Nope, the closest thing to that was when you could abuse that one cd power to double cast the redshirt summon but they nerfed that because we can't have anybody skipping their ground penance

I got 99 problems but the British ain't one.
At this point the only "Fun" to be had in ground content is once you've got an overpowered gun. Anything Mk XIV will do.

Past that, you'll have to pug ground STFs and come up with your own fun. Whether it's sending Bajorans to the camps or locking pubbies out of finishing the STF, you gotta make your own fun.

Ground fun:

1) Get a Full Auto rifle
2) Switch on Auto Fire for primary and secondary attacks
3) Watch Netflix in a Second Screen

I just got back into the game after a long rear end time. Shockingly still fun. I made a fresh Cardassian Engineer and am enjoying going through the leveling and all. I guess I should make my Jem'Hadar character a Tactical? I kinda want to do Science but it seems like that's the redheaded step child class by how people are talking.

Nah, Eng is the red headed stepchild. Science is merely mediocre.

The issue is that STO is so much all about the DPS that the class that gets the damage buffs is just plain superior.

Science is fine and dandy right now - as a captain, it provides a good mix of healing, dots, and crowd control on the ground, and in space offers two very solid dps abilities (subnucleonic beam, though, is mainly a PvP thing). Science-focused ships can do quite well these days, but they're more complex to set up and run than a traditional dps monster tac build and so not recommended for new players. Though they can do fine with a generic build if you like how they look.

I'd say my generic build that I slap onto my alts at 50 that works fine for most purposes is something like this, adjusting as necessary for whatever seats you may or may not have. These are all built from powers available at any boff trainer, there's a whole lot more powers you can get (and mk 3 versions of the comm powers) if you are so inclined, but this is my personal build on the cheap with a minimum of effort put into it.

Tactical

Beam Fire At Will 1
Beam Overload 2
Attack Pattern Omega 1 (if you don't have a comm tac)/Attack Pattern Beta 2 (if you do)
Attack Pattern Omega 2
Tactical Team 1 (for that extra ensign tac/uni a lot of ships have)

Engineering

Emergency Power to Weapons 1
Engineering Team 2
Directed Energy Modulation 1
Aceton Beam 2

Science

Hazard Emitters 1
Science Team 2
Gravity Well 1 (if you don't have a comm sci)/Tyken's Rift 2 (if you do)
Gravity Well 2

Science has one actual use - subnucing the Queen in Hive Space Elite, where her Feedback Pulse can result in you killing yourself really easily.

This role can also be filled by players of any profession in Intel ships using Subnuc Carrier Wave.

And the new Cardassian frigate pets.

Honestly you can get by okay and do good DPS with any of the three classes, just that tacs will do more since they get some baked in damage skills.

For the love of god don't play engineer, and only play science if you really really don't want to be tac for some reason.

Psycho Landlord

What are you gonna do, dance with me?

Science dudes have some of the craziest STF soloing capabilities in the game right now. Tacs are still king poo poo of doing big damage easy, but Tac also got sorta-nerfed in season 13 when they changed how damage skills interact with exotic damage abilities. Science is fine.

Eng does indeed suck though. The only way to do an endgame ship (that isn't desperately trying to pretend that dedicated tanks exist in this game) as an Engineer is a dedicated Kinetic torpedo boat, and those are super expensive to kit out and tend to be super annoying to play when doing story content. So don't be Eng.

Just give your whole ground crew shield penetrating weapons. Makes ground combat super fast when everyone has teleporting sniper rifles.

I gave my crew herald beam projectors, but I guess recommending a bunch of lobi weapons to new players probably isn't the best idea.

If you're flying a pilot escort you already have a much more effective 'oh poo poo' button anyway.

Assuming you're on PC: https://sto.gamepedia.com/Elite_Starter_Pack is a very good purchase if you plan on playing more than one character. It basically replaced the monthly subscription.

Yeah, that looks like something I could use. I need to work out how to unlock new skills on my bridge officers, they do not synergize well currently. I'm pretty sure I saw the skill books can be crafted somewhere, but I have not had luck since I've gone back to try and find them to actually make one. Lots of things to learn, this game has a lot going on.

Not as strong as you'd expect.
Look for the Bridge Officer Trainer at wherever your home base is(Earth Spacedock for Fed, First City on Quo'nos for KDF, Romulan Flotilla or New Romulus Command for Romulan). They sell most of the standard books for Science, Engineering and Tactical.

Crafted books are for the highest-end standard skills, and the non-standard specialisations like Intel or Command. Such books are also buyable off the Exchange, usually for a pittance.

Get the T6 Scimitar bundle, fly the tac variant and set it up to run cannon scatter volley.

If you're new to shipbuilding, I'd strongly suggest the STOBuilds Prelude to Ten Forward series of articles, which tries to explain the topic in terms the useless community manager could understand. I'd normally be hesitant to promote Reddit stuff but at least one of the STOBuilds legends is a goon, so we cool.

i came back from a big break and used this to setup my ground boffs. i didn't put much effort into their gear but they can take on most stuff by themselves. i'm an engineer (i know) and usually don't have time to place deployables before everything's dead.

edit:also for your gear. I use the Romulan Navy Kit and Ground Armor from the mission Uneasy Allies then the Na'kul Shield and Gun(you get the bonus as long as the minigun is slotted, you don't have to use it if you don't want to) from Temporal Front. All that with the Plasma Repeater Pistol from Uneasy Allies has been pretty powerful for me.

Honestly I just use my boffs equipment slots to store all the rep gear sets I ground out for the tailor unlocks. They still do well enough for all the content you actually bring boffs into.

MikeJF
Dec 20, 2003

Shipwise, get a T6 Tac Scimitar for cruiser or a Fleet T6 Ar'kif for escort. Probably Scim for top DPS.

For ground starter endgame gun - or hell, not just starter - just get a TR-116 from the exchange. They're relatively cheap and top-notch in combat.

I think the best generic ground rep fitout was to have Dyson armor and Nukara shield last I looked? But you'd have to finish up those reps for that.

strategist is a good one, it's usually paired up with intel in most builds I see now. I really like the Command Frequency trait from the Command tree for removing the low health req and lowering the cooldown for Fleet Support
