Klingons have a story now, as do Romulans (and to a much lesser extent, the TOS, Disco, and Dominion fractions). All the storylines join up fairly early, so most of the episodes are available for all factions, whether it really makes sense or not.

PVP is dead. Endgame is making fun outfits and driving pubbies nuts on Risa. If the summer event ever starts.

Besides what g0del said, the KDF tutorial and some early missions got a recent revision, with more to come; differences that I noticed include Warden Gazzan looking like a TOS Gorn instead of 'STO Gorn', a very early story mission now being set after the founding of the Romulan Republic and its formal diplomatic relations with the Klingon Empire, and the erstwhile 'witch of Nimbus III' now looking like and voiced by Rekha Sharma.

Not sure how long it's been but the mission where the Republic ship shows up to help you fight the Tal Shiar ship has been there for several years now. They updated it a little, but didn't change what actually happens.

The wiki died because we don’t have goon secrets anymore and r/stobuilds is a better-resourced version of the same thing. Check out a multi-part intro to ship building here: https://www.reddit.com/r/stobuilds/wiki/tenforward?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

tbh, this post helped me a ton, and is basically all you really need until you hit max level (65) at which point going to reddit and planning your build(s) in detail is a good idea.

Cythereal posted:

Tl;dr Newbie Advice

1. Get all your guns of a matching energy type.

2. Fill your tactical console slots with consoles that buff that energy type.

3. Click the offensive preset for your ship's power configuration.

Congratulations you're now better than 75% of the players in this game.

What are my energy types and consoles?

Phasers - Orange - Phaser Relay

Disruptors - Green - Disruptor Induction Coil

Plasma - Teal - Plasma Infuser

Tetryon - Blue - Tetryon Pulse Generator

Polaron - Purple - Polaron Phase Modulator

Antiproton - Red - Antiproton Mag Regulator

Pick what you like best, but pick one and stick with it. Yes, there's a different effect on each type and yes there's tons of variants of every energy type, but as a new player forget all of that. Decide what color you want to shoot and leave it at that.

I'm a new 50, what should I do?

1. Spend your free ship token on whatever ship you think looks cool and/or fits your play style. We're going to judge you as goons, but if you think the deep space science vessel looks neat, go with it.
1a. If you insist... for Feds, take the Assault Cruiser (if you like cruisers) or Patrol Escort (if you like escorts). For Klingons, take the Vo'Quv Carrier (if you like cruisers) or the Hegh'ta Heavy Bird of Prey (if you like escorts). For Romulans, take the Ha'apax Advanced Warbird (if you like cruisers) or Ha'feh Assault Warbird (if you like escorts).

2. Buy a set of white or green weapons of your desired energy type off the exchange. Mods don't matter. Also check your goon fleet bank, we have loads of random poo poo in there.

3. Buy a set of white or green tactical consoles of your desired energy type. Check the goon bank again.

4. Click the offensive preset for your ship's power.

This will be cheap and get you a highly functional boat that will last you for the rest of the game.

There's blues and purples and rep sets and mk 14s and lockbox ships and all kinds of other nonsense, but as a new player, don't worry about this unless you really want to. This kit will last you through 90% of the game's content fine and you'll out-dps quite a lot of pubbies in much flashier ships.

At 61, you'll get another new ship token but your selection of ships is very limited:

Fed: Exploration Cruiser Retrofit, Tactical Escort Retrofit, Long Range Science Vessel Retrofit

KDF: B'Rel Bird of Prey Retrofit, Marauder Flight-Deck Cruiser, Kar'fi Battle Carrier

Rom: T'Varo Light Warbird Retrofit, Dhelan Warbird Retrofit, Mogai Heavy Warbird Retrofit, D'Deridex Warbird Battle Cruiser Retrofit

Dom: See the Fed or KDF list per your allegiance choice.

What should you buy? If you're happy with your existing ship, keep it and pick your new ship based on what you need for admiralty (probably the LRSVR, kar'fi, or t'varo). If you decided you don't like your existing ship, pick a new one based on what you think you'd prefer.

Help! I'm a new player with lots of zen and want to buy a new ship! I've already got the unlock essentials! What should I buy?

Excellent question, and to be fair, there's no particularly wrong answer. Anything tier 5 and above is perfectly serviceable. So, here's a few guidelines:

1. Z-Store Bundles are always a good deal if you're interested in buying each ship as it is. This is particularly true for universal ships and cross-faction bundles.

2. Fly what you think looks good. This is the number one rule of being a happy STO player. If you really insist you can try to maximize your performance, but that's on you.

3. Ships come with admiralty tokens, which can be very useful, especially for new players.
3a. Don't forget to take the admiralty reward from the Temporal story arc "Time and Tide." The USS Pastak is a terrific card.

Some suggested buys:

1. T6 Battlecruiser. Available as T6 Cross Faction Battlecruiser Bundle, Arbiter Class Battlecruiser (Fed), Kurak Battlecruiser (Klingon), and Morrigu Heavy Warbird (Romulan). If you have to have a z-store ship, this is probably the best choice. It's nimble, fighty, doesn't look terrible (and can be downright pleasant with judicious kitbashing), and comes with a terrific starship trait that's well worth the grind. If you're into playing alts in multiple factions, the bundle is one of the best value buys in the z-store.

2. Cardassian Intel Ship Bundle. This is a pack of four ships that can be used on any faction - two cruisers, an escort, and a science vessel. That's four admiralty tokens for every character you make, and a fine ship of each major archetype to get you started and see what you prefer. For 6k zen, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better bargain.

3. 31st Century Temporal Ship Bundle. As above, but three cross-faction ships rather than four.

4. Romulan Dreadnought - Scimitar Class. If you like the Romulans and want maybe the highest-parsing ship in the game right now, here you go. Don't be fooled by the Scimitar being "merely" tier 5, this thing is still a beast.

5. T6 Escort Carrier. Available as T6 Cross Faction Heavy Escort Carrier Bundle, Alita Class Heavy Escort Carrier (Fed), Qa'Tel Flight Deck Raptor (Klingon), and Jhu'ael Tactical Carrier Warbird. If you want to fly a carrier, especially as the Federation, this is your stop barring lockbox options. For Feds, this is your t6 Akira.

6. Excelsior Cruiser Retrofit. A long-standing favorite ship of many Star Trek fans, this is the endgame quality version. Won't impress, but won't disappoint. Federation only.

7. Reliant Class - Advanced Light Cruiser. Also available in the T6 Cross Faction Advanced Light Cruiser Bundle. Are you one of those people who wants to fly a Miranda class at endgame? Shine on you crazy diamond, and enjoy.

Besides r/stobuilds and Cythereal's post that Error 404 linked, I'd like to add there's several 'budget build' guides around on YouTube and on the Internet that lean on combinations of mission rewards and reputation set gear. For example, running the Sunrise mission three or four times will net you a phaser weapon+quantum torpedo+console set: the console grants +20% Phaser Damage, a slight Auxiliary power boost, increases your energy/shield drain potency and resistance to same, and it can auto-cleanse Auxiliary power disables; the torpedo has a shield drain (which is increased on the primary target of a Torpedo Spread) as well as built-in critical chance and severity bonuses; and the energy weapon has said bonuses as well as a 2.5% chance to drain the target's shields and restore your own by that amount. The 2-piece bonus is boosted Accuracy Rating and doubled potency of the shield drains/heals, while the 3-piece gives your ship a phaser damage attack that lasts ten seconds if uninterrupted and siphons power levels during that time, with a two minute cooldown.

I would also like to append Cythereal's ship recommendations by noting that if you don't care about visuals, only consoles and starship traits, then Romulan warbirds are the 'actually account-wide' choice (like the Cardassian Intel and 31st Century Temporal ship bundles) since they can now be used by FED/KDF captains. For example, nowadays out of the T6 Battlecruiser bundle I'd only buy (or use a 100% T6 Ship coupon on) the Morrigu, as I'm not attached to the Arbiter or Kurak visuals, and out of the T6 Escort bundle (Valiant Tactical Escort/Kor Bird-of-Prey/Malem Light Warbird) I'd go with the Malem if I only wanted the Withering Barrage trait.

Finally, if the FED Legendary Bundle (officially the "10th Anniversary Legendary Starship Standard Bundle"... the Premium Bundle is not recommended to say the least) then I'd suggest it for a few reasons:
  • Both times that it's been available it's been at 35% discount (19500 Zen instead of 30000 Zen), so while that's the cost of six-to-seven regular T6 starships, each Legendary starship has been (barely) cheaper than a T5 ship.
  • Although the ships are for FED/FED-aligned characters the 6th-level Mastery starship traits are account-wide unlocks.
  • Said ships come with the ship consoles/weapons, 5th-level Mastery starship traits, and visuals of their 'predecessor' ships -- for example, the Legendary Pilot Warship includes the full 'Defiant battle cloak' set (Cloaking Device, Phaser Quad Cannons, Quantum Warhead Module) and its 5th-level Mastery starship trait is the same as that of the aforementioned T6 Escort bundle... no more need to buy three different tiers' Defiant versions (with one of them being per-character) for said battle cloak or their visuals.
  • This Bundle has the only reclaimable versions of several starship classes which were previously exclusive to Lock Boxes or Lobi, albeit with different ship specialist seats and mechanics -- for example, the Legendary Temporal Operative Escort (the NX-class) also means reclaimable-on-FED access to a previously Lobi-only console. However, the Lobi-only NX Escort Refit that that console was from has a Lt. Cmdr. Universal/Temporal Operative and Lt. Tactical/Pilot seats, while the Legendary Temporal Operative Escort has Cmdr. Tactical/Temporal Operative and Lt. Cmdr. Science/Temporal Operative seats and the Molecular Reconstruction abilities.

I think with recent trait additions you can refresh/invuln hanger pets so often that fighters make more sense again for DPS. The issue with rarity for some pets is that the elite versions tend to favor 'upgrading' to weapons with narrower firing arcs, and the AI can't keep up with that.

Drop the mission, go do something else for awhile to make sure the instance gets reset, then try the mission again. If it keeps bugging out, just skip it and go to the next one. The odds of cryptic fixing bugs in an older mission anytime soon are very low.

Duty officers are mostly used for builds now (your active ground and space doffs), but the best ones tend to come from randomized boxes and can be very expensive on the exchange. The exception is purple A2B technicians, which you can get from finishing the colonization chain missions in the B'Tran cluster and then hoping for a crit on the "Support B'Tran Cluster Colonization Efforts" mission.

As for running other doff missions, the commendation rewards are mostly more doffs and accolades/titles. The diplomacy/marauding commendations offer extra transwarp locations, and if you get rank 4, you can pick one boff from the opposite faction. Since you can get free transwarps from mission replays it's only worth working on if you really want that orion waifu for your fed captain. Or need one of the titles for your roleplay immersion. Otherwise feel free to ignore them unless cryptic re-runs one of the recruitment events.

 Frigates if the ship has them, with one exception (the cardassian yukawa frigates or however they're spelled are useless since their AI is broken, and lawl of course they're the only ship-agnostic frigates) but general use fighters are more contentious? I'm pretty sure the Nausicaan stingers are still really good but that's not an option for Feds, but in general if they have a torpedo, beams/a 360-degree weapon, and anything to buff either of those they're probably fine.

Yeah I dropped the mission and reset the instance. With some googling I found that other people have had this issue in the last two weeks or so. It seems the planet Boreth has gotten bigger or moved closer to the mission area in a recent update and that indirect dmg sometimes works(mines, eject warp plasma, etc). I bug reported it, unfortunately the episodes below it are all locked. Dunno if that's by design or what.
