So this game has been getting a out there with the collab but it's ok because these units are either decent and free, or useful but paywalled.

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqXrFGQa7Cc

Ok, that wasn't the real trailer but a fun April Fools joke that's still pretty cool. This is a 2D sprite game similar to classic Final Fantasy games such as FFIV, FFV, and FFVI. T

What is Final Fantasy Brave Exvius?

Final Fantasy Brave Exvius is a mobile F2P RPG from Square-Enix and the makers of Brave Frontier. Released Globally in the summer of 2016, and in Japan 8 months before that. It shares some minor similarities with Final Fantasy Record Keeper but it's mostly Brave Frontier with a huge coating of Final Fantasy. Using given story characters and heroes from classic FF games you form a 5-man squad to run through dungeons, fight super bosses, and even other player teams in an Arena. Your story is standard Final Fantasy fare with an evil force destroying crystals, but the music is really good. Some of the art, specifically the animated backgrounds are really quite beautiful if you stop to pay attention to them. Some of the sprites are better than others, and some have some very fun and enjoyable animations. Combat should feel right at home to fans of the FF series, particularly of the Nintendo era.

This thread is focused on the Global version of the game but there are some goons that play on the JP version as well.

Gameplay

Every 5 minutes you get 1 NRG, which is the stamina that you’ll spend to play most of the content. This is pretty standard with most mobile games and yes you can spend premium currency to refresh your NRG to your max, and also buy refreshes from bundles which is helpful for new players as you can extend over your max. Similarly, you have a rank which determines your maximum NRG level, as you complete content you’ll gain EXP that will increase your rank. Like many other games of its type, Exvius has daily login rewards, daily quests that reward a bit of Lapis (premium currency), and a constantly revolving door of events.

There are three areas where you’ll be spending your time playing the game:

1) World Map: contains dungeons, towns and explorations. Dungeons consists of sequential battles with no break in between. Explorations are open areas where you wander around, find hidden treasure, and fight enemies in random battles. In both cases at the end of an exploration, or at the end of a dungeon there will be a battle with a boss during which you’ll need to employ more skills and tactics using your party’s abilities to win. As you get further into the story mode, bosses can become very challenging however. Towns do not consume NRG to visit and are essentially Explorations without battles. NPCs in both explorations and towns can offer quests which may have you retreading an exploration to fight a hidden enemy, delivering an item to someone, or killing a certain number of a specific enemy; some quests have very nice rewards and are worth doing.

2) The Vortex: This is an area with limited time dungeons(including Raids), limited time explorations and the ‘Chambers’. Just about every week there is something new, or something old brought back, in the Vortex. These can be event dungeons based on a specific FF game, a unique series of battles that tells a side story in the Exvius world, or even a Raid where players kill a boss repeatedly earning more and more raid currency as the kill count rises. Also in the Vortex are the ‘Chambers’. There are two types of Chambers: The Chamber of the Fallen(aka Trials) where you’ll fight very difficult bosses for very good gear and rewards, and the Chambers of Desires which you can open 1 during a 24 hour period and will reward with you a variety of things such as awakening mats to raise the star level of your characters, ability awakening mats which allow you to increase certain abilities of characters(aka Enhancement), or just generally helpful things like Gil(the non-premium currency) or EXP.

3) The Arena is an area that does not use NRG but is instead participated in using orbs. These orbs regenerate at 1/hour and max at 5 no matter your rank. The arena has two parts, the primary arena is where you’ll match your team up against other player’s teams. The other team is automated and it’s entirely random what they do, but you’ll get to choose your attacks. The other section of the arena is the Coliseum where you’ll fight your way through harder and harder monsters getting rewards at each plateau.

What is combat like?

Combat is typical turn based FF style combat. When it’s your turn, choose an action for each character, resolve the actions in whatever order you like, and then watch and see what the enemy does: repeat until one side is dead. There are obviously some more nuances to combat than this, but If you actually like combat in the FF games when it’s more about using a variety of different party configurations and skills to win, then this game is for you.

This sounds awesome, what’s the catch?

Like most mobile games everything is free to a point. There is only a single character locked behind a paywall so that’s not too bad, but almost every other character is attained completely randomly. Each character has a base rarity ranging between 3★-5★ for premium characters and 1★-3★ for “friend point units”(these are all garbage outside their TMs). When you pull a character from the premium pool you do so with the following odds: 78% of your draws will be a 3★ character, 19% will be a 4★ character, and only 3% of them will be a 5★ character. I’ll bet you can guess which ones are the best. This means that if your favorite character is one of the rare (5★ base) characters, there’s a pretty darn good chance that you’ll never get that character as there is no way to purchase a specific character. 6* characters are available for many blues, golds and all rainbows; requiring farmable materials to upgrade.

Furthermore getting ‘rolls’ on the gacha is pretty expensive all things considered. $100 USD translates into 18,000 Lapis. For 5000 Lapis you can get 11 rolls one of which will be guaranteed a 4★ or better character, you can spend 250 Lapis once per day for a single roll, or you can spend 500 Lapis for a single roll (never do this). However, the game does have a few positives in this regard, first being that there are banners which increase the drop rate for specific characters by a fairly significant degree and the game also gives out a fair amount of summoning tickets which can be saved and used for a free roll at any time.

The other big negative of the game is that there is a terrible reward system for using a unit frequently called Trust Mastery(TM). Each unit has a Trust value that has a 10% chance of increasing by .1% every battle. When a unit gets to 100% you get their Trust Master Reward(TMR) which is typically some of the best gear in the game. This system is incredibly slow through the normal course of play (My lightning which as of this writing I’ve been using very frequently for 8 months is around 35%) and initially forced players to do what’s called “Macroing”. Macroing is using an emulator to have the game autoplay itself on your PC, typically done by players at night while they sleep. Doing this, players are able to send their characters into battle more frequently and thus level their trust faster.

The designers eventually created Trust Moogles which are units that can be merged into other units to increase their trust by 1%/5%/10%, but are typically high end mission rewards in tough battles, or moderately priced event currency purchases. Essentially if you aren’t TM Macroing, you’re characters are never going to come close to reaching their potentials and you’ll find high end content impossible. Note that this system does not require you to spend premium currency but you can speed up the process with it; this is inadvisable for new players who have a low NRG cap. Game has been handing these out at a fairly steady stream as every event each week tends to have at least 1 10%, and you can get a 5% from weekly expedition rewards so you can knock out at least 1 TMR a month without Macroing.

So that’s it. If you can handle random luck of the draw in getting good units and you don’t mind setting up an automated system on your PC to grind the best gear for you while you sleep; you can handle the worst this game has to offer!

If you want to join us, download it from your respective Apple/Android store, but DO NOT sync it with your primary Facebook account until you have read the next post.

★★★★ IMPORTANT ★★★★★

REROLL UNTIL YOU GET A GOOD RAINBOW CHARACTER

For complete information on how to reroll, click here.
This might take a while (as in an hour or more).

FREE RAINBOW FOR EVERYONE ON JUNE 28TH, MEANING THIS IS A GREAT DAY TO REROLL.

There’s a lot of debate about what units are worth keeping but generally people seem to agree that rolling a good chainer is the most important. Popular chain units include: Veritas of the Dark, Orlandeau, Onion Knight (ATK) Trance Terra and Barbariccia (MAG). However; units like Noctis, Ayaka, and some of the limited time seasonal event units may be worth keeping. In many ways there are a lot of options for units and builds in the game now, so rolling for multiple base 5★ units can be better than a single good one. Be patient, use an emulator so you can do a lot of rolls at the same time and sit on accounts that roll decently so you don’t have to give up a roll, and ask in the thread if you think you might have gotten a good spread.

The 7★ meta is imminent! What this means is that all base 5★ characters will eventually have a 7★ form unlocked. 3★ and 4★ characters will not get 7★ forms. To unlock a 7★ character you will need two copies of that character, with one being at 6★ Level 100. The exact process will be made clear when the meta hits. To get a super TMR you'll need 2 more copies of that character unless Gumi decides to gently caress us the same way they did in JP by requiring 4 more copies. Cross your fingers they don't do this, then change it two months later and give us the usual "global is a different game' bullshit.

With the release of 7★ characters, many previously outdated characters got a boost back into the spotlight but not all of them will be good now. With the rainbow increase and Gumi being a bit looser with the purse strings, good characters are popping up more often so even if your starting roll isn’t as bad as it was before. That said, the only thing standing between you and a top tier character is your patience level; so I really advise you to try and get one.

7★ Characters will be released according to their original release date, with new characters that are added post 7★ upgrade having their 7★ form available on release.

-----------------------

Once you’ve rolled a good unit, link the account to your primary Facebook account and this will forever associate them. Next time you reinstall the app, choose the login with Facebook option and it will bring back this account.
Next step you’ll want to do is get your friend ID; located by clicking ‘Menu’ on the home page, then clicking ‘Player Info’. Take that code and add it to the Goon Friends Google Doc, add anyone on there that has open slots (make sure to write something ‘Goony’ as your greeting so people know you’re a goon friend), then for good measure post it in the forum and introduce yourself. People will add you and you can use our powerful allies to help coast through most content.

------------------------------------

Once you’re done that bit of prep, you’re ready to start playing the game. New players should focus on doing the story. The story will unlock a few more characters, you’ll get a lot of gear and crafting materials along the way, unlock recipes to craft gear and helpful materia, and by completing the missions in each area you’ll also earn a lot of Lapis. Which you could either use to refresh your NRG to keep grinding the story or just horde for unit pulls. Check the wiki as you go and make sure you talk to everyone as the Espers are hidden and require you to chat up townsfolk to open up their locations on the world map. Espers are very good and important things, which when connected to a unit and leveled will not only enhance that unit’s stats but also give that unit whatever abilities you’ve unlocked by leveling the Esper. Some of these abilities are very strong, make sure you try and unlock all the unique abilities that each Esper has.

Click here to read the Exvius Wiki Getting Started post.
[

There is always some event going on in the Vortex but as a new player it might be impossible for you to compete alone. Ask in the thread and see what units can carry what difficulties. Typically, a top tier unit, wielding the best gear, can solo all difficulties up to and including PRO. Depending on the event, ELT may be possible as well. Check in the thread, ask for advice on how to do the events (what skills to use with what units), and don’t try to go in without a good friend unit because you’ll get destroyed at lower levels and you’ll just waste your time and NRG.

Eventually your units will hit a cap on their level and need to be awakened. The materials to go up to 5★ are available from story missions or from the Chamber of Awakening. The materials needed to go from 5★-> 6★ are not available via grinding a vortex or through story missions. They are available either by purchasing a bundle with Lapis(not advisable unless you’re impatient) or waiting for a King Mog event (Highly Advisable). King Mog events occur every month for 2 weeks and will see you grinding battles in the Vortex and accumulating event currency which can be traded for a variety of things, but there will always be a supply of 6★ awakening mats for purchase.

Other things new players should know:

Do your daily quests, completing 5 of them is worth 50 Lapis.

Use your Arena orbs. They are refreshed 1/hr. Use the first 5 you get every day to do Arena battles against other players’ teams don’t worry about losing, you’ll still get the daily rewards (40 Lapis and 1 Star Quartz are the important rewards). Use subsequent orbs to fight your way through the Coliseum section. The Coliseum has some Lapis rewards as well as some other decent rewards.

Expeditions are side content similar to the expeditions in Final Fantasy Tactics. You choose some units to go do a job, spend some materials to increase the success chance, then those units become unavailable for a set amount of time, 3 to 24 hours, after which they return and either bring you back some relics and different rewards or fail and bring you back nothing. Relics are quite good for crafting a very nice materia but they aren’t something you’ll be able to really do early on in the game. However try to cycle them each day, doing the lower level ones (C&D level) as you can get some good rewards for weekly relic totals.

Go do the story, pop your head in the thread and ask questions, have fun. Don't be like this guy.

How do I ‘get gud’?
Learn how to chain and finish(aka Chain Capping). This is a pretty decent video that explains how it works. Note that most chainers work best with another copy of the same unit due to how their attacks are staggered.

On top of that, exploit elemental weaknesses with elemental weapons. Keep ATK/MAG buffed. Use debuffs whenever possible; even Imperil and Deprotect, which are learned by many Espers, can increase damage significantly.

I got two of the same chainers but I can't hit 20+ chains, what's the deal?
Each unit has a different frame delay between when you hit the button and when they launch into their attack. Each attack also has a set number of frames between each hit. This is regardless of animation preferences so don't worry if you turned on/off the animations. Most units have a consistent number of frames between each hit, but some have differing numbers of frames which make them difficult to chain, even if the attack itself has a large number of hits. Sometimes this just occurs at the end of an attack, like in the case of Tidus, but other times it can alternate throughout the animation; as in the case of Fryevia.

If you are using two units that are the same, and each is using the same skill, then you just need to press the buttons as fast as you possibly can. In the example linked above, 2 Setzers using 'Red card', to perfectly chain like they do, need to be pressed within 3 FRAMES(not seconds) of each other. Each unit also has a delay between when you activate them and when the first hit lands. You'll want to keep track of that because then you can figure out how long before you'll need to activate your finisher.

HERE IS A GOOGLE SPREADSHEET WITH THE CHAIN DATA OF ALL UNITS THAT YOU SHOULD BE TRYING TO CHAIN. You can use the first tab to match abilities against one another to see how their frames overlay. While it’s advisable to just use a unit with the same frames, units with different frame data can work with each other.

Now, once you've found a couple units that have similar frames, actually chaining them is...well not necessarily easy. If you're on Android you can use a magnification trick to help you chain perfectly, but if you're on iOS you can do a couple techniques(ask in the thread and post what device you're using). However, there is another way. Using macros on Nox/Memu will allow you to chain perfectly everytime, and you can even use this handy website to generate the macro for you so you don't have to mess around with editing the timestamps.

Should I roll for on this banner?

The GL meta is shaking up a bit differently, but not too differently. One thing of note is that Global Exclusive units tend to be very good.
Forums user Varance maintains an database of characters both current and upcoming with aggregate ratings from the popular sites, check it out by clicking here.

A lot of posters will come out and make announcements when certain units, like Mystea, are coming out that everyone should get a copy of. Many users also follow Reddit and other places which run the numbers on how good characters are, and will report that back. I used to maintain a top roles list in this section but really there isn’t one character that’s always going to be ahead of another one in every instance so what you’re best doing is just trying to fill the holes in your team. JP also gets exclusive units that we don’t get, and vice versa. There are also event exclusive characters that don’t make it into the general pool which tend to be rated highly, so there’s not really a point making a list of characters that you can’t pull. In short, I recommend checking Varance’s rating database but mostly making decisions on who to pull for by asking the question “What role does this character fill in my party?”.

I've heard that Killer effects are better than straight ATK, is that true?

Yes, a killer effect is applied after some of the other damage calculations and is roughly equal to 2.34% ATK against an enemy of that type. However some enemies are multiple types which makes them less effective. Killer effects don't obviously add to your ATK total but don't discount them, they're much better than straight attack in most situations. In particular, Trials and Event bosses are situations where you'll want to show up stacking killers.

I've heard X doesn't stack?

This is an outdated phrase that was popularized by JP players coming over to GL. In Global we have some Materia with the 'unstackable' tag, meaning that you can only equip one of that specific named materia. Because those materia could stack in Japan and the similarity of terms, people quickly became confused that similar effects couldn't stack(example: Ifrit's Beast Killer and a Beast Killer Materia), however then people changed the phrasing to say that "different sources could stack", the easy way to think about it is that "Everything stacks, except unstackable materia." Meaning you can't have two Dragon Killer materia, because those are unstackable, but you can have Dragon Killer and Dragon Killer+ because those are materia with different names.

Orlandeau is a good choice as he'll chain with Fryevia and he's got fairly wide gear options. T.Terra isn't bad but she's probably going to be competing for gear with Fryevia but you won't use them as the same time so it shouldn't be that tough to knock out a few pieces for her.

Orlandu is great all over again with enhancements. Purposefully or not they gave him better gearing versatility by adding all the weapon masteries. He used to be locked to a GS but now you can use any combination of the holy trinity of weapons.

TTerra and Fryevia have tons of overlap. Low to mid gear levels they can be identical. TTerra’s early power rested a lot on the fact that she can innately equip swords and thus get easy stackable 50% mag materia. Her enhancements pushed her a lot higher on base mag% so it made gearing her optimally/perfectly take a little more thought and more like a standard mage. But if you’re not swimming in BIS options Fry’s needle and L&A’s still do a lot of work.

The scientist does not study nature because it is useful to do so. He studies it because he takes pleasure in it, and he takes pleasure in it because it is beautiful. If nature were not beautiful it would not be worth knowing, and life would not be worth living. -- Henri Poincare
I got Nichol from my last 4* ticket yesterday. Threw some 3* tickets at the Nichol banner for fun. One turned rainbow!

I hope 7* Helmetless Kain is good.

Only if Reuben can be the 3* super garbage character to effectively recreate his strength in the game.

You'll hit your head and say: 'Boy, how stupid could I have been. A moron could've figured this out. I must be a real dimwit. A pathetic nimnal. A wretched idiotic excuse for a human being for not having figured these simple puzzles out in the first place...As usual, you've been a real pantload!
Sounds like this year they're only doing 1 Fan Festa so it's up to you guys in California to bring signs letting them know the Mystic Quest fans are out here and now we want 5* Benjamin with a 7* upgrade!

They need a way to make Reflect shenanigans useful again and he's definitely the guy for it.

Grave? Shovel! Let's go.

Oh hey, you should all get up in the Discord too.

It’s a real fun time, we get political a lot, debate the merits of Gau vs Bedile, watch Biske get mad when you pull a 5* banner character and post the best Wakka emoji on the internet.

I'll bring the debate to the thread, Gau is definitely the new Bedile.

At least type-0 draws finally seemed to have tapered off quite a bit.

Who should I be using as my primary chainer? Sephiroth or enhanced Tidus? I haven't gotten Brotherhood just yet.

All sensitivity has long ago atrophied
Sephiroth is in abundance, so depending on your friends list/situation I would probably go with him.

Game is fun. I've been playing this instead of Mobius or FFRK. FFDOO pushed me to play this instead, ironically.

Seph would be better than a mediocre Tidus. Tidus is if you want to do big damage with ludicrous gear

I liked FFDOO until I realized you had to do the 20-30 minute multiplayer thing like 100 times every time there was an event.

I enjoy it still here and there, but I will say that FFDOO got old and boring way faster than FFBE or even FFRK ever did. Maybe it's the combat stye, or the repetitive enemies and bosses in every chapter and event, but it just couldn't hold my interest for as long. I jump in here and there just to get new characters and stuff, but I'd hardly consider myself invested.

and you have to pull each event to stay relevant. gently caress that. I much prefer FFRK's one and done MP

I'm glad this game has no actual MP.

This. I very much enjoy FFRK's one and done gameplay style for events. FFBE as well, but there's some grinding to be had over there if you're not willing to throw money at the game.
