Unfortunately the red flags were there. Maybe not to the extent that I'd have expected him to literally be writing for a neo-nazi publication but I can't say I haven't been overlooking some questionable bits in his monologues on the show.

Dude's a super-boomer so I was able to excuse some old-man-yells-at-cloud stuff, even if it was pretty drat questionable. This falls pretty squarely into "officially cancelled" territory, though.

Any recommendations for less poo poo horror hosts to watch from now on?

Because wrestling's fun

My horror friends dropped off him last month when wrote an article about how there were too many queer identities these days and back in my day queer was a slur, etc.

Can we retroactively replace his comeback with Joe R. Lansdale hosting a horror movie marathon?

Sadly, Joe Bob is the only host that I know of that actually talks about the content, production, and history of the movies he hosts. Otherwise, Svengoolie is the only real old-school guy still being broadcast on TV, though YouTube is rife with (bad) horror hosts, and maybe there's some hidden gems that I haven't discovered yet.

Take it as an opportunity to make your own!

e: Off Beat Cinema is not good per se, but they've got the right spirit and it's a bit charming in its badness. Viewership is just way too low to sustain the format for unknown quantities though. Just found this guy on Vimeo who looks like he's trying and might be fun in a public access kinda way. There's also these guys who don't seem obnoxious and this looks pretty cute. These guys appear to have something resembling production values.

Can't personally vouch for any of them but Off Beat, though.

She's insanely shy irl, and vapes a ton of weed for anxiety related issues. The reason she's pretty awesome as the mail girl is mainly due to someone else doing the heavy lifting and having the attention divided.

I was just aware that he hosted some show on TNT called "Monstervision", because I watched TNT a bit when I was a kid and I saw commercials for it all the time. Then I recognized him out-of-character as "John Bloom" on The Daily Show when he did a segment called "God Stuff".

My one and only defense of this horrible shitshow with Taki's is that Briggs/Bloom seems to go where the money is, and keep in mind that his Charlottesville article was written before he got that sweet Shudder deal and made his big comeback. It feels like something he was commissioned to do because the Right loves Joe Bob Briggs (Texan, redneck persona, did a racism once which may/may not have been "in character"). They could've given him talking points and an outline and paid him by the word.

But, you know, after hitting it big with the Shudder deal he could've broken it off with Taki's especially after his fans called him out on it but he continues to write for them and defend himself.

But I mean, at least the South Park guys have kinda come around to saying "well, maybe capitalism really was the problem all along?". Joe Bob is still firmly stuck in the 90's neoliberal-tarian mindset of "people just need to buck up, bootstrap and all become entrepreneurs and quit whining". Like I don't think he's a full-blown Trumpist but I guarantee if he backed a candidate it'd be, I don't know, Andrew Yang or something.

From my experience, the thing with people who were young in 70s and 80s alternative scenes is that they were driven by a pretty shallow definition of acceptance. Of course they didn't mind chilling with black folks or gay folks, but without reflection on privilege or complicity in systems of oppression. It was an ideology of being opened minded that put your mere interaction with the marginalized as some sort of heroic feat that also meant that acceptance for people with some gross beliefs because acceptance in itself is the virtue. And that often meant not recognizing that you've absorbed some of those lovely beliefs.

Yeah, even she was like "Well, maybe an elder millennial or something, I guess..." Kind of a lovely situation for her because she doesn't want to admit she's "older" on the air but she doesn't want to argue the point either.

Joe Bob just has terrible interplay with every single woman on the show and you would think for someone who has been around for as long as he has he'd be less awkward. God dang, constantly bringing up penises with that Sleepaway Camp star is just so corny and uncomfortable every time even though it's a bit. And that episode with the woman from Reanimator was so heavily edited I can only imagine what the raw footage looked like, just a lot of long silences and two word answers I would bet.

This hits the nail on the head perfectly and I think fits a lot of "open minded" people from his generation.

Agree, it's a shame. It feels like he's doing all this finger pointing about "everyone" becoming radicalized and forgetting to look in the mirror. The only clue I noticed when he was in Pittsburgh was something he mentioned about "When I was a kid, the older generation was always telling me what I could say, and now that I'm older, the younger generation is always telling me what I can say."

The only way this relates to movies that I can see would be a perceived decline in exploitation cinema. But I'm sure there's just as much edgy weird poo poo out there as ever, and presumably made without the negative aspects of exploitation like racism/sexism/whatever the gently caress.

I know I've talked about this on the forums before, but man when I went to TromaFest it was harrowing to see how the crowd of Troma fans just completely missed the loving point on exactly that. Having to watch Kaufman try to explain to these stupid loving MAGA metalheads that no he doesn't think that Hollywood should be more racist and homophobic while trying to not directly insult his primary demo was super depressing.

Also had to break a friend's heart about Joe Bob's politics the other day. That was a bummer.

Anti-PC people have zero self-awareness and really, really thin skin. And they have no concept of when broad comedy is actually funny and when it's hurtful. I think broad, offensive and absurd comedy has a place in the world, I think being shocking and pushing boundaries is fine. But there's a fine line these days where it's hard to tell someone's intent, specifically because there are actual white supremacists that use those exact same tactics except they mean every word of it.

And I hate to hear that Troma's fan base has changed, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised. There's a lot of crossover there with South Park and we know that there's a not-insignificant amount of South Park fans who are pretty far to the right, so I suppose it was a matter of time before they moved over to Troma. It's just loving weird because Lloyd Kaufman is a Bernie supporting New York Jew, like do any of these MAGA guys even know who he is outside of the movies he makes?

Yeah, seeing Kaufman's heart breaking on stage was definitely the worst part. But agreed, I think there is absolutely a place for offensive or edgy boundary-pushing stuff, and just like that clip states that place is when you're using it to illustrate a larger point or make your audience uncomfortable to some end. Using it purposefully and with intent is good. Just throwing out the n word because you know it gets a reaction is not.

Horror fans are either the coolest people you'll ever meet or absolute "triggered, snowflake?" garbage, there doesn't seem to be any in-between (see: the subject of this thread.) Sucks to hear TromaFest has a lot of the latter, otherwise it's a convention I might actually be interested in going to.
