How far is it fluttering, like a little wobble or is it going through wild gyrations? The urgency with which you should get it checked out is directly proportional with how far it's moving.

When's the last time you checked or changed the oil? If you've got a low oil level and/or sludge plugging up the filter, it could be collecting somewhere or gumming up the oil pump and then getting pumped through when the pressure builds up enough.

I've seen speculation on ceramic engines that don't require cooling and can get up to 5,000 degrees, as a way to increase fuel economy. Durability and lubrication seem to be hurdles yet to overcome.
