There is no escape.
The captain seems not the least bit intimidated by Floriana, keeping their gazes firmly locked. "Whatever gives you peace of mind," she finally says, collecting the group's shares, "You're free to go where you like on the ship, save for the cargo hold or my quarters, long as you don't get in the way of the crew doing work. Food's on the topdeck for half an hour at dawn, noon and dusk. We're making to leave within the hour, once everything's settled with the harbormaster." She finally cracks a smile, though it's a little patronizing, especially when coupled with the exaggerated bow. "Welcome to the Marid's Breath, ladies - and gentlebear." Preceding you up the gangplank, she tosses the coin to a nearby crewmate - a skinny-looking lad that on closer inspection boasts rope-like muscles on his limbs, and jogs swiftly below deck - and looks around the deck for a moment. "Oi! Far-eye!"

A halfling comes scampering down the ropes, jumping off the last five feet or so with acrobatic grace. Facing you, he cracks a smile, but when he looks at the captain, one of his bright blue eyes doesn't move from you. "Clear skies ahead to the horizon, cap'n. Should be smooth sailing. New crew?"

"Passengers to Neverwinter. Show them their bunks." Shaelinn walks off, not expecting any answer, and the halfling turns to face you with both eyes again.

"Passengers, eh? Ain't that something." Far-eye sucks in air with a pensive expression, dallying for a moment. "Alright, then. Come along." He gestures for you to follow, turns on his heels, and heads below decks with only a last-second warning of "mind your head," just in time for Slim to duck under the unexpectedly low entrance. You descend a pair of stairs, then walk all the way to the other end of the ship, past a few cannons, to find the communal sleeping room. You see one sailor taking a nap in a hammock, though the rest of the room is free, save for a pile of cloth and a bunch of lockboxes near the wall. Far-eye shows you how to hang a hammock, grabbing one from the rolled-up pile near the end of the room, and how to stow it away when you wake up. "Since you're no crew, I guess you can sleep whenever you like, just make sure you don't take up too much space. Others need to sleep too. You can put your stuff in the footlockers if it needs stowing, I'll get you a key if that's the case. Any questions?"

There is no escape.
Having no real questions regarding your accommodations aboard the ship, Far-eye heads back upstairs with a grin to get back to his work. Whether you stay below or head back up to the deck to enjoy the sight, eventually you hear some shouting to and fro, as the crew of the Marid's Breath makes preparations to sail away. Captain Shaelinn is standing on the quarterdeck, shouting orders to the various sailors in the rigging and towards the helmsman. The ship sways ominously in the harbor as it turns around and makes for open sea, but catches its balance eventually. Once you get a solid half-mile from the shore, the sails unfurl with a clattering of cloth and rope, the wind catches, and the ship really makes speed. Some sea gulls coast along, but eventually fall behind.

For most of you, it's an astounding sight. While you can see Waterdeep (and the rest of the shore) disappearing behind you on one side of the ship, the other side has water as far as the eye can see. Sunlight refracts off the gentle waves in a myriad of shimmering lights, the wind blows about your hair and brings with it not the stink of the fish market that most of you might have associated with the sea, but a fresh salt that's almost bracing. For a brief moment, even for the most cynical of you, it doesn't seem so bad, being on a ship. But cynicism has its way of taking hold and dash hopes sooner rather than later, so the grumpiness probably returns sooner than later.

At dusk, a bell begins to ring, and the ship's cook, aided by a few more sailors, brings up a huge cauldron. It seems that the Marid's Breath holds to a higher standard than hardtack and stale beer. You are passed along wooden bowls, which are filled with some sort of stew with heavily spiced meat. Beer and wine are passed around as well, though it's not as good as what you had in your patrons' company. Amidst the crew, you spy mostly humans, some half-elves, a dwarf and, surprisingly, a hobgoblin, who stands somewhat aside from the main crew, though he makes conversation with Far-eye with no particular animosity, nor do any of the others seem to be wary about the goblinoid in their midst. Once Slim joins the crowd, the hobgoblin gives him a glance, though he doesn't seem to be bothered by it.

The sailors make no real attempt at conversation if you don't initiate it, probably having gotten the impression from the captain that you lot don't take too kindly to questions, but they're polite enough if you talk to them, if at a respectful, professional distance. Night passes without much of a problem, though sleeping in the swaying hammocks, with no real privacy (and probably some snoring from some of the crew, or Slim), is perhaps a bit hard for some of you at first. All the same, when dawn approaches, food is served again - though this time only bread, and fruit, with water to drink.

The day passes with no real excitement. The captain seems to be pleased with the progress the ship is making, and from the way the wind is blowing, you are making good progress. But after the dinner shift, when darkness has set over the waters, and some of you are making an attempt at sleeping again, a piercing whistle glides across the boat. Whomever of you might still be on deck are looking at the crew; one of them goes and retrieves the captain, as you hear cries of "Shipwreck! Shipwreck off the port bow!" Captain Shaelinn comes above deck, slightly frustrated, but when she joins the crew looking off the side, taking out her spyglass, that frustration disappears and she immediately starts shouting orders. "Survivors! Raise the sails! Halt the loving ship!" A frantic energy takes the crew, and swift action from the helmsman turns the ship in the direction of the wreck. Looking off the port side, you see a faint light in the distance, upon what you assume to be some rocks or the like. The moonlight somewhat helps, and when your eyes adjust, you do see a wrecked ship, smaller than the Marid's Breath, jutting half out the water, the masts broken off, amidst a dangerous-looking rock formation.

When the ship finally comes to a halt, the anchor is lowered, and the crew makes preparations to lower a skiff. What do you do in the meanwhile?

Yren encourages her fellow thieves to spend the journey above decks. There's more to see up there, there's the wind blowing pleasantly through one's fur or hair, and there's less chance of getting seasick in the open air besides. Yren is happy to let the sailors do the sailing. She alternates every once in a while between plucking her lyre and staring out at the ocean over the gunwale. At one point, while gazing out upon the blue vastness, she gives a shout and beckons Layla over to join her.

"A feast for thine eyne," she offers, gesturing to a spot in the water just beside the ship. "Dolphins. More spirited beasts you'll not see, in the ocean or out of't. Given to curious trifles, but guilesome, and quicker than a rip current." She lets out a contented sigh. "How I loved to watch them swim." She falls silent, then, keeping private her bittersweet reminiscence.

----

At night, Yren is soundly asleep until the Marid's Breath lays anchor. Roused by the stoppage, she hops down lightly from her hammock and makes her way topdeck. As the crew bustles about, she hangs back for a bit, appraising the situation. Once she divines their plan, she glides up beside Captain Shaelinn. "Mayhap a water-breather could be of help," she says softly. She cocks her head to meet the taller woman's gaze sidelong, her expression neutral.

Layla steps forward as the Marid's Breath drops anchor and volunteers herself, "I'll go o'er on one a ya other boats dere." She looks down at Nightblade before continuing, "I knows how ta handle myself if they trouble." Layla looks at the rest of her crew, "Y'all should come too, jus in case somethin do go down."

Character Sheet

Despite his initial grumblings, Slim actually relaxes once the ship leaves harbor. Rather than peer over the railing, however, he realizes there's no way for anyone to find him here, or sneak up in the middle of the night, and he's pretty sure he could take most of the crew in a fight. They've got a hobgoblin they ain't murdered yet, they're probably alright. He put his valuables, and his black robes, in a footlocker, and goes to the deck. Down to just his shorts and sandals, he finds a sunny spot against a mast and naps. Rather loudly.

---

His dreams interrupted by the yelling, Slim wanders over to see what the commotion is about. After a moment he elbows Yren.

"Ya should go see if there's a pretty boy you can rescue and we can ransom."

He looks around at the rest of the ship's crew. "Or... get rewarded for saving. Or somethin'."

Donata was not having a good time, the cramped conditions were dragging on her nerves but outwardly she was keeping her cool, even if she preferred to eat her food alone, and add a few goodberries to whatever the rations were.

Walking up onto the top deck, Donata took a long look at the wreckage. "If they're foolish enough to get wrecked in these waters do we want them aboard?" She asked, gesturing for the spyglass "The wind has been fair, these waters known."

There is no escape.
The captain shakes her head. "It's not about what they did. It's a sailor's sacred duty to help those who cannot help themselves on the open sea." She prepares to board the skiff, alongside Far-eye and two others, who've taken some water and blankets in the smaller vessel with them. "Which is why you lot are staying here. For one, you're paying me a lot of gold to get you safely to Neverwinter, so I'm not going to let you get yourself killed diving a wreck. Second, if something beyond weather sunk that ship, I don't want to be the victim of another attack while I'm out helping them. You guys look like you're used to dealing with rough customers, so protect the ship. If it comes to that." Shaelinn's tone is about as final as it gets, and the skiff is lowered without accepting further argument.

Looking through the spyglass, Donata sees one figure, having made a small, wispy fire from some broken off wood on the rocks. Their form is small and hunched, but they are waving frantically for help. When the skiff makes its way over, the figure is welcomed aboard the boat, covered in a blanket, and given some water. Two of the crew take a lantern into the wrecked hull of the ship... but they emerge a few minutes later, without any additional survivors. The two others peer around the rocks with their own lantern, but seemingly can't find anybody else either. The skiff returns in less than an hour, though the ship itself goes unassaulted in the quiet of the night.

Once the skiff is raised again, the captain and Far-eye get on board the ship first - the halfling quickly scurrying below decks to get the medic - and the two other sailors help the blanket-covered survivor aboard. Turning to you, the captain sighs. "It was no storm that sunk that ship. Anything amiss?"

From below the blanket, the old woman peeks out her head. Her face and hair are wet, and she looks downright miserable. "Oh, yes, quite..." She throws off the blanket, and her visage transforms into an even more gruesome appearance; her nose lengthens, her skin turns a sickly blue green, and her hands turn to long, gnarly claws!

"Now you, too, will find a watery grave! Attack, my pretties!" The hag unleashes a loud cackle, which is answered by the screech of birds. From the dark sky above, a clamor of harpies descends upon the crew, lashing out with their claws. From the other side of the boat, two large, monstrous creatures climb aboard, looking like a cross between a fish, a man and a lizard, wielding wicked-looking harpoons.

The Hag dispels her illusory appearance and shows her true form! Everybody within 30ft must make a DC11 Wis saving throw or be frightened! Val spends a luck point and rerolls the save. Donata and Yren are frightened! At the end of their turn, they may repeat their saving throw (with disadvantage if the hag is within their line of sight).

Being frightened, you have disadvantage on ability checks and attack rolls vs the Hag while she is within line of sight, and you can't willingly move closer to her.

The Hag lashes out at captain Shaelinn and CRITS for 17 damage.
The Sahuagin attack the nearest sailors. One hits for 3 and the other for 9 damage.
The Harpies attack captain Shaelinn and some sailors! Two sailors are hit for 4 and 6 damage respectively.

Captain Shaelinn attacks the Hag! She hits twice and misses once for a total of 12 damage.

The sailors attack! Harpy 2 and Sahuagin 1 take 3 and 6 damage respectively; the other attacks miss.

Val, like Donata, was not exactly having much of a good time, either. Yes, she agreed to travel by boat, but the one thing the ex-soldier failed to mention was that this was actually her first time on a boat. She thought she could handle it, but she was wrong. Most of her time on the boat was spent battling her own queasiness, and while the rest of her comrades were marveling at the wonders of the open sea, Val had been desperately trying to not puke her guts out.

The appearance of the hag didn't help matter, and, for a brief moment, the normally confident Valeria is struck with fear, the horrifying visage of the hag causing a shiver to run down her spine. But it was only for a moment. Valeria is a woman who store death in the face, and lived, and she wasn't going to let some ugly, old hag get the best of her! Taking out her battleaxe, she yells out, in a commanding voice, "The captain and I will take down the hag! The rest of you, focus on taking down the other creatures!"

She charges in, like a fierce lion, showing absolutely no fear, or signs that she was suffering from seasickness just a few minutes ago. It's almost as if she has become a different person from how she was before. Bringing her axe up, she roars out, "The only one who will be finding their grave today..." And swings her axe down on her! "Is you!" Not giving the hag even a single moment to breath, the woman swings again, leaving a bigger gash on her foe this time! "I, Valeria Garland, of the Iron Lions, shall make sure of that!"

Move: Val is going to move around the harpy to get to G5.
Action: Attacking the hag, and then using an Action Surge to attack again, and spending a Superiority Dice to use Goading Strike. I hit with both attacks, and did 25 damage total, and the hag has to make a Wis 14 save throw. On a failed save, she has disadvantage on all targets that aren't me until the end of my next turn.

A shiver ran down Donata's spine as the monsters came aboard, "We should have left them alone..." she said but her gruff tones were significantly higher pitched. The Half-Orc was having trouble looking at the Hag let alone fighting it, so when Valeria declared her intent to handle the Hag herself, Donata was happy to take the instruction and go for one of the other creatures. A brief whisper as she moved and her staff seemed to glow faintly green, allowing the Anarchist to swing with much more ferocity then she normally would have, much to the Harpies' displeasure, letting the rage of battle cool her frayed nerves.

There is no escape.
Though the Hag falls swiftly under the combined assault, a wet gurgle escaping her throat as her final breath departs, her forces wreak havoc on the boat. Two sailors fall under the assault of the blood-hungry fishmen, who eviscerate the poor men with their harpoons. The harpies have less luck, only scratching here and there. Shaelinn grunts. "A fine show, but we're not out of the woods. Get the--" Her words falter as a song drifts across the deck. From above, you see a Harpy perched halfway up the foremast, the sounds emanating from it a sharp contrast to the harsh screeches from the others. The captain's eyes glaze over, her sword falls to her side, and she stumbles off towards the main deck.

Val and Yren feel their adrenaline fading. Where fear had gripped them earlier, even for just a moment, now everything is peaceful. The din of battle fades around them. The song makes them dream; of a rich life, with nothing they could want, servants ready at their beck and call, to serve their every whim. Wouldn't that be nice?

Harpy 2 fails her save and takes 1 damage from Vicious Mockery.

The sahuagin attack the nearest sailors. Both sailors die after taking 5 and 8 damage respectively.

Harpy 1 attacks Shaelinn! She hits once for 2 damage.
Harpy 2 attacks Donata! She misses both times.
Harpy 3 attacks the sailor next to her! She hits once for 3 damage.
Harpy 4 flies up to the mast and sings a Luring Song! Every humanoid within 300ft makes a DC 11 Wisdom Save or is charmed! Valeria, Yren, Shaelinn and both Sahuagin are charmed!

While charmed, you are incapacitated. If the charmed target starts its turn more than 5 feet away from the harpy must move towards the harpy, taking the most direct route, not avoiding opportunity attacks. However, if it would move into damaging terrain, it gets another save. A charmed target can also save at the end of each of their turns. Being incapacitated, you can't take actions or reactions except for the specified move action.

On her turn, Shaelinn moves to O6. Harpy 1 takes an Opportunity Attack, but misses.

The sailors attack! Harpy 1 and 2 take 2 and 3 damage respectively.

There is no escape.
Though the crew pushes through the harpy's charm sooner rather than later, the monstrous sahuagin is not so lucky, gurgling some sort of tone-deaf accompaniment to the song as he runs towards the mast. The harpies, however, are tasting blood, and two of the other sailors fall to their nasty claws! Enraged, captain Shaelinn bursts from her trance and carves up the harpy surrounded by her men. "Kill these wretches!" she cries out, pointing her blade at the remaining enemies.

The remaining sailor, however, realizing he is out of his league, scampers below deck and lets the seasoned fighters deal with the monsters.

Floriana attacks Harpy 1 with her rapier for 19 damage. Harpy 1 dies! She moves to O8.
Layla moves to N5 and uses Eldritch Blast against Harpy 2, hitting for 8 damage.

Harpy 2 takes an OA against Yren, but misses.

Sahuagin 2 runs towards Harpy 4 and fails its save.

Harpy 2 attacks the sailor next to her! She hits twice for a total of 7 damage, killing him!
Harpy 3 flies to W3 and attacks the sailor next to her! She hits once for 4 damage.
Harpy 4 stops singing. Sahuagin 2 is no longer charmed. Harpy 4 moves to W5 and attacks the sailor, killing him!

Shaelinn moves to Q5 and attacks Harpy 2 for 13 damage, killing it!

The remaining sailor runs below deck.

A wave of panic washes over Yren. She's never one to turn down a bit of flirting, but that's on her terms. It's a game where she gets to show only what she wants people to see. Conversely, this brief yet revealing look into her fantasy life is far more than she's comfortable showing her comrades. She has to save face. For once caught out of her social element, she finds herself racking her brain for rejoinder - though only for the briefest of moments, in fear of letting an awkward pause form. "When land we make, Val, I'll fain to share a drink with thee," is what she ends up saying. On further reflection it would have probably been better to defuse rather than escalate the situation, but what's said is said. For the time being, anyway, she has more pressing matters to worry about. She tries to push the whole thing out of her mind. Taking small solace in the fact that Val is standing behind her and can't see her brightly flushed cheeks, she approaches the remaining harpies with a rumbling incantation on her lips. As she steps in close, a thunderous burst of force erupts from her, threatening to overwhelm her feathered foes.

Bonus Action: Val gains one Bardic Inspiration die (d6). Once within the next 10 minutes, she can add the die to an ability check, attack roll, or saving throw. She can wait until after the roll to decide to use it, but must decide before learning of success/failure.
Move to V4.
Thunderwave! Harpies 3 and 4 must make DC15 Con saving throws. On a failed save, a creature takes 2d8 thunder damage and is pushed 10 feet away from me. On a successful save, the creature takes half as much damage and isn’t pushed. In addition, unsecured objects that are completely within the area of effect are automatically pushed 10 feet away from you by the spell’s effect, and the spell emits a thunderous boom audible out to 300 feet.

It slowly starts to dawn on Val on what just happened. Did she just... ask Yren out for drinks? In the middle of a battle? And she accepted it!? "I'll, uh, be looking forward to it," she says to Yren, her cheeks completely reddened by the whole situation. Now that her mind is back in reality, Valeria focuses her attention on the battle at hand, and away from the awkward flirting. Moving closer now, she takes out one of her hand-axes, and tosses it right at the fishmonster that Slim is currently engaged with. The axe spins a few times in the air, and THUNK! The axe embeds itself on the back of the creature's head, ending it's life for good.

Move: Moving to T6.
Action: Attacking Sahuagin 2. Rolled a 13 to hit, and 8 to damage.

The thunderous boom echoes across the waves from Yren's spell, and Floriana and Layla take advantage of a harpy's temporary disorientation to send a combined attack into the monster. Now realizing they are sorely outmatched, the two harpies start flying away, one of them frantically flying away while the other takes to the skies. Not content with letting them escape, Shaelinn runs up past Slim, chucking two daggers straight into the wings of the harpy, which spirals down into the ocean below.

Both harpies fail their save, taking 9 damage from Thunderwave and being pushed to W1 and W7 respectively.

Floriana moves to T5 attacks Harpy 4 with her rapier for 9 damage. Harpy 1 dies!
Layla moves to T4 and uses Eldritch Blast against Harpy 4, hitting for 5 damage.

Harpy 3 moves and dashes to get out of dodge.
Harpy 4 does the same, flying to 30 ft above AA11.

Shaelinn moves to W9 and attacks Harpy 2 for 12 damage, killing it!

Combat is over!

Catching her breath and surveying the carnage on her ship, the captain walks up to the foredeck and rings a bell in a quick three-ring pattern. Soon enough, the sailors that had stayed below move up and gather on deck. "These monsters sought to take advantage of our good will, and paid for it with their lives. Unfortunately, we've lost Gann, Selim, Ral and Colm to their viciousness; but thanks to them and our passengers, the Marid's Breath still sails. Start preparing for their funerals. Get the rest of the mess cleaned up. Hilgo, Sten, you're moving from Gornak's shift to Far-Eye's, so get to work too. We've got a while to go afore we get to Neverwinter, so we'll have to work harder to get there in time; but that's the way it is. And somebody throw a rope overboard to get that bear back up!"

Waiting for Donata to clamber back aboard, she gathers the lot of you, giving each a grave look before speaking. "Thank you, for fighting alongside us in this. Not how I wanted the journey to go, but I guess Tymora willed differently. Y'all get yourself below decks, you earned the rest. We'll take care of the rest."

As soon as everything calms down and the sailors come back up, Slim finds a moment to corner Shaelinn.

"So... are those fish things edible? Do they need to be smoked or something?" He looks down at his feet where he had kicked them. "...and do you know a trick to getting scaley bits out of fur?"

Despite trying to ignore them and concentrate on napping in the sun, the awkwardness between Val and Yren started to bug Slim by the next morning. Having spent most of his formative years amongst his family or in jail, and not being particularly friendly with a lot of women before joining this crew, he was at a loss. But he was moved to do... something.

At first Slim found Donata, he held up a finger and started to voice his concerns... before remember she's been living in the woods. Alone. For years. He closed his mouth without finishing the first word, turned and and walked off, seeking out Layla instead.

"So... Val and Yren. I'm not good with the feelings-y stuff. We're all friends now, right? Are we supposed to be doing somethin'? Get 'em drunk? Throw 'em overboard? This isn't a knife fight, thing, issit?"

Floriana occupies her free time by finding innocuous corners in which to spy on Yren and Val. The sailors, Shaelinn especially, weren't the most stimulating of people-watching. She would have found Val's awkwardness almost humorous, if it weren't also a little pathetic. Floriana takes advantage of a quiet moment to offer some advice before their arrival in Neverwinter.

" 'Ey, ah...y'know...we all do kinda ballsy stuff when we ain't thinkin' straight. But y'know...hiding ain't gonna help. It'll just get weirder if you act like nothin' happened, and put off dealin' wit' it." There is no escape.
The ship's funerals, if you attend them, are sober, simple affairs; one of the sailors says a few words to usher the fallen comrades to the embrace of Kelemvor, and the bodies - wrapped in white cloth - are dumped overboard. After all four dead are thus sent off, everybody raises a glass to each of them in turn. All in all, it doesn't take more than an hour before they get back to work. Fortunately, the rest of the journey is much less violent, and you make it to Neverwinter in another two days. You arrive at the crack of dawn, and the bell rings on the topdeck to wake everyone.

Shaelinn is there to see you off, and follows you down the gangplank to the dock. "Welcome to Neverwinter. I'd wish you luck, but I'm pretty sure you don't need it." She goes off to deal with the harbormaster, leaving you to your devices. You are in your target city. Time to get to work.

Welcome to the planning phase of the second heist! Like before, you have a target, but you need to figure out some information before you plan your heist. Currently available is the following information:

Location Helm's Temple in the River District holds catacombs underground which are the home to anywhere up to a dozen vaults. The box to be retrieved is in one of these vaults, but you know not which.

Security measures Clerics on staff are inside the temple. Being located in the middle of the city, any ruckus is likely to attract the attention of the city guard. Each of the vaults is likely to be magically protected.

Miscellaneous Val and Floriana know that the unsavory element in Neverwinter, a detachment of the Shadow Thieves, hangs out in a tavern called the Salacious Serpent. They're also not particularly pleasant to outsiders on their turf.

Neverwinter was a place where Floriana had never dreamed of scoring - even after her heist at Baldur's Gate. Fortunately, visitors to Westgate pass on useful information that, sometimes, is more valuable than money.

Scene: Val & Yren Go for Drinks

Yren awakes the next morning wrapped around Val. Letting out a contented sigh, she nuzzles up against her, languishing there until the sun demands them to rise. When Val wakes up, Yren gives her a little kiss on the cheek. "Last night was amazing," she croons. Eventually, however, they must get up. Though Yren rolls out of bed with the greatest reluctance, once she's actually on her feet, she's as light as a feather. She flies through her morning routine, humming to herself, and heads downstairs to meet the others. More or less on time. Relaxing in her seat as she waits for her breakfast to arrive, she manages to keep herself from grinning from ear to ear, but there's no hiding her radiant mood. Nor does she particularly care to. Avoiding coming across as a grinning maniac is one thing, but professionalism could make no demand great enough to hide the fullness of her heart right now.

Soon enough, the waitress comes around with Yren's meal - and as soon as she disappears again, Floriana launches into her plan. Yren listens intently. "We've rivals here?" She asks, not particularly surprised. After all, she's operated out of Athkatla, where one can hardly set eyes on a stranger's purse without paying tribute to the Shadow Thieves. Floriana certainly seems confident enough she can deal with them, though. Yren shrugs. "Thy assurance shall be mine as well. Have you need of us all? If not, I could head to the temple, beseech forgiveness or some such from the priests while another takes the lay of the place."

Last night almost felt like a dream. Even when she wakes up, with Yren wrapped around her arms, she still has a hard time believing any of this was real, but it was. Smiling gently back at her, she says, "It really was," and gives her a peck on the forehead. Just like Yren, she is reluctant to get out of bed, perfectly content with staying like this for a few hours longer, but they have a job to do, and they need to start getting ready for it. After getting dressed up, Val heads down to join with the others, and takes a seat next to Yren. She tries to keep it professional, but there's no hiding how much more cheery she looks now.

"Going along might not be the wisest plan. It might be better to go in groups," speaks up Val, "I know a bit about the local gang, so I'll join you. Might be a good idea to have one more person come with us, just in case." The idea of separating from Yren pains her slightly, but Val knew that she and Floriana might have the best chance of dealing with the Shadow Thieves.

Slim manages to keep his mouth shut for the most part, lazily picking his way through his second plate of breakfast. To anyone paying attention, he's significantly more relaxed since they left Waterdeep. He's glad to not have the spectre of his family hanging over his head and has stopped lurking in every dark corner he can find. Almost as important, he's glad his compatriots have found a moment of real happiness. It's rare in his experience, and should be shared. Still, he can't resist needling at the new couple a little bit.

"Ya don't look like ya got many regrets to confess this mornin', Yren. Still, if ya could distract 'em, Donata 'n me can poke around. Unless you'd rather go swimming again, Big D?"

Team Politics

After breakfast, Floriana leads Val and Layla over to the Salacious Serpent. 'tis a small tavern, but the inside is cozy, if you ignore the various suspicious glances. It's not particularly busy, given the early hour, but what patrons are present turn back to their tables and conversations after the requisite inspection of the new arrivals The barkeep is an older woman, with a crooked nose and a tight bun of grey hair. She doesn't look particularly pleased to see the lot of you, ignoring you for a long moment before she finally deigns her time worthy and ambles over to your side of the bar, awaiting your order with a raised eyebrow.

Team Reconnaissance

Donata knows enough of the Helmites. They are dedicated, above all, to the defense of those in need. Paladins of the church roam the land in search of evil to suppress, and clerics that stay in the temple provide blessings for those in need of strength or conviction. As servants of the Watcher, they are stalwart, courageous, and cautious at best, and zealous, relentless and paranoid at worst. While they will observe the local law in their pursuits, they have little in the way of compassion or pity when it comes to their enemies. Still, they are known to work with other faiths, mostly in the area of protection, though the only true ally of Helm is said to be Torm.

Helm himself is, similar to his worshippers, a sentry and guardian. He watches events across the cosmos with a critical eye, observes and plans, and can never be caught off guard. Once upon a time, his faith was minor at best, even persecuted in places, but the Vigilant endured, as did his faith. Most places will have at least a small temple to Helm now, but his faith is most popular in Cormyr.

--

Once the various disguises are applied, Yren, Donata and Slim go in search of the temple. They ask around a little, and eventually stumble upon a dragonborn. His bronze scales are dusty and chafed, his armor is dented and has long since lost its luster; but he seems good-natured, and surprised at your question. "You are in search of the temple of Helm? Why, you need only follow me! I am Adept Madrash, the Eager, and I serve the Watcher! I have returned from a long journey, and will be seeking the blessing of Alert Lutgehr afore I go traveling again. May I ask your purpose at the temple? Have you come to dedicate yourself to the faith of the Vigilant One?"
