Not classy enough that they're expecting a lack of hostiles - if we're going to be in a fight, let's do it right and make a statement. I'd rather we overprepare than underprepare and wind up with a dead President.

Mutiny!?! More like "reinterpreted orders"

Kang starts packing up his bag for the trip to Jennings Steel. As he packs, he starts to spin his plan for the job.

"I have idea. We want the boss of this company to want us. And we want to look good. So we can do this.

Before we report to the boss, I can sneak into the factory and plant a fake bomb. Maybe Rupert can help me. I know he is good at sabotage and bombs like this.

If I get away, we can come back later and "find" the bomb. The boss will be happy. Maybe he will give us a bonus for saving his plant. Then, we can go find the real crooks. If I get caught, I will lie and claim to be working for the Tongs or someone like them. Then, the rest of the Goon Squad can arrive and take me off to "question" me. And the boss will still be happy that we are there to take care of his plant. He will feel he needs us even more now.

After that, we try to catch the people who are really attacking the factory. So of us patrol and watch the factory, trying to catch the people. Some of us pretend to be workers talk to the strikers, go to bars and talk too loud, that kind of thing. To different people, we tell different stories. We tell one, "there is a lot of money hidden in a safe in this office." We tell another, "a new machine is coming on a truck tomorrow." When they act, we will know who is to blame. Then we can feed them another lie and then trap them when they strike again."

Let's...not do that. I have no idea what the skills to fake it would be, and I suspect none of us have it.

I'll put up my formal mission proposals later today, I think.

Formal Proposals
Clear The Minefield
Our demolitions engineers are not needed for other tasks. They only need a french translator and nominal armament to handle this job. Therefore, I propose:
x5 Demo Men
x1 Expatriate French Soldier
x6 S&W Hand Ejector
...which makes a total of +19 for Combat, should it be necessary. I've also been informed in Discord that minesweeping equipment may be available for sale--buy it if it is.

Presidential Escort
We can take the drat half track, but I'm still really leery about having it in the convoy proper. I propose:
x1 M3 Half Tracks
x2 1941 Pontiac Deluxe Six Sedans (Staff Cars)
x4 Boat Drivers
x2 Expatriate French Soldiers
x4 M1 Carbines
x2 M1 Garand
...for a total of +36 for Combat

Restore the DMZ
This is our "all hands on deck" option. I propose:
x2 M8 Greyhound Light Armored Car
x1 Bell 47
x2 Expatriate French Soldiers
x10 Tank Drivers
x6 Boat Drivers
x6 M1 Carbines
x1 M18 Recoilless Rifle
x3 M1 Garand
x5 M1A1 Carbines
x2 T52E3 (.30-06)
x2 MAS-36
...which I believe adds up to +117 for Combat

That was because the automatic radar targeting was offline, and when they switched to manual the pilots found that the gunsights had all been removed.

Anyway, I'm fine with Davin Valkri's plan, and if I'm not on to say anything, assume Jean is up for doing stakeouts and stalking, he has the skills for assassinating people.

Mission Success!

The Goon Squad successfully completed their first special op! What seemed like a routine sabotage of a workplace by a communist agitator was revealed to be a funded Empire State operation to prevent the factory from producing parts for an unknown prototype weapon for the Mid-Atlantic Coalition military. After Rupert and Grunn were nearly killed by a bomb and a drive-by on the factory, the operation came under the authority of the Mid-Atlantic Service (the local intelligence agency) and the Goon Squad was assigned to eliminate all remaining Empire State agents at their isolated country farmhouse. The ambush was a rousing success, killing three of the four remaining agents and capturing the fourth.

Along with their pay for the job, Goon Squad made out with cash and bearer bonds used by the Empire State for bribes, several stolen guns, and the Empire State agents' car.

Deployment

Davin's plan won for the deployment, so it's time for everyone to head out!

The total cost of deployment is $34,760. Over the next few days, your soldiers will deploy to their respective fields of battle (or other miscellaneous task they're getting paid to do). You won't have any contact with them until they return, at which point you'll learn if the job was completed, if you took any casualties, and if your soldiers managed to bring back any interesting loot.

After the soldiers return, the payment for successful jobs is added to your account and the monthly cost for your soldiers and buildings is taken out. You'll have this new total to make another set of purchases for your base and equipment before being given the next set of missions and the brief on your next special op.

Kang spends the next few days puttering around the base. He tries picking the footlockers of various grunts, lifting whatever concealed booze he finds there. He then moves on to trying to crack the company safe when the boss isn't looking. He catches an earful from Reginald when he get caught, but he learns some very useful things about combination locks in the process.

Kang uses the purloined booze to buy driving lessons from some of the other mercs. After a few near-crashes, he's able to drive without stalling the car at every stop sign.

In the evenings, he amuses himself by throwing rusty grenade bodies at various objects around the base. One flies through the window of the mess tent during dinner, leading to a stampede Kang has to sheepishly apologize for. Thankfully, plying his buddies with stolen whiskey goes a long way to earning forgiveness.

After a few days of practice, he's able to reliably drop a pineapple grenade into an oil drum an 15 yards

New Stats (assuming I did the math right)
Lockpicking +0 (skill was at -1; adjusted cost = 1 point)
Driving -1 (cost 1 point)
Thrown Weapon (Hand Grenade) +2 (skill was at +0; adjusted cost = 3 points)

---

Now that mission is over, Kang starts contemplating what to spend our new-found cash on. He flips through a pile of old manuals and magazines scattered around the barracks/

Kang's Sears & Roebuck Order
(This is all equipment other people are welcome to use. I figured I'd get a bunch of stuff now so we're not having to constantly restock in the future. You'll note the nice selection of lethal and non-lethal tools. -1x M1 carbine converted to full-auto and cut down to look something like this, with a top-folder stock ($800 + $???)
-1x replacement baffle silencer for the Thompson ($500?)
-1x Fitz-style conversion to the S&W Military & Police ($???)
-1x trigger job for the Browning Hi-Power ($???)
-1x threaded barrel for for the Browning Hi-Power ($???)
-1x baffle silencer for the Browning Hi-Power ($???)
-20x beanbag and 20x rock salt 12 gauge shotgun shells
-1x silk vest body armor ($)

-10x Mk. 2 Frag grenades ($700)
-5x M7A3 Tear Gas grenades ($150)
-5x M18 Smoke Grenade: ($200)
-5x No. 76 Grenades (or similar self-igniting petrol bombs) with a padded metal carrying case) ($???)
-2x M37 Demolition Kits/satchel charges ($???)
-5x No. 73 Grenades painted up to look like thermos bottles ($???)
-10x Hawkins mines (or M7 mines) ($???)

"The fire bombs were very useful in Baltimore. I think we should get some of these. They light themselves when they break, so no need for matches or a lighter. Very good at night!"

"Or these, with the matches on the side, so we don't have to light that damned rag."

"And we need bigger grenades. something to fight tanks. Maybe this or ththis. We can stuff it with explosives for blow things up. Or add little metal bits for people."

"This one can be disguised as a thermos bottle!"

"This might be good, too. And they can be mines if we ever need to ambush a car or tank."

"And for the biggest booms, satchel charges. If we ever have to take out a bunker, this is the thing to use!"

"I also want more pineapple grenades. They were very useful last mission. If had tried to attack the house without them, someone might have died."

---

"We also need to bring more firepower. In the house attack, we only had three men who brought big guns. Kamran had a grease gun. Jack had a rifle. I had a Thompson. If we had not found those Marlin guns, Jack and Rupert would have been using pistols. Grunn would have had nothing if I had not brought a spare pistol."

"We need guns and grenades that we can keep in the cars for every mission."

"Without the grenades, we would have had to storm the house with and fight machine guns and shotguns inside a dark house. Or we would have fought a shootout with small guns against their machine guns and rifles."

"I suggest grease guns or those M1 carbines with the folding stocks your paratroopers used. They will fit perfectly in a car."

"And one of these for each of our team cars. If we ever have to attack a brick house, we will need bigger bullets."

Kang's Car Guns
(We'd leave these in the cars full-time as backup weapons in the event someone forgets to bring a gun on a mission, we have an ally we need to quickly arm, someone's gun jams, etc. This is purely a suggestion, people can vote on it, ignore it, whatever)

2x M1918 BARs converted to Colt Monitors (3600 + $???)
4x M3A1Grease Guns ($2,800)
4x M1 Carbines with folding stocks ($3200 + $400)
8x Mk. 2 Frag grenades ($560)
2x M15 White Phosphorous grenades for destroying the car, if needed ($560)

Their special ops mission may have been successful, but the grenade antics had burnt a contact and endangered Rupert. Discipline needed to be instilled, clearly.

...and also he needed to work on finding things that weren't targets. He remembers the shattering of porcelain and winces.

He returns to the officers' quarters and picks up some mail--someone had set up a post service even out here, it seemed. One of them is a giant Sears mail order catalog (addressed to Kang...of course), and one of them...

For those who haven't been following along in the Discord, here's a short summary of the events leading up to this.

We drove cross-country to Maryland. Kamran drove the first leg, Kang the second. Kang, if you'll recall doesn't really know how to drive and can't read any of the street signs. Amazingly, no one died, although the clutch might be a little worse for wear.

Arriving in town, we met up with the someone woebegone plant manager, Mr. Cummings, who gave us the rundown on events. Searching through the factory's files, we found a suspect, a Mr. Phil Corso. We also learned more about why we'd been hired. The Pinkertons who preceded us had suddenly refused to keep investigating the sabotage.

This lead to a two-pronged investigation. Jean, Jack, and Kamran headed off to jump in a garbage heap to stakeout Corso's apartment, while the rest of of tooled around the factory. Grunn quite cleverly planted hair traps on key machinery to see if anyone else came by to sabotage the plant.

The stakeout turned into a break-in after Kamran and Jack decided to pose as door-to-door salesmen and sneak into Phil's apartment. The break-in broke a few things and turned up a few clues, including some pretty heated union pamphlets. Phil returned home in time to catch them doing this, which lead to a Three Stooges chase through the streets of Baltimore. Phil nearly shot one of our guys and was only persuaded to give up when Jean charged him with a rapier.

Kamran headed back to the hotel and tried to befriend the man who'd just tried to kill him.

When they returned with their man in tow, it was decided to follow up on the Pinkerton lead. Kang, Jean, and Jack drove to the Pinkerton's offices and waited for the detective to close up shop before burglarizing the place.

As with the previous BNE attempt, this one also quickly went wrong. Kang broke the lock with his lockpicks. Breaking out a crowbar, he proceeded to damaged his right arm more than he'd hurt the door. While he hopped around in the street, cursing, Jack had to bash his way into the office.

Our three heroes promptly ransacked the place, stealing $40,000 in Empire State bearer bonds, a .38 revolver, and $150 in petty cash. To cover their tracks, Kang made a molotov cocktail and then burnt the place down. As a cherry on top, we framed the Phil's union buddies by dropping a few of the fliers outside the blazing building.

Back at the factory, Grunn and Rupert had gotten into a dustup with some mooks who tried to break into the factory. They stuffed Cummings into a locker for safekeeping and ended up in a lopsided firefight. With a pistol and a blowpipe, they managed to chase off several guys with automatic weapons. One mook bought the farm and got wrapped in a tarp, (the steelworks didn't have any sails...) and dumped in a steel drum. Another got wounded, and stuffed in another drum, which Grunn helpfully made some airholes for.

Rupert ate a bullet in the gut and learned that the Dunrite bulletproof vest really is done right.

From there, we hooked up with the Mid-Atlantic Service and got ready to hit the farmhouse. But before we could do that, a heated debate ensued about what to do with Phil. I'll let you someone else tell that story. To give you the highlights, Kamran and Kang exchanged some rather stiff words, Phil got chained to a radiator, Kang gave Phil a present, and Kamran learned a broom closet and a bucket of water aren't great for bomb disposal.

Then we drove off, shot two guys, blew up two more, and Kang nearly blew up Rupert (which he'd insist was partly Rupert's fault, although we'll see how Rupert feels).

It's 10:15 at the base; those lucky enough to eat in the canteen have finished clearing up breakfast for the day as those who aren't lucky enough look on with contempt.

BANG “Sweet Jesus!”

Work is just about to begin proper for the day. The Presidential escort is just about ready to begin it's multi day journey, and Michael has finished getting the rest of his compatriots requests for supplies. It's rare for the expatriates to get a taste of home and they've loaded their comrade with reams of lists. He should have plenty of time to go shopping in between overseeing the mineclearers.

BANG “Gahd, drat!”

Coffee is being drank, supplies are being tallied, and Rupert is shooting a shotgun.

BANG “GraAGh-ugh.”

For the third time he's been sent flying a good few feet backwards by the kick of the Winchester. All of his skills at the martial arts don't seem to be doing him any good when the butt keeps ramming him on the chin, or the chest... or the stomach.

“Stupid bloody thing. I've killed people with spoons drat it! A shotgun is just a bigger spoon!”

Grimly, he picks Wicked Wendy back up, itching to try again despite his frustration. Ask him a few days ago and he would have said a gun was a last resort. And even then, someone using anything above a pistol obviously hadn't trained their punches enough. But when a man grabs a shotgun out of another mans hands, and that man gets shredded to bits by a grenade while the first man walks away scott free, that's a sign right there.

“Do not fear the man who has fired a thousand shotguns once. Fear the man who fired one shotgun a thousand times.”

He psyches himself up for another shot, but drops the gun in a huff.

“Come on now Rupey! It's just a bullet wound. Yes, you've never been shot before, and yes you're a bit older, but it doesn't mean you're losing it. It doesn't mean your losing your edge, or becoming weaker or about to go bald!”

Each lame encouragement is said all the more frantically, before he finally stops and slaps himself. Much of his morning has been wasted trying to learn to shoot the miraculous weapon, but it looks like the gut shot did more then he realised. Well, there was only one thing that was going to fix that! Grim but determined, Rupert stalks off, looking for some heavy things in one place that need to be moved to another place.

I think I'm going to save the 5 CP for now, but for the remaining month, Rupert is going to start training up his strength, so he can actually wield Wicked Wendy the Winchester without being knocked flat on his rear end.

Staring at the hallucinogenic darts Grunn wonders how it would feel.

"No guts no glory" He says as he stabs himself with one of the darts.

Whatever happens he would come out differently.

Maybe you're weighing the moral pros and cons but let me assure you that OH MY GOD
SHOOT ME IN THE GODDAMNED FACE
WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!

Correspondence course would be regular training, so 100 hours per point. Looks like the timeline places us around July 18th, so you'll have 18 days until the next set of missions comes up. If you spend 8 hours a day training daily, that'll give you 1 point and 44 hours toward the second point.

Oh, that's right. How much would it be if I got someone on the base trained in Search already to teach Kamran instead of a correspondence course?

Same time unless they're an instructor, meaning they have the Teaching skill at 12 or higher and have a higher level in the skill being taught than Kamran. If you can find a professional instructor and engage in intensive training up to 16 hours per day, every hour of teaching is 2 hours toward the skill, effectively half time.

Mission Success!

The staff cars and half-track return from Baltimore a few days after the special op squad does. The presidential escort ended up being a complete success, with the half-track and its big .50 leading the way and the staff cars boxing in the president's limo. Nobody ended up making a move against all that firepower.

Mission Success!

Two weeks later the crew is back from France. The old French soldier loved returning to his home country for a little bit and helped smooth interactions with the farmers who owned the fields and the demo men used their experience with explosives to carefully dig up and disarm the mines. They actually brought a few back if you want to reuse or study them!

Mission Success!

The DMZ crew came back almost immediately after the French group, but they came back hurting...and one man short. A Mexican sniper killed one of the boat drivers, leading to a nasty firefight that partially crossed the border. The rest of the group came back with minor injuries and his rifle was recovered, but his body had to be left behind in Texas. Payment is still in full, since the letter of the contract was fulfilled.

Total Income: $590,000
Loot: x5 S-Mines
Casualties: Boat Driver 2

Jean sends away for a correspondence course to get a detective's license, and starts training on how to search areas. He also starts heavy PT training.

Sadly the stress has made him start to chain-smoke.
