground instead? Perhaps the crypts were reserved for the family, and that had been a servant? Or perhaps it was what remained of one of the multitude of villagers that had apparently rather foolishly ventured into the bowels of this place.

Plot, room posted:

... a room with a large wooden table ... floor is strewn with bones of various sizes.
That didn't quite fit together, though. The room they were standing in was filled with bones, and its former tentacle monster inhabitant didn't seem to be a particularly picky eater. Why hadn't the tentacle beast eaten the readily available and presumably delicious claw if that was the case? The answer, fairly obvious to Mokrul, was that the tentacle beast had some sort of good reason for not eating it. "Ah.", he comments, again mostly to himself. Hidden danger of some kind, he assumed.

He began to focus on the area, trying to divine its nature. More guesswork, much like his policy with picking locks: always try to figure it out in order to keep yourself sharp. Was it the telltale remnant of a trap, indicating that the dirt pathway could collapse and bury an unwary traveler? Perhaps the hallway was papered over with an illusion, not unlike parts of the house above them. If that were the case, what might be concealed? The nearby well might have once fueled a quicksand pool before it dried up, and the passageway could still be dangerous as a result if his eyes couldn't be trusted. There were a number of other possibilities, each less likely but more exciting than the last.

One way or another, he supposed, his next step was clear. Reaching into his bag of feed, Mokrul tosses a healthy sprinkling in the general vicinity of the claw. A belligerent chicken was usually enough to tease out the specifics of a deathtrap, mundane or otherwise. He comments to the sergeant with a sigh, "Odds are pretty good another chicken is about to bravely fall in the line of duty. You ... might want to stand back." Mokrul takes his own advice, peeking around the corner from the room.

Watching Mokrul plug the ghoul in front, the Firbolg decides to start attacking the second one before it can get to the front. With the same pin-point accuracy, his arrow flies with a slight arc into the second ghoul's eye. His lips twitch, a minute expression of satisfaction; slaying the undead, even if they weren't necessarily the ones from his visions, was never a terrible chore.

Move back a little.
Attack vs Ghoul at 1d20+6=26. CRIT for 1d8+1d8+4=15 piercing damage to the ghoul that's second in line.

Lordorim's flashy flourish didn't seem to arouse much commotion from the Ghouls, probably because they hadn't risen out of the ground yet.

He watched as one lumbered towards him. "Aha! I see you are not dissuaded by my elaborate sword drill, how about this!" He said as he slashed out with his Long-sword.

Lordorim rolls a 20 to hit the Ghoul, and inflicts 12 slashing damage total

REMIND ME AGAIN HOW THE LITTLE HORSE-SHAPED ONES MOVE?

Elayne grinned, her weathered face creasing. Anything was better than endless tension, even smacking ghouls in the face with a blade on a stick. Speaking of which...

The Sergeant hauls the halberd off her back and expertly thrusts it past Lordorim, stabbing at the ghoul in the doorway.

Actions:
Halberd attack: 1d20+5 24
Halberd damage: 1d10+3 7 slashing damage
I'm going to pre-emptively not make a bonus attack with the butt of the weapon since Lordorim's in the way and that seems like asking for trouble. :v:

Under the flurry of blows from the groups front-liners the lead ghoul collapses, but another quickly fills the void. The ghoul lunges at Lordorim, but its grasping claws are knocked aside by the skillful swordsman. Another ghoul emerges from the tunnel and makes a line towards Erevan, raising its claws and striking him across the arms. A chill goes down Erevan's spine and a feeling of vertigo pulls at him, something in the ghouls claws is having a reaction in him.

The final ghoul makes its way downstairs, and is greeted by a blast of magic and fire from the pair in the sub-basement.

Resisting the ghoul's nauseous power, the Firbolg disappears from view upon being hit. But a moment later, an arrow flies over Mokrul's head and pins the ghoul in the arm. "Sergeant, if you wouldn't mind...?" he asks, hoping Elaine will engage the new combatant.

Mokrul Verdant Allweather > 13 / 13 HP / 13 AC

Hoping to reduce the volume of their problem a little bit, Mokrul keeps his attention focused on the ghoul already engaged with Lordorim. An arrow quickly finds its target. Not long thereafter, Mokrul wisely ducks behind the sergeant, not particularly keen on bringing a bow to a claw fight.
>> Attack (action) 18 >> vs. the ghoul, dealing 4 piercing damage.
>> Movement >> 5', behind the sergeant.

As the first Ghoul landed in two neatly severed chunks in front of Lordorim another lunged foward and took a swipe at his person, which he very casually fended away from him. "You gents have that one behind me right? Yes? Okay that's good." With snake like speed the sword thrust outwards towards the Ghoul standing before him.

Lordorim stabs at the Ghoul that dared to swipe at him, rolling a 22 to hit, and inflicting 10 damage.

Under the combined fire and steel of the party on the second floor both ghouls fall. On the stairs, first blasted by magics and then engulphed in holy flames the last ghoul collapses to the ground twitching. The halls of the basement are silent for a moment, until the chanting from the chamber below begins again.

"I should rather we stir up nothing at all," comes the Firbolg's wistful sigh, "but I suppose we must put an end to this once and for all." The tall archer doesn't particularly seem bothered by the ghoul's claw wound in his side, though one might suspect he is simply putting up a poker face, given the gnarly look of the tears in his flesh. "Have you found the source of the chanting, Brother Sorin?"
