I got stuck in Super Metroid for months until we got internet for the first time and I was able to check GameFAQs, but I'm almost 100% certain that at least once I thought of using a power bomb on the tube in Maridia, went and tried it, and got up and turned the SNES off when nothing happened because it doesn't crack until after you move.

I was on this online chat room called Bedtime City when I was like 11. It had this puzzle game where you had to figure out the right word to say to get to the next room, I think there were around 70 rooms when I was on. People got really serious about making sure the solutions didn't get out and the mods were always watching the forums to make sure no one posted anything other than vague hints. I found out the answers were on Encyclopedia Dramatica and after getting to the last room posted constantly about how easy it was whenever anyone asked for hints. While I was on ED I saw a bunch of gore pics and couldn't sleep for a while after and it's all been downhill since then to be honest
