We don't have a general CC-shooting-the-poo poo chat thread, and I figured I'd remedy that.

Last year I was doing an art foundation (pre-university course designed to make up for the horrible state of art education in schools), and the thing I found most valuable was sharing a workspace with a bunch of creative-nerds of wildly different specialisations and just talking stuff over. You talk to a designer about your ideas, and you're going to get wildly different thoughts than you will talking to a poet or sculptor, and it ended being an incredibly valuable resource to me. I miss it, and it's something I've been struggling to find since.

So what's everyone working on at the moment? My current thing is super-short-form comics, 8xA7 (~11x8cm) pages, doing a new one each month. The idea behind it is because I'm new at comics, I figure the first bunch I make will all be poo poo, so I might as well start over monthly so I can use the lessons I learn. The specific format is because that can be folded from an A4 sheet, so I print them at home and leave them scattered about the place. Plus it's just cool to be able to make the thing from start to finish and hold it in my hands.

Like shooting poo poo in a barrel

I'm trying to finish the 3rd draft of a short story, nearish-future scifi primarily focused on the interaction between the protagonist and an emergent, city-spanning AI. Writing sucks and is bad and I should go back to drawing.

I dunno if you've already posted about this thread in the art threads, but you might wanna pop into the major CC threads and let people know this is here, since many folks only read the threads in their bookmarks.

Good call, I hadn't thought of that!

Is your AI self-improving ? I can imagine weird poo poo with a relationship when one person is growing smarter by the second. It'd be a bastard to write though.

Writing is awesome, the cleanup time makes up for any sins.

Yeah, I know that feeling, I'm scanning a load of old sketchbooks at the moment, and I keep being like "what the christ was this".

Turns out turning sketchbooks into .cbr (comic reader files, made by renaming .rar archives) files works really well, it's dull work but it's freeing up so much space. Or at least it will, when I can bring myself to chuck the hardcopy, it feels kinda sacrilegious.

Well LUCKY YOU ASKED:

quote:

Against the background of a darkening sky, all of the past Presidents of the United States gather before the White House, as if to commemorate some great event. In the left hand corner of the painting sits a man. That man, with his head bowed appears distraught and hopeless as he contemplates his future. Some of the past Presidents try to console him while looking in the direction of the modern Presidents as if to say, "What have you done?" Many of these modern Presidents, seemingly oblivious to anything other than themselves, appear to be congratulating each other on their great accomplishments. In front of the man, paper trash is blowing in the wind. Crumpled dollar bills, legislative documents, and, like a whisper—the U.S. Constitution beneath the foot of Barack Obama.

McNaughton Responses to Criticisms of The Forgotten Man

I would like to take a minute to explain some of the points of confusion for those who wish to interpret my picture. Why did I paint this? Like many Americans I feel shock at the direction our country is heading. There is a great polarizing effect taking place in America today. There are many who swoon over Obama's policies of redistribution of wealth. What will the government give me? If you believe this is the proper role of government you will certainly see great CHANGE in your lifetime. I wanted to paint a picture that portrays the plight of the common man. Perhaps the FM is already experiencing this now or will in the future. My hope is that he will "wake up!" now before it is too late.

* There is no racial meaning or undertone that the FM is not black. This is not a racial painting; it is about the vanishing of the American dream.

* It is not a partisan painting. I take no favoritism of Republicans or Democrats. Both parties are guilty.

* The only solution I offer is to take a 180 degree turn and return to the principles of the Constitution, which define a limited government, protect individual and states' rights and make no allowance for any of the baggage we have accumulated over the years in the form of entitlement programs. The only way to cure the cancer is to root it out and endure the painful healing. Perhaps, with God's help, we will survive.

* Is it disrespectful to have in my painting the President of the United States standing on the Constitution? Is the President without reproach? I am simply one American speaking to another American. The painting symbolically suggests the actions of Barack Obama as well as other presidents. Yes, their actions speak louder than words as do the brushstrokes in my painting.

* I have endeavored to keep this information simple and to the point. The information is historical, if it is not familiar to you Google it.

* I picked the trashed papers based on the issues that I believe have been the most damaging to America. These issues have been trampled by politicians of both parties for over a century. When will the American people decide to defend the Forgotten Man? Let us raise our voices together and demand the kind of CHANGE that will truly save our way of life.

* Why did I not mention critical information about some Presidents which defined their presidencies? My only purpose is to identify each President and with simplicity express what they have done to either help or hinder the Forgotten Man. I invite all to search deeper into the history of the painting's message and discover if what I paint is true. Can you truly say our house is in order when our debt is stealing away the future of every man woman and child in America?

I'm a sucker for my Lamy fountain pen with Carbon Black ink, it's so smooth and pleasant to draw with. But really, what pen you want is going to depend on the effect you're after.

I can't stand dip pens, too much hassle and they constantly need dipping or blotting or cleaning. I'm working on getting used to using a brush, but it takes time.

Although I like writing with a fountain pen I wouldn't really recommend one for art. They are hundreds to thousands of times more expensive than dip pens and you're pretty much stuck with the nib that's on it. Whereas even very good quality nibs and nib holders are cheaper than ink. Also with a fountain pen the ink is very watery, a lot more likely to smear, and will likely not survive interaction with other media.

Different inks do different things! Good ink can be waterproof and nicely thick. Mine is lubricated, for extra innuendo. You can also get flex-nib fountain pens, though they suffer from the same scratchiness as dip-pens.

Nice, and much the same line of thinking that pulls me out of despair.

I try to remember that we're monkeys-in-top-hats stuck to a giant ball-bearing that's screaming through space round a perpetual nuke - when you think of it like that, doing anything more than clinging to the ground and screaming seems like a pretty good acheivement.

I got rejected from art school about a decade ago - art-wise, it was the best thing to happen to me, I was like 'right, I'll show those chucklefucks' and really stepped my game up. Still sucked rear end though. It might be worth writing to them to find out what they didn't like, so at least you can get some feedback out of it.

As a counterpoint to the art-despair chat, what does art-enlightenment feel like to y'all? To me there's a groove I can sometimes hit, where I have a load of parts of a project on the go, and I'm bouncing between them, spinning a bunch of plates with the lightest touch, and it feels like I'm flying somehow, or surfing a wave, no effort needed.

Also, I'm considering a master's in sequential next year. I love the idea of being a Master of Comics.

I'm realising slowly that a big part of being a Real Artist is learning how to self-promote and actually say 'hey my stuff is good, you should give me money for it'. I use blender[/blender] (freeware) and [url="http://terawell.net/terawell/"]design doll (limited free version). Mostly blender, it lets me make mockups like this:

High quality, huh? The main reason I use blender is that are a billion good tutes on youtube, and it's free. It's really good for lighting stuff in specific ways, and way more powerful than I need. The biggest downside is complexity (like photoshop but with another dimension!) and also it's really easy to get sucked into refining the model and accidentally spending a night making a far more detailed model than you intended.

Design doll I've only just got hold of, not used much, but it seems good for weird angled people:

Other things people use are Google Sketchup (free), and you can do a surprising amount by just folding some paper and making blu-tac blobs for characters, using a camera.

e: Just saw the luddite comment. I'd probably start with sketchup, mainly cos it's what was introduced on my art foundation where they assumed zero computer skill, so I assume it's fairly intuitive (I pulled a sicky that day, so can't speak from experience).

I’ll probably grab sketch up too and try that out. This might be a dumb question but can you import/export models between the two?

Maybe probably? They're similar enough in function that I don't think you'd really need to, though I believe blender is much more flexible.

Discussion here says yes, you can. I might have to check out sketchup more seriously myself, actually.

My advice would be to get some practice drawing (and shading) from life - grab something out the fridge, fruit and veg are ideal, and draw it. Maybe do the same thing in different lighting to see how that effects it (what colour does an apple go in a streetlight?). It might not be what you want to draw 'for real', but it'll help you get a feel for how shadows work in real life on a relatively simple shape, and then you can apply that to the stuff you actually care about.

And yeah, art is hard. But it's really cool too!

The self-taught thread should have some good info, and could do with ressurecting!
